15 people were on boat that exploded in Fort Lauderdale on Memorial Day: FWC

The boat that exploded in Fort Lauderdale on Memorial Day — injuring 11 people — was a 39-foot Sea Ray with 15 people on board, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Tuesday. The vessel exploded in the Intracoastal Waterway, near the New River Triangle sandbar, around 5:45 p.m. Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard told the Miami Herald. Eleven people — including two young children — were hospitalized with injuries. Some were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn unit in Miami, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said. Emergency dispatcher communications tell of a chaotic scene with several people in the water and people suffering burn injuries. The injured children include a 5 year old, a paramedic said on scanner audio reviewed by the Herald. 'A lot of them had burns to much of their body,' fire rescue spokesperson Frank Guzman said. In the immediate aftermath of the fire, Guzman said he was not aware of any fatalities. READ MORE: Multiple people injured in Fort Lauderdale boat explosion, Fire Rescue says The FWC, which is leading the probe into the incident, responded to the scene at 6 p.m. A Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue investigator was also on scene. Monday's blast is at least the second major boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale in the last six months. On Dec. 24, a boat was engulfed in flames after it exploded at Lauderdale Marina while a boater was fueling up, killing a man and injuring five others. In 2024, the FWC investigated 33 boat fires and explosions, with half of those cases involving fuel, according to the agency's annual report. 'Please don't let me die' Bret Triano and Marisa Toomsen were hanging out at the sandbar in the Intracoastal when they saw the boat explode. 'There was this boat trying to leave the sandbar and when they went to start their boat up, it just exploded,' Triano said. 'It was a huge fireball and people were kind of falling off the boat, so we ...just tried to go help out.' After getting a friend to call 911, the two got in their dinghy and pulled a man who was in his 30s out of the water. He was screaming, and his skin was burned 'pretty badly,' Toomsen said. The two good Samaritans got the man to shore, where the Coast Guard was waiting. 'He was saying, 'Save me, please don't let me die,'' Triano said. Miami Herald reporter Pierre Taylor contributed to this report.

Video shows moment boat explodes near Fort Lauderdale sandbar, sending victims into the water

A dramatic video shows the terrifying moment a boat exploded near a Fort Lauderdale sandbar on Memorial Day, hurling several people , including two children, into the water in a burst of flames. The video, taken just before 6 p.m. Monday near Lauderdale Marina, captures the boat bursting into fire and victims tumbling overboard. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said 13 people were onboard, including a dog. Ten of them, eight adults and two children ages 5 and 7, were rushed to the hospital. The children were taken to the burn unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital and are in fair condition, while the adults are listed in good condition. Boat explosion caught on video The explosion occurred near 9th Street, in a popular boating area where sandbars attract holiday crowds. Fire officials said the boat was anchored when it suddenly erupted. The video showed the blast followed by frantic splashing as bystanders jumped into the water to help. Bret Triano, who was nearby at the time, said the boat had just been refueled when it exploded. "There was a huge fireball and people were kind of falling off the boat," he said. "One man was yelling, 'Save me, please don't let me die, I'm so hot, I need water.'" Triano and others rushed over in a dinghy to pull victims from the water as others called 911. Burned father says gas leak may be to blame Antonio Rivera, one of the burn victims, said he believes a fuel leak may have caused the explosion. "We tried to fuel up the boat and it must've been a gas leak and a spark went off and an explosion," Rivera said. "My wife and my kids, they'll be okay — there's nothing permanent — but they did get third-degree burns." Officials said a dog on board was rescued and is unharmed. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Fort Lauderdale Police are now investigating the cause of the blast. "There are no fatalities as far as we know," said Fire Rescue spokesperson Frank Guzman, adding that some of the injuries were classified as Level 1 traumas due to their severity.

11 hospitalized, including 2 kids, after boat explosion in Florida

Nearly a dozen people, including two children, were hospitalized after a boat explosion and fire in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Memorial Day evening, officials said. The incident was reported around 5:45 p.m. Monday near the New River Triangle, not far from the Lauderdale Yacht Club on Southeast 12th Court. U.S. Coast Guard officials said there were 13 people on board the boat when there was an explosion. 'For reasons that we don't know yet, a boat exploded, it tossed people into the water, good Samaritans came over right away and started rescuing them,' Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman said. 'It's too soon to know how this happened. We have a fire investigator on scene, as well.' Footage from a surveillance camera captured the moment the fireball erupted on the boat, and showed multiple people spilling into the water. Guzman confirmed there were 11 patients, including two children, who were initially taken to Broward Health Medical Center. 'A number of the patients had significant burns and are being transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they have a burn unit,' Guzman said. 'A lot of them had burns to much of their body.' Officials at Jackson Memorial said they received 10 patients, including eight adults who were in good condition and two children who were in fair condition. One patient had to be intubated. Antonio Rivero said he was with family members on the boat when it went up in flames. 'Tried to fuel up the boat, and must have been a gas leak and, you know, spark went off and explosion,' Rivero said. 'One of the guys' pants were blown off, so it was bad.' Rivero, 32, suffered burns to his arm, but his wife, Cassandra, and their two children remained hospitalized Monday night. 'They're OK because they're on a lot of meds, but other than that they're fine,' he said. At least one witness reported seeing an explosion and said they saw multiple people with burn injuries who were brought to the yacht club docks. The victims had burned legs and bathing suits that appeared ripped and burned to shreds, the witness said. Two other witnesses said they were on a dinghy at the sandbar when the boat exploded. 'When they went to start their boat up, it just exploded. There was a huge fireball and people were kind of falling off the boat,' Bret Triano said. 'We were at the sandbar too and we just tried to go help out.' Triano and Marisa Toomesn were able to rescue some of the victims. 'There were a couple boats trying to pick people up and one guy just didn't get picked up so we went over to him,' Triano said. 'He was screaming.' 'He was burned pretty badly,' Toomesn said. 'He was saying, 'Save me. Please, don't let me die. I'm so hot, I need water,'' Triano said. 'He just kept repeating, 'I want water, I want water.'' Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed Fort Lauderdale Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Broward Sheriff's Office assisting Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. Crews were seen examining the boat involved, which was tied up to a nearby sea wall. Guzman said crews also rescued a dog that had been on the boat that wasn't injured. The FWC and fire officials will investigate the cause of the explosion.

Health care innovation in NYC helps people walk again and create healthier futures

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Robotics are helping people walk for the first time, and researchers are fighting Alzheimer's and cancer inside the building at the corner of East 26th Street and Park Avenue South in Manhattan. Twenty-one health care innovators call the building home. The wall says Cure because that's the name of the company that connects global leaders in life sciences, digital health, and technology to investors and governments. More Local News The collaboration is designed to build a healthier and more vibrant future. Wandercraft is one of the firms. Its technology has created exoskeletons for people with mobility issues. On Thursday, 33-year-old Zachary Triano was on site to take a giant step in his life. Living with cerebral palsy, he has been in a wheelchair for most of his life. 'I've experienced walking as never before. The robot helps me get the foot down flat and for balance. I've been using muscles I never used before. It's amazing. It's a big deal,' he said. The exoskeleton provides support and assists in movement inside the rehabilitation center. Wandercraft is working on a home version. Triano supplies the inspiration. He saw the technology at a conference three weeks ago. He immediately signed up and has already logged 1,800 steps with the goal of a mile. 'I'm hoping if I take enough steps with this machine that it will teach my brain and I can relearn how to walk,' he said. Seema Kumar is the CEO of CURE. She calls the campus an ecosystem. 'Bringing it all together and putting it under one roof, you create a collision of great ideas that move things forward and accelerate it,' she said. Matthew Masselin is the CEO of Wandercraft. It's a personal mission for him as a friend faces life with mobility issues. 'Things do not happen without relationships and if you do not know each other. Cure is about creating an environment where those relationships can happen,' he said. The official says the campus creates a place where science and dreams can become real with the right financing and support systems. Success can be measured in steps and smiles.
