‘Cannonball' train returns to LIRR for limited seasonal service

NEW YORK (PIX11) — The Cannonball is rolling back into New York just in time for Memorial Day weekend. The seasonal train dubbed the Cannonball, returned to service on the Long Island Rail Road on Thursday afternoon, marking the start of the transit agency's summer schedule. More Local News The limited-run train offers express service between Penn Station and Montauk Mondays through Fridays during the summer. The Cannonball will make stops at Southampton, Bridgehampton and Easthampton on the way to Montauk. It marks one of many changes on the LIRR for its summer service schedule, which took effect on May 19. In addition to the Cannonball express, the new schedules will offer two new Sunday trains with direct service to Penn Station and two new early morning weekday trains with enhanced service to Grand Central. Long Island Rail Road to run on new schedules beginning May 19

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Starting May 19, the Long Island Rail Road will run on new schedules, including more options to and from Montauk on weekdays and Sundays. There will not be significant changes to rush hour service; however, some departure times for midday weekdays, overnight, and weekends have been adjusted, with some trains departing earlier. More Local News See the significant schedule changes below: The 7:44 p.m. weekday train from Penn Station will add a stop at Lynbrook. The 11:57 p.m. weekday train from Penn Station will add stops at Locust Manor, Laurelton, and Rosedale. Westbound weekday service to Grand Central will start earlier, with new departures from Jamaica at 5:07 a.m. and 5:18 a.m. Midday weekday service at Mets-Willets Point, Murray Hill, Broadway, Auburndale, and Plandome is temporarily reduced to hourly for track work. For Mets day games and during the U.S. Open, half-hourly service will run at Mets-Willets Point. Normal service is expected to return in September. Summer service on the Long Beach, Montauk, and Ronkonkoma branches returns with the following improvements: The 5:13 p.m. train from Penn Station will be extended to Montauk Monday through Friday through Labor Day. On Sundays and holidays, the 11:37 a.m. and 4:18 p.m. trains from Montauk will be extended to Penn Station through Labor Day. All riders can check the TrainTime app for changes to their trip.
