Over 32,000 people in Kolli Hills to be screened for hemoglobinopathy
Namakkal District Collector S. Uma said on Monday that 32,034 people in Kolli Hills will be screened for hemoglobinopathy.
As part of the Tribal Health Programme, the Tamil Nadu Government undertakes hemoglobinopathy (specifically sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia) screening and provides treatment to those affected by hemoglobinopathy.
In Namakkal district, the screening programme will be conducted in Kolli Hills for the next six months.
The Collector said that in the fiscal year 2023-24, as many as 1,827 school students studying in Class VI to Plus Two and in 2024-25, 3,150 students were screened. From April 2022 to February 2025, 1,941 pregnant women were screened. '
In the next six months, from newborns to people aged below 40 (around 32,034 people residing in Kolli Hills) will be screened under this programme. Five teams, consisting of six members each, have been deployed for the purpose, the Collector added.
