Argentina bans 15,000 violent fans from stadiums during Club World Cup in U.S. this summer
Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich handed the United States Embassy in Buenos Aires a list of 15,000 violent football fans from Argentina who will be banned from stadiums during this summer's Club World Cup, taking place at stadiums across the United States. Bullrich provided the list on Monday, roughly one month before the expanded tournament, which will feature two of the country's most famous clubs, River Plate and Boca Juniors. Advertisement 'For us, this is extremely important because no violent person who has committed any crime in Argentine stadiums will be able to attend this sporting event,' Bullrich told reporters. Bullrich dramatically unrolled the long list of these violent fans during a televised press conference, as seen in a clip published by Clarín, Argentina's largest newspaper. The list was compiled through the government's Tribuna Segura program, which roughly translates to 'Safer Stands.' The tool allows officials to detect people who have been banned from stadiums in Argentina. According to Bullrich, the agency has used the tool to monitor more than 4 million people across 1,328 matches, detecting 1,166 people with arrest warrants and issuing more than 40 resolutions to restrict their entry. The expanded Club World Cup will run from June 14 to July 13, featuring 32 teams from around the world. The tournament is expected to be a dry run for U.S. cities ahead of the men's World Cup in 2026. Boca and River, two of Argentina's most recognized clubs with a historic rivalry, will feature in separate parts of the country. River Plate's group stage games are set for the West Coast at Lumen Field in Seattle and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., where they face Group E opponents Urawa Red Diamonds, Monterrey and Inter Milan. Meanwhile, Boca, one of the former clubs of Diego Maradona, will feature at Hard Rock Stadium near Miami and Geodis Park in Nashville, Tenn., alongside Bayern Munich, Auckland City and Benfica in Group C. It's not unusual for federal agencies like the Argentine ministry to share sensitive information about violent football fans with host nations ahead of major football tournaments. The risk of fan violence was a major concern ahead of the 1994 World Cup, played in nine cities across the U.S. Organizers of that tournament told The Athletic last year that English law enforcement shared information on 'known hooligans' with U.S. officials — though that proved more preventative than necessary after England failed to qualify for the tournament. Advertisement As it pertains to this summer, Manchester City and Chelsea fans who have been subject to a Football Banning Order (FBO) will also be prevented from traveling to the U.S. for the Club World Cup after legislation from the UK Home Office issued last month. Around 150 fans of the two clubs will have to surrender their passports for the duration of the competition or face punishment. Any fans wishing to travel will need permission from the FBO Authority.
