Four-year-old boy dead, his mom in critical condition after being pinned beneath bus in West Vancouver

Article content A four-year-old boy was killed and two women were hospitalized after being struck by a TransLink bus in front of the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal on Wednesday afternoon. Article content Article content West Vancouver police said they were called around 3:30 p.m. to the intersection of Keith Road and Bay Street, where pedestrians were reported to be pinned under a bus. When police arrived, firefighters and paramedics were 'engaged in life-saving efforts for three individuals,' police said in a news release. Article content Article content 'Despite these efforts, a four-year-old boy was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene,' the statement said. Article content Article content 'His mother was transported to Lions Gate Hospital in critical condition. A second woman, believed to be a family friend, was taken to the same hospital and is currently in stable condition.' Article content The driver of the bus, identified as a TransLink employee, is co-operating fully with investigators and is being interviewed by police, authorities said. Article content The bus has been seized for mechanical inspection. Speed was not believed to be a contributing factor, police said. Photos from the scene shared on social media show the bus had jumped the curb. Article content B.C. Ambulance Service spokesperson Brian Twaites said four ambulances were dispatched, including advanced care paramedics, plus a supervisor and an area director. Article content 'Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to two patients,' Twaites said. 'One patient was transported to hospital in critical condition. The other patient was transported to hospital in stable condition.' Article content In an online statement, the B.C. Ferry & Marine Workers' Union said: 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss near the Horseshoe Bay terminal today. Our members are trained to respond in emergencies, and we are grateful and proud of the assistance they offered. We know this tragedy deeply affected every member at the terminal. Article content 'We also acknowledge the broader transit community, including TransLink workers, who will be feeling the weight of this event. Our hearts go out to the community and to everyone touched by this heartbreaking tragedy.'
