MLB rumors: What Orioles are telling trade suitors about deadline plans

The post MLB rumors: What Orioles are telling trade suitors about deadline plans appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Baltimore Orioles are in the basement of the American League East as May wraps up. After consecutive playoff appearances, their chances are slim and getting slimmer by the day. That means the Orioles could be sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline, with pending free agent Ryan O'Hearn lurking as a potential target. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal has more on their potential trade deadline plans. Advertisement 'The Baltimore Orioles, while not yet giving up on their season, are informing clubs that if they continue at their present trajectory, they will be sellers at the deadline,' Rosenthal wrote. 'Stating the obvious? Perhaps. At 19-36, the Orioles' playoff odds as of Thursday stood at 1.3 percent.' 'First baseman/outfielder Ryan O'Hearn, a potential free agent whose .977 OPS ranks fourth in the majors, is among Baltimore's intriguing trade candidates. O'Hearn's .327 expected batting average is just 11 points below his actual mark, and his .518 expected slugging percentage is just 32 points below,' Rosenthal wrote. Cedric Mullins is also a pending unrestricted free agent this offseason. The centerfielder is one of the last holdovers from the horrendous Orioles teams and has been key to their recent success. Even this year, he has ten homers and 31 RBIs with a .771 OPS. Despite his great run with Baltimore, it could be time to trade Mullins. The Orioles also have a lot of pitchers who could be available. But their starting pitching has been a massive part of the problem this season. Zach Eflin and Charlie Morton likely won't get much traction because of their poor starts. And the Orioles are unlikely to trade Tomoyuki Sugano, according to Rosenthal, to protect their relationship with Japanese players. The Orioles look to get back on track this weekend with a home series against the Chicago White Sox. If they get swept, they will have the worst record in the American League.

Marcus Stroman's injury might help Yankees swing a critical trade

Marcus Stroman hasn't thrown a pitch since April, but somehow, his trade value is quietly heating up. The Yankees might have stumbled into a rare bit of luck without Stroman even stepping on a mound, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports. With his left knee still barking, Stroman is unlikely to reach the 140-inning mark that would have automatically locked in his $18 million player option for 2026. That looming salary scared teams off over the winter when the Yankees explored potential trade scenarios last winter. Advertisement Teams just didn't want to risk being stuck with that kind of financial commitment if things went sideways. New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Penner-Imagn Images As MLB Trade Rumors reported earlier this week, Stroman's injury could ultimately save the Yankees $18 million. And New York could have a valuable chip to play if he gets back on the mound before the trade deadline and shows even flashes of his early-season form. The risk for interested teams is suddenly lower, and in a pitching market that's already thin, that matters. Right now, Stroman is still dealing with a mysterious knee issue, but if Stroman can make even a handful of starts before the deadline, his value could spike just as the Yankees look to deal for an infielder or another starter. Advertisement The Yankees had tried to move Stroman over the winter but found that the 34-year-old's vesting option for 2026 was a problem. When injuries devastated their rotation in spring training, Stroman became a necessity. Now, they see they can get by without Stroman and his 11.57 ERA. Stroman, who signed the two-year $37-million deal last offseason, made 30 appearances, including 29 starts for the Yankees in 2024. He went 9-10 with a 4.31 ERA, his highest since 2018 with the Toronto Blue Jays. After a decent first half, posting a 3.31 ERA, Stroman blew up in his l

Matthew Tkachuk joins Florida Panthers for full practice

Dec 14, 2024; Calgary, Alberta, CAN; Florida Panthers left wing Matthew Tkachuk (19) controls the puck during the warmup period against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome. (Sergei Belski-Imagn Images) The Florida Panthers took the ice for a full team practice on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale. It was the first day of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and while the first games of the postseason would kick off elsewhere, the Panthers still have a few days to get right for Game 1 against Tampa Bay. Advertisement As Florida continues preparing for what they hope is a repeat run to the Stanley Cup Final, there was a welcomed addition to their practice group that hadn't been seen in that setting for quite a while. For the first time since mid-February, All-Star forward Matthew Tkachuk joined his Panthers teammates for a full team practice. He was wearing a white jersey, signifying a top six forward role, and skated on a line with Sam Bennett and Mackie Samoskevich. Afterwards, Panthers Head Coach Paul Marice said he liked what he saw, in a limited capacity. 'Matthew looked like Matthew,' Maurice said. 'It was a special teams day, so there's not a lot of contact, not a lot of five-man moving, but it was a good day for where we're at.' Advertisement Saturday was a step in the right direction. It keeps Tkachuk on track to join the Panthers for a game sometime this week. Now he'll need to rest and recover from this skate, come back on Sunday and, hopefully, continue on the recovery path that's been laid out. 'He looked fine, but it wasn't a heavy enough day, or from a duration point of view, long enough to make a game assessment on him,' Maurice said. 'We'll see how it comes back in tomorrow and put the whole group back on the ice on Monday.' Other Florida forward lines during Saturday's practice included the traditional top line of Sasha Barkov centering Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe, while newcomer Brad Marchand continued on the Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen line that he looked quite good with toward the end of the regular season. Advertisement Jesper Boqvist and Evan Rodrigues flanked Nico Sturm on what appeared to be the fourth line, and Tomas Nosek centered A.J. Greer and Jonah Gadjovich on the fifth line. In terms of that special teams work Maurice mentioned, Tkachuk did skate on Florida's top power play unit along with Barkov, Reinhart, Samoskevich and Seth Jones. The second unit included Bennett, Marchand, Verhaeghe, Rodrigues and Schmidt. The impact of having a forward group that includes Tkachuk, Bennett and Marchand is something that has been widely discussed since the Trade Deadline. Whenever Tkachuk makes his debut, assuming there are no injuries before that, it'll be the first time all three are playing together. Advertisement Whether or not they ever end up on the same line, it's still got to be incredibly intimidating for opposing players to think about. Tkachuk and Bennett already perfectly personified the style of hockey Florida wants to play, and adding Marchand to the mix should be like adding gasoline to a fire. 'I think we have a fairly defined style of game,' said Maurice. 'The players that we bring in, part of the reason we bring them in is that we believe they can play that style of game.' NHL Insider Doubts Islanders Will Ink Brock Nelson In Front Of Trade Deadline

With less than two days separating the New York Islanders from the NHL Trade Deadline, TSN's Pierre LeBrun casted doubt on whether the team will re-sign Brock Nelson. Image He shared his latest on TSN's Insider Trading on Wednesday. 'This has been a fascinating process over the last 48 hours,' LeBrun said. 'What I'm being told is it's still uncertainty exactly where Lou Lamoriello will go here.' He later said that Nelson signing a long-term deal is 'out the window.' Advertisement LeBrun later said that teams like the Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Winnipeg Jets and New Jersey Devils as targets. He adds that the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers could be sleeper teams to swing a deal. However, he also notes a lot could change in the next day and change before the deadline. Following the Islanders' win over the Jets last night, New York sat three points out of a playoff spot, so the possibility that Nelson remains on Long Island is a possibility.
