Funeral details announced for Donegal grandmother (82) killed in tragic crash
Bernadette Cranley was the driver of a silver Toyota Vitz which was in collision with a blue Suzuki Vitara on the Mellon Road between Omagh and Newtownstewart near the folk park at around 12.30pm. 'The lovely lady' - tears and tributes for woman killed in horror collision
An elderly pedestrian killed when she was hit by a bus on Monday has been described as a 'lovely neighbour' who was 'the salt of the earth.' Named locally as Colette Campbell, in her 80s, she is one of five women who lost their lives in separate road crashes in counties Louth, Meath, Wexford, Clare and Tyrone over the weekend. Ms Campbell has been described by local councillor Bernie Conlon as 'a lovely neighbour with a heart of gold.' Ms Campbell, who lived on Main Street in Dunleer, Co Louth is understood to have just left her home when she was struck by a bus at approximately 12.20pm on Lower Main Street on Monday. Ms Campbell was transferred by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where she was sadly pronounced dead. Her tragic death has left the local community in shock Speaking to Irish Mirror on Monday afternoon, Cllr Conlon said: 'I and the whole community are in shock for the lovely lady, Colette Campbell, who lost her life. 'She was a lovely neighbour who had a heart of gold. I am a neighbour of the McCreanor and Campbell families. It's so sad that at her age she lost her life through tragic circumstances," said Cllr Conlon. 'I am deeply saddened by the loss of Colette which has saddened the whole community. "Everyone knew Colette and she was the salt of the earth," said Cllr Conlon. "I am also so sorry for the emergency services ambulance, the Garda, the paramedics and the fire brigade personnel that came upon such a heartbreaking accident and I feel for the bus driver as well.' The road was closed on Monday afternoon for a technical examination of the scene to be conducted and diversions were in place. Investigating Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. In a statement, An Garda Siochana said: 'Any road users who were at Lower Main Street, Dunleer, between 12:10pm and 12:30pm on Monday, May 26 and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardai.' Ms Campbell's death brings to five the number of women who lost their lives in separate road collisions over the weekend. Mother-of-three and grandmother Theresa Morgan (63), from Ashbourne, Co Meath died when she was struck by a car on the Dublin Road (R135), in Ashbourne on Saturday. Ms Morgan, who was a pedestrian, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another female pedestrian, aged in her 20s, was killed in Wexford on Saturday at around 3pm on the R702 Curragraigue, Enniscorthy. Separately, a female cyclist, understood to be a Canadian tourist on a cycling trip to Ireland, was killed in an incident involving a tractor in Tulla, Co Clare on Saturday. And in Tyrone, Bernadette 'Bernie' Cranley, 82, who was from Lifford in Co. Donegal, died after a two vehicle crash off the A5. Canadian tourist killed in Clare collision among four women who died on the roads over the weekend
A Canadian tourist was among the four women who lost their lives in road collisions across the country over the weekend. The woman, who was in her 70s, had been cycling with a group when she was in a collision with a tractor at Toonagh, Tulla, on Saturday afternoon. She has not yet been named but is understood to have travelled to Ireland as part of a cycling group touring Clare. Cllr Mary Howard, a Fine Gael councillor with Clare County Council, said her death was the first road fatality in Clare this year. 'We send our condolences to her family in Canada and to her colleagues who were with her on their vacation," she said. "It is a horrendous way for a holiday to turn out.' Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene following report of the collision, involving a tractor and a bicycle, which occurred on the L3180 at about 12.45pm on Saturday. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed for an autopsy at University Hospital Limerick. Investigations are also continuing into the death of a woman in her 20s in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford. The woman, who has also not yet been named, died after she was also hit by a car, on the R702 in Curraghgraigue, Enniscorthy, at about 3pm on Saturday. She was removed to Wexford General Hospital, where she later died. The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, received a medical assessment at the scene. Meanwhile, the woman who died after being hit by a car on Saturday evening in Ashbourne, Co Meath, has been named locally. She was Theresa Morgan. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. In Donegal, the community of Lifford is in mourning for 82-year-old Bernie Cranley. Ms Cranley was the driver of a silver Toyota Vitz that was involved in a collision with a blue Suzuki Vitara over the weekend. The incident took place on the Mellon Road between Omagh and Newtownstewart near the Ulster American Folk Park at about 12.30pm on Saturday. PSNI inspector Cherith Adair, from the collision investigation unit, said: 'Our inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the collision, and we would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam footage which could assist us.' There have been 65 fatalities in 62 collisions on Irish roads so far this year. The number has fallen from 63 fatalities in 68 collisions in the same period last year.

Pro-A5 carriageway campaigners urge construction to commence after ‘another family devastated by this road'

The Co Donegal woman's silver Toyota Vitz collided with a blue Suzuki Vitara at around 12.30pm leaving the other female driver, who was in her 70s, seriously injured. The A5 Enough Is Enough group extended condolences to the grieving family of Ms Cranley and pointed to the latest tragedy as a reminder of why the upgrade is needed. 'Another family devastated by this road,' it posted on social media. 'Our thoughts and prayers are also with the lady who was seriously injured in the same accident. 'We are very cognisant of the fact that we are currently waiting on the judge's decision on the latest objection – what more evidence does he need that this objection should be thrown out? How many more people have to die?' Described as one the most dangerous roads on the island, there have been over 50 fatalities on the A5 since 2006. Plans were unveiled by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) in 2007 to upgrade the route which will require the compulsory purchase of land to construct the new road – the scheme has been delayed by opposition, legal challenges and funding issues. Last October Mr O'Dowd confirmed his intention to proceed with plans to improve the main passage between Londonderry and Aughnacloy as part of a cross-border project to better connect Dublin to the north west region. The Alternative A5 Alliance oppose the project on the basis that its members, as landowners overlapping the proposed roadway, stand to lose as a result of it. More than 3,000 acres sprawled over 300 farms will be impacted by the project. The A5 Alliance delayed its approval in both 2013 and 2018 citing that DfI and its precursor group unlawfully failed to impose a time limit for carrying the scheme. The group has submitted a fresh judicial review against its construction claiming Stormont's targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions have been violated. In March the High Court heard how residents forced to sell their homes as part of the scheme had suffered a violation of their human rights. However, speaking at a press conference for the approval of the project back in October, Mr O'Dowd insisted it will provide the west with 'critically important infrastructure.' "Now we have achieved that, it's about moving towards construction and giving the people of the west, and indeed all of us, proper infrastructure where we can go about and do our daily business and benefit the economy,' the Sinn Fein MLA said. "The project will provide for critically important infrastructure, create jobs, benefit the economy and improve journey times. "We do recognise there are serious safety concerns on that road ahead of the upgrade.'
