Michigan State hockey claims top spot in early power rankings for 2025-26 season

Michigan State hockey claims top spot in early power rankings for 2025-26 season It's the NEVER Too Early 2025-26 NCAA Hockey Power Rankings! MUCH will change over the summer as some more additions/subtractions become finalized before we start to see some final rosters released by the teams... Who do YOU think is too high, low, and or missing?!?! 🤔 Let's… — College Puck NXT (@CollegePuckNXT) May 27, 2025 Michigan State hockey was No. 1 in the country for most of this past season and one analyst thinks they'll start next season with that top spot too. College Puck NXT released a "never too early" set of college hockey power rankings for next season, and the Spartans were right at the top of their list. Michigan State just edged out Boston University and Western Michigan for the No. 1 spot in their top 10 rankings poll. From the Big Ten, rival Michigan, Penn State and Minnesota were also included in the rankings. Penn State came in at No. 5, Michigan at No. 8 and Minnesota at No. 10. The Spartans return a number of key players off last year's Big Ten title winning squad. Hobey Baker Award winner Isaac Howard is expected back for another season at Michigan State, and so is star goaltender Trey Augustine. Those two alone will raise the ceiling for what Michigan State can achieve next year. MSU hockey goalie Trey Augustine will return for junior season

Michigan State goaltender Trey Augustine will return to East Lansing for his junior season, rather than sign with the Detroit Red Wings. Augustine – a Richter Award finalist and First Team All-Big Ten goaltender – had a 2.10 goals against average and a .924 save percentage in 30 starts for the Spartans this past season, going 19-7-4 with three shutouts. Advertisement Augustine's decision was first reported by Mike McMahon of College Hockey News and confirmed by the Lansing State Journal. Augustine was selected by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft and has won back-to-back gold medals as the starter for Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championships as well as back-to-back Big Ten regular season and tournament titles as MSU's goaltender. Augustine is also one of six finalists for the Sullivan Award, given to the most outstanding amateur athlete across all collegiate sports. The ceremony and award announcement is on April 15. Augustine's return is a big piece for the Spartans, who keep stability in the net going into the next season. Augustine and the rest of MSU's squad will have a chip on their shoulder after being bounced early by Cornell in the NCAA Tournament last week. Advertisement Update: Joey Larson foregoes last year at MSU to sign with New York Islanders MSU backup goaltender Luca Di Pasquo entered the transfer portal on Monday evening, making way for incoming freshman Melvin Strahl to come in next season to backup Augustine. Spartans expected to add Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick to roster in wake of goalie news

Spartans expected to add Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick to roster in wake of goalie news There has been a lot of talk about goalies and Michigan State hockey to open the month of April, and that trend is going to continue. With Trey Augustine's decision to come back to MSU for 2025-26, and Luca Di Pasquo's subsequent decision to transfer, Michigan State is expected to add another goaltender to the roster. Current Spartan commit, and a 2023 5th round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Melvin Strahl is expected to join Michigan State as a backup goaltender to Augustine in 2025-26. A native of Solleftea, Sweden, Strahl spent his first year playing hockey in the United States as a member of the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL. He posted a 30-12 record with a 2.48 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. Strahl will now gear himself up to be the goaltender of the future for the Michigan State hockey program. Michigan State star goalie Trey Augustine pausing pro career to come back to East Lansing

Michigan State star goalie Trey Augustine pausing pro career to come back to East Lansing Michigan State hockey's 2024-25 season may have ended in massive disappointment, but the 2025-26 season just got kick started with a massive boost. Michigan State star goaltender Trey Augustine has announced that he will not be signing an entry level contract with the Detroit Red Wings, but instead will be staying in East Lansing for his junior season. The South Lyon (MI) native is a 2023 second round pick of the Red Wings, who already has a ton of accolades in his prep career. The winningest goalie in Team USA History at the IIHF World Junior Championships, he is a five time medal winner with USA. At MSU, Augustine has racked up a 42-16-6 record in 64 games with a 2.55 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, to go along with six shutouts. He was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and was the 2024-25 Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. Michigan State is poised to make another run at being the best team in America in 2025-26, and the return of Augustine is a massive first step. In response to this move, backup goalie Luca Di Pasquo has decided to enter the transfer portal.
