Auto ride in Bengaluru to get costlier; base fare at Rs 36

BENGALURU: The base autorickshaw fare is expected to increase from the existing Rs 30 to Rs 36, and the subsequent per-kilometre charges from Rs 15 to Rs 18, according to highly placed sources. Autorickshaw drivers and unions have been repeatedly urging the government to increase the fares for a long time. They have been demanding that the base fare be revised to Rs 40 and the per-kilometre charge to Rs 20. Officials from the 10 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) falling within the city limits, Deputy Commissioners of Police (Traffic) and representatives from the auto drivers' unions will be part of the District Transport Authority (DTA), which will decide the fare revisions after considering factors like existing fuel prices, traffic condition in the city and passenger demand. Based on the recommendation, the Bengaluru Urban deputy commissioner, who chairs DTA, will take the final decision on fare revision. 'Auto fares not revised since 2021' According to sources from the Bengaluru Urban DC office, the revised fares are Rs 36 and Rs 18 and is awaiting the nod of Bengaluru Urban DC Jagadeesha G. The source said the DC is heading the magisterial probe into the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium and is completely occupied with that work and once he gets free, the fares will be announced officially. Auto unions like the Autorickshaw Drivers' Union, Adarsh Auto and Taxi Drivers' Union said that they will get into the streets if the revised fares are not Rs 40 and Rs 20. 'Fares have not been revised since 2021. In all these years, prices of many things have increased. We urge the auto fare revision to be linked to the Wholesale Price Index,' said General Secretary of ARDU Rudra Murthy. Manjunath M, President of Adarsh Auto and Taxi Drivers' Union, said, 'The cost of new autos, which were Rs 1.85 lakh, is now Rs 2.85 lakh. The cost of a single bedroom has doubled from Rs 4,000 to Rs 8,000. Cost of all essentials has been increasing year after year, but the auto fares have remained the same without revision for years.' He questioned how the auto drivers are supposed to run their families.

Book HSRP appointment before June 16, else risk denial of key services

Nagpur: Despite repeated directives from the Maharashtra transport commissioner, a majority of vehicle owners in Nagpur are yet to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Now, the state transport department has warned that vehicle owners who have not fitted the HSRP plates will be denied key services after June 16. Vehicle owners who have booked appointment for HSRP fitment before this date have been exempted. On June 2, transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar issued a order directing all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the state to stop processing ownership transfers, address change in registration certificates, hypothecation entries and removals, duplicate RC issuance, vehicle modification entries, and NOCs for vehicles that are not fitted with HSRP. "Only those vehicle owners who have a valid appointment for HSRP installation will be exempted. Renewal of fitness certificates for transport vehicles and registration certificate renewals for private vehicles are currently not included in this restriction," the order stated. HSRP installation was made mandatory under Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989. The new number plates come with unique serial numbers, holograms and are tamper-proof, ensuring better tracking and security. However, several issues are hampering compliance. Many motorists complain about the cumbersome online appointment procedure and a long waiting list at dealer fitment centres. There are also reports of some dealers charging exorbitant fees, despite clear instructions that no additional charges should be levied. Furthermore, in violation of norms, some dealers are affixing the plates using screws instead of the mandatory permanent fixtures. The transport department has also clarified that imitation HSRP plates — those that merely display holograms, the 'IND' mark, or words like 'INDIA'— will not be considered valid unless they are issued by an authorised manufacturer and updated on the VAHAN portal. Owners of such vehicles risk being fined Rs1,000 under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Out of the 16.71 lakh vehicles registered in Nagpur district before April 1, 2019, only around 21.6% are fitted with valid HSRPs. Among the three RTOs in the district, the Nagpur Rural RTO has recorded the highest compliance so far, with 1.20 lakh out of 5.62 lakh vehicles fitted with the new plates. Officials expressed concern over the widespread disregard for the regulation and indicated that there will be strict enforcement of the order after June 16. Vehicle owners who fail to comply risk not just monetary penalties but also being barred from essential vehicle-related services.

448 driving licences suspended in Tiruchy in four months for traffic violations

TIRUCHY: As part of its continuing effort to curb traffic violations, driving licence of more than 448 vehicle users have been suspended in Tiruchy district since January. Three RTOs - Tiruchy West, Tiruchy East, and Srirangam function within the city, while five unit offices function in rural areas, including Thiruverumbur, Manapparai, Lalgudi, Musiri, and Thuraiyur. Based on recommendations made by Traffic Police, 448 licences have been suspended in the district in the first four months of 2025. In comparison, 634 licences were suspended in 2023, and 698 in 2024. Under the provisions of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, a driving licence can be suspended for offences such as rash driving, signal jumping, speeding, overloading, using mobile phones while driving, and drunk driving. Once a violation is detected and an e-challan is issued and the details are forwarded to the respective Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). Then, RTOs send a notification and show-cause notice to the motorist's registered mobile number and address listed on the licence. Motorists are given two weeks to respond and may submit evidence such as CCTV footage to prove they were not involved in the violation. If the response is satisfactory, no further action will be taken.
