Banyana Banyana close to being ready for Wafcon defence, says Gamede
Bongeka Gamede is confident that Banyana Banyana will be ready to defend their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title after a perfect Tri-Nations series. Banyana were crowned champions of the series after beating Botswana 3–2 in the opener and Zambia 2–0 in the final game. While the results confirmed them as the best team in the mini-tournament, they were not at their best and had to dig deep in both matches. They nearly squandered a 3–0 half-time lead against Botswana and had to leave it late to secure the win over Zambia at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. Banyana Banyana emerged as the winners of the #ThreeNations challenge on Tuesday, a tri-nations tournament that also featured Zambia and Botswana.#LiveTheImpossible @SABC_Sport — Banyana_Banyana (@Banyana_Banyana) June 3, 2025 As such, it took standout individual performances to get them across the line. Jermaine Seoposenwe scored a brace in the opener and the winner in the final match. Gamede also made her mark, scoring a stunning goal from a direct set-piece against the Copper Queens, underlining her versatility as a defender-cum-midfielder. Reflecting on the series, the Denmark-based footballer said team unity had played a vital role in helping them win both matches, particularly the encounter against Zambia. 'I would like to congratulate the girls on their performance. We knew their strengths and how to capitalise on them,' Gamede said, to the Sasol media department. 'I think we tried to make sure they didn't attack us as much as they would have liked. But it wasn't an easy game. 'We made mistakes here and there, but we were able to help each other as a team. Going forward, we also supported each other.' Video Player is loading. With Botswana and Zambia also set to compete at the tournament, facing them now was a valuable learning experience for coach Desiree Ellis and her team. 'I think our chances of doing well at Wafcon are looking very good,' Gamede explained. 'We've played Malawi, Botswana and now Zambia – all of whom will be at Wafcon. 'So they've given us an idea of what the tournament will be like. From here, we'll continue preparing, and I think we'll be ready for Wafcon.'

May exhausted after gold medal success
Maisy May cradled her medal from the Home International fly fishing championship and declared: "It's exhausting being a gold medalist." The owner of Burnhouse Lochan Fishery near Bonnybridge was a member of the ladies squad which triumphed in tough conditions at Lough Lene and she admitted: 'I can't stop sleeping. Well and truly burnt out.' It was a tough week for the squad and Maisy revealed: 'We arrived at beautiful Lough Lene and our homework told us that it would be a hard water and when we were in the boat we soon realised why. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'The water was gin clear, the majority of it was shallow and it had a light sandy bottom, you could see everything, beautiful to look at, but not ideal for a competition. Some of the squad 'Our training days went well, in fact, they went very well. Our team picked up a good number of fish every day. We worked hard and gained an incredible amount of information on flies, lines, areas and times. 'We could also see that the other teams weren't having quite as much luck so our heads were held high and we were confident. However, even though on our last training day we were still picking up fish, it was beginning to slow and I made an early prediction that the International match would see a lot of blanks from all nations. 'There were, in fact, 25 blanks out of 36 ladies. The water bowed to the pressure and the soaring heat. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We left the water exhausted, burnt to a crisp and emotional. I had a good cry on the bus while the score cards were being tallied and when we were called back to the shore for the results I don't think I took a breath. We all broke down when England were read as silver. We increased the water level with tears.' Scotland Ladies celebrate She added: 'The homework, the hard work, it all paid off. We were bringing the gold back to Scotland. It was painfully close though, it came down to 1cm.' Manager Iain Earle shared his knowledge and the squad were 'gutted' he couldn't come to Ireland but Gary Hamilton stepped-in as our manager and Maisy said: 'We could see how much it meant to Gary when we lifted that trophy.' There was disappointment, however, for Scotland's ladies carp fishing team in the Tri-Nations in Wales. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad They had hoped to move on from their silver medal 12 months ago to claim top spot despite having a new-look team, but England prevailed in the 48-hour event with Wales in the silver medal slot. The squad worked as hard as they could and a spokesman said: 'We can walk away feeling very proud of ourselves and our efforts.' Meanwhile, Ronnie Couper won the Stillwater Bank fund-raiser at Drumtassie with Wilie Carr second and Richard Gray third. Typical Scottish weather greeted the participants with sun, rain, hail and wind. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Locally, Bowden Springs near Linlithgow is back in action after a week-long break and nearby Linlithgow Loch say the most successful set-ups recently have been floating lines, midge-tip and Di7 with orange blob/FAB, buzzer, diawl bach, black and green lures, dries, including daddies, and Nemos. Millhall near Polmont confirm that the water is still producing consistent sport with successful flies including damsel, cormorant, diawl bach, buzzers, egg flies and dries. Allandale Tarn near West Calder report decent dry fly action and Glencrose boss Bill Taylor advises that the current web site for the popular fishery above Flotterstone will cease to operate fom August. Kenny Knox, the incoming owner, proposes to start a new site. In East Lothian, regular Kevin Walkinshaw (Gorebridge) had 16 on FAB and buzzers at Newlands Tweeddale and the next late closing day is on Friday, May 30 (today) with fishing from 9am to 9pm. Derek Plenderleith, fishing manager, said: 'Due to lack of interest, the fishery will only offer late closing on a Friday.' He was the only angler to return a card from the three-hour event on Seacliffe Beach near North Berwick. It was fished in a north-east swell of between 6ft and 10ft with loads of weed in the water. Secretary James Ogilvie said: 'We stuck it out in a biting easterly wind.' Green's fish was 23cm and he took both pools on the night. Round five is next week at a venue to be confirmed this weekend on the club's Facebook page. Carp team aiming high in Tri-Nations
Scotland's ladies carp fishing team are looking to make a big impression in their third Tri-Nations clash with Wales and England. Sign up to our daily newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! The team are at Gweryd Lakes near Mold and captain, Catherine Robertson, said that the small water requires, pin-point accuracy with casting during the 48-hour event. Only half of last season's team remain so Scotland have three newcomers and they have been split to ensure that each one has an experienced angler with them. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Catherine is paired with Jackie Rhodes-Muir who has been coarse fishing on the Clyde for around 20 years while Eleanor Mitchell, Scotland's vice-captain, is paired with Joanna Sauberlich. Niki Wildman fishes with Kimberley Lee. Catherine Robertson (left), Niki Wildman and team manager, Callum Reid A major blow is that team manager, Callum 'The Viking' Reid, can't be there as it is the Bank Holiday weekend and he can't be away from busy Wyreside Lakes near Lancaster, home base for the ladies team, however, Lynn England is travelling and will act as support. That's a vital role as she will relay messages about any changes in tactics she notes from other competitors. Reid will, however, be available on the phone during the gruelling event in which the women are not allowed to leave their designated area, but they can use what's app to communicate with each other. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Catherine said high temperatures could have a big bearing on fishing as it could make the fish lethargic and unlikely to feed as the lake depth averages from 5ft to 8ft. Scotland's squad had been tying hook lengths to suit and expect to use either boilies or pop ups during the contest which will undoubtedly test them. Catherine said: 'It's a small water so we don't expect to have to cast further than 80 yards but we will have to be deadly accurate with our casting. 'I've been busy at work so have not been able to get down there to practice, but Eleanor has fished it before and so will be able to help with preparation.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Tartan Team won silver last year and would love to go one better this time and they benefited from a recent match against the Army at the A1 Pits in Nottinghamshire. Since then, they have communicated regularly, despite the distances between them. Catherine and Niki live in Glasgow, Jackie in Dunbartonshire, while Eleanor is based in the Home Counties. Joanna is on Tayside while Kimberley is in Paisley and Lynn who is orginally from Aberdeenshire. The increasing status of the team has encouraged sponsorship with Trident Leads coming on board to join Nutrabaits and end tackle from Mudman Outdoors and Catherine said: 'We've continuing to develop as a team and a significant result here would be a great boost to us.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Elsewhere, James Dornom (correct) from Currie was second in the Scottish Federation of Coarse Anglers Open at Strathclyde Park behind Jamie McClymont with Gus Brindle third. Dornom totalled 395 grammes with McClymont well out in front with 775g. Brindle from Dunfermline had 325g with David Joseph was fourth on 250g and Scott Robertson fifth on 205g. Brindle, who was the organiser, said he was disappointed that only 19 of the 31 who had booked to fish turned up. He added: 'With all of the roach away at the other side of loch in spawning mode, it made for an exceptionally tough day for everyone. 'This was not helped by the hot, bright and still conditions at the start of the match and the fact that the decaying blanket weed on the bottom of the loch was breaking away and floating to the surface.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The wind picked up considerably and proceeded to blow straight in the faces of the anglers for four hours making presentation difficult, if not impossible, at times. Darrin Ferguson won the second round of the Summer League organised by Edinburgh and Lothians Coarse Angling club with a bag of 34lb 9oz, fishing a strong match with worm. He also lost fish. Second was John Perella with 26lb 12oz and third Mark Gleave with 20lb. Ferguson and Perella both have ten points and lead the silverware chase with Stewart Ritchie third one nine points with Simon Clynshaw from East Lothian fourth a point behind. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad On to fly fishing and Millhall near Polmont continues to provide good sport with CDC, Top Hat, FAB, buzzer, snakes, egg, nymphs and apps bloodworm among the most successful patterns.. Nearby, the hot weather is making things tough for fishermen at Linlithgow Loch but orange blob, buzzer, diawl bach, black Mamba, black and green lures and dries have been working. Bowden Springs re-opens on Monday after being shut this week. Elsewhere, the Esk Rivers Fishery Board and Trust have issued an advisory note due to the prolonged dry and hot spell. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad John Mitchell, chairman of the Esk District Salmon Fishery Bord, said water temperatures, they say, remain within acceptable limits for safe fishing in respect of fish welfare but the river heights are what they term 'extremely low'. A statement on social media said that they are not recommending the closure of fisheries although they recommend fishing early in the morning and in the event to minimise stress to the fish. Bosses intend to keep the situation under review.
