Remote Scottish cafe dubbed 'one of UK's best' – and even featured on Netflix

The Oyster Shed cafe, situated in Carbost on the Isle of Skye, has been named one of the best places to eat beside the sea in the country - and the positive Tripadvisor reviews seem to agree A cafe on the remote Isle of Skye has been dubbed 'one of the best in the UK'. The Oyster Shed, situated in the tiny village of Carbost, has also featured on a hit Netflix show such is its reputation. Its remote location didn't stop the Times naming the venue one of the 19 best places to eat beside the sea in the country. ‌ The publication said: "This tiny fish shack and farm shop overlooking Loch Harport is one of the most remote beach cafes in the country, but that didn't stop Netflix knocking on its doors last year to film an episode of it's blockbuster travel-food show, Somebody Feed Phil. ‌ "On the menu are the greatest hits of the locality - salmon smoked locally, crab, Scottish game, mussels, a selection of cheeses, grilled lobster and, of course, plenty of Scottish oysters, which you can pair with a bottle of your own wine (corkage is free)." Customers who have reviewed the food at the eatery on Tripadvisor seem to concur with this verdict. The venue has a rating of 4.4 from more than 1,000 reviews, while it was awarded the Travellers' Choice in 2024. One visitor, who had travelled all the way from Massachusetts, USA, gave the Oyster Shed five stars. They said: "This was a fun experience. The oysters were amazing. Get the large size - the bellies are an additional treat you don't normally get with oysters. "The batter dipped soft shell crabs were also excellent. Good chips. No frills dining - seated at long tables. Very tight parking lot. Beautiful view." The shop bosses make it clear that they are "not a restaurant". ‌ They say: "Opened our farm shop in premises in 2012. Customers can buy fresh oysters harvested daily. Other Skye Seafood available. "We are not a restaurant. Just a simple shop with takeaway, outdoor seating is provided. We have no toilet facilities or alcohol licence." ‌ Another customer, from Staffordshire in the UK, said: "The Oyster Shed is a no-frills but delicious stop for fresh seafood. Portion sizes are excellent and service was quick and easy." Carbost is a big tourist hub during the summer with the Talisker Distillery a significant draw along with the incredible seafood. The seafood takeaway for the Oyster Shed is open Monday to Saturday all year around with no bookings required. They also have a bring your own booze policy due to the lack of alcohol licence. ‌ Another recent visitor, all the way from Lima in Peru, was equally complimentary as they left a four-star review. They said: "One of the best options for seafood in Skye; unique experience from when you order in-store (menu is on the whiteboards behind the counter where the order is placed), then waiting in front of the container where they cook, to the community table or shelf looking at the horizon. "They have mainly oysters, fan shells and lobster, which they prepare on the grill. I went in the afternoon so there were no oysters, so I chose the grilled fan shells (5 units, large), served with chips (inevitable chips in UK). "Delicious, with extra points in sight (it was a sunny day, happily). I accompanied it with a salmon fillet "hot smoked" (traditional Scottish style of smoking)."
