EPCC, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger host grocery pick-up for community
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Community College (EPCC) and El Pasoans Fighting Hunger hosted a grocery giveaway on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Rio Grande Campus, EPCC said in a press release.
EPCC says the giveaway was open and free to all students, faculty, staff, and the overall community. Overall, the El Pasoans Fighting Food Hunger provided food for 250 people.
'Food insecurity is a very big issue in our community… and to be able to bring food and make it available to anyone who needs it at that particular time is a priority,' Karmela Galicia, Director of Programs for El Pasoans Fighting Hunger, said. 'Right now, it's the season of gatherings and meals, and to be able to help in those situations is part of what we do. This also addresses college food insecurity for students, so to be able to partner with higher learning institutions and able to make sure that our local students are getting access to what they need and where they are is important.'
According to the Trellis Strategies Student Financial Wellness Survey, 45 percent of EPCC students experienced food insecurity last Fall.
'EPCC and El Pasoans Fighting Hunger have partnered in the past, the first being in July 2024 at the Valle Verde campus, and the second was in October at the Mission del Paso campus. This is part of a broader effort to address food insecurity on college campuses,' EPCC said.
