New pop-up market showcases Black businesses with more than 30 vendors

A new marketplace showcasing Black-owned businesses opened in Norfolk on Feb. 1 The Black on Black Pop Up Market at 1200 East Little Creek Road features products and services provided by more than 30 vendors. From handmade crafts, fashion, jewelry and hats to plant-based foods and desserts to wellness essentials and cosmetics — everything at the market is made or sourced by a Black-owned business owner. Tree Kelty, creator and director of the market, said she has hosted vegan events at festivals throughout the U.S. She said she saw Black-owned businesses shuttering after the pandemic and wanted to provide a place for them to operate together under one roof. 'They don't have to worry about getting their own lease, bills or overhead,' she said. 'They can just come, pop up and we can circulate the Black dollar within.' When she found the 2,500-square-foot space sitting vacant, Kelty knew she could put her vision in place. There is also ample outdoor space for vendors to set up. The fee for table rentals is $50 per day. The markets are open every weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 2-6 p.m. on Sundays. In March, hours will run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Kelty also plans to host networking events and other business-oriented services during the week to help Black-owned businesses thrive. 'We had a lot of vendors that were looking and waiting for something like this,' Kelty said. 'Our goal is to create a community.' For more information, visit Sandra J. Pennecke, 757-652-5836,
