Poshan Abhiyaan made significant strides in improving nutrition outcomes in India: Minister

Poshan Abhiyaan has made significant strides in improving nutrition outcomes in India, said Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road, Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra on Monday. Addressing an event in the national capital, Malhotra said that Poshan Abhiyaan is 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's effort and commitment to addressing India's malnutrition challenges'. 'Poshan Abhiyan has made significant strides in improving nutrition outcomes in India, particularly among children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers,' Malhotra added. Launched in 2018, the campaign to fight malnutrition has promoted healthy growth and development in the country. 'The programme has enabled a nationwide Jan Andolan, catalysing nutrition-related behavioural change and promoting positive feeding and healthcare practices,' the Minister said. He also applauded the Poshan Tracker App which enables real-time monitoring of nutrition services, ensuring timely interventions and better tracking of progress. Mission Poshan 2.0 is a Rs 1.81 lakh crore initiative (2021-26) that targets children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. It not only integrates nutrition, health, and community efforts but also uses digital tools like the Poshan Tracker -- winner of the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2024 -- to drive real-time monitoring and behavioural change. As of March 2025, a total of 99.02 per cent of beneficiaries are Aadhaar-verified, and a face authentication module ensures transparency in distributing take-home rations, according to the government. Malhotra also advocated ensuring adequate nutrition for pregnant women and lactating mothers -- crucial for healthy child development. Maternal nutrition plays a vital role in preventing health complications during childbirth and ensuring healthy birth outcomes, the MoS added. 'By prioritising nutrition, India can build a healthier, more productive, and prosperous nation, achieving its vision of a Viksit Bharat,' the Minister said.

Poshan Abhiyaan to fight malnutrition, improve health and economic productivity: Minister

New Delhi: Poshan Abhiyaan will fight malnutrition among women and children, which will improve health and boost economic productivity in the country, said Harsh Malhotra, Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road, Transport and Highways here on Friday. Malhotra noted that nutrition plays a vital role in a child's growth and adequate nutrition is essential for children to reach their full potential. He added that a well-balanced diet can have long-term benefits for their physical and emotional development. 'By addressing malnutrition and promoting good nutrition, Poshan Abhiyan can have a tremendous impact on India's human capital, economic productivity, and wholesome sustainable development,' said Malhotra. 'Poshan Abhiyaan is Modi Government's effort to make a visible shift towards malnutrition reduction and improved health, wellness and immunity,' he added. As part of the Poshan Abhiyaan, the Minister also distributed around 300 nutrition kits to the beneficiaries at Aggarwal Dharamshala Bhawan, Shakarpur, Delhi. "Poshan Abhiyan is a crucial initiative for tackling malnutrition in the country and has advocated for a mission mode approach to address the situation,' Malhotra said. 'The campaign targets children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers -- a testament to the Modi Government's focus on the holistic development of the community,' he added. Malhotra also applauded the Poshan Tracker which enables real-time monitoring of nutrition services at Anganwadi Centres where the beneficiaries can now self-register via the Poshan Tracker Web App for improved access. The Poshan Tracker enables Anganwadi Workers to manage attendance, growth monitoring, meal distribution, and early childhood education, ensuring that beneficiaries are well-tracked and supported. "Let's make a commitment to work together, ensuring that every child, mother, and family in India has access to nutritious food and a healthy future, " the Minister said. He stated that "access to better nutrition today can help for a brighter future tomorrow" which would transform the nation into a Healthier and Viksit Bharat.

At least 21 die in Sri Lanka after bus carrying pilgrims veers off cliff

COLOMBO: At least 21 people have been killed and many others injured when a bus carrying dozens of Buddhist pilgrims in central Sri Lanka careened off a cliff, according to authorities. The crash took place early on Sunday in a mountainous area near the town of Kotmale, about 140km east of the capital, Colombo. 'Twenty one have died and we are trying to identify the victims,' Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena told local media. The toll could have been higher, the minister added, if not for local residents helping pull people from the mangled wreckage and rushing them to hospital. Television footage showed the bus overturned at the bottom of a precipice while volunteers helped rescue injured people from the rubble. Police said 24 people were being treated in two hospitals. The vehicle, operated by a state-run bus company, was travelling from the pilgrim town of Kataragama in the south to the central city of Kurunegala, about 250km away. (Agencies)
