Mets' Mark Vientos 'going through all the testing' on hamstring after injury vs. Dodgers

Mets 3B/DH Mark Vientos fell after running out of the batter's box in the 10th inning on Monday night in Los Angeles against the Dodgers and appeared to grab his hamstring in pain. After New York's 4-3 win, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Vientos was getting checked out by the trainers, but the injury "didn't look good." Advertisement "Yeah I was just there in the training room, he's getting looked at by the trainers, it's the hamstring obviously," Mendoza said. "Didn't look good. Like I said, he's going through all the testing so we'll wait and see." Vientos entered the game as a pinch-hitter for DH Jared Young in the top of the eighth inning and flied out. He finished the game 0-for-2 and is hitting just .230 on the year with six home runs and 21 RBI over 53 games. The Mets will now "wait and see" like Mendoza said as to what's next if Vientos is to miss time on the injured list. Brett Baty started at third base on Monday and has been strong defensively (in addition to at the plate) since returning from a stint in Syracuse, as the two have split time starting. Vientos heading to the IL could open up a roster spot for Ronny Mauricio to return to the bigs, as the slugging prospect has been on a tear in Triple-A. Mendoza said Saturday that the team has been getting "really good" reports on Mauricio, but they intend for him to get more reps while patiently "watching" his progress. Mauricio could fit in at 3B, 2B, and even DH.

Yankees bullpen shakeup sends veteran lefty to free agency

Tyler Matzek's brief time in the Bronx has ended, at least for now. The Yankees announced Monday that the veteran left-hander cleared waivers and has rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A. Instead, Matzek will test free agency, leaving the door open for a new opportunity with another club or a potential reunion with the Yankees on a minor league deal. The 34-year-old southpaw was designated for assignment last week to make room for the return of Jonathan Loaisiga, who came off the injured list after missing the start of the season because of Tommy John surgery. Loaisiga has looked sharp in his first appearances back, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. His return immediately strengthened a Yankees bullpen that's been searching for consistency. Left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek© Dave Nelson-Imagn Images Matzek, meanwhile, struggled to find his footing in New York. In 6 1/3 innings, he allowed just three runs but did so while giving up 11 hits and issuing five walks. While he struck out 20% of the batters he faced (seven of 35), his inability to limit traffic on the bases raised concerns. Advertisement A former first-round draft pick and top prospect, Matzek's career has been a roller coaster of early promise, dominant stretches, and persistent injury setbacks. He enjoyed a remarkable resurgence with the Braves in 2020 and 2021, pitching to a combined 2.64 ERA over 92 innings and playing a key role in Atlanta's 2021 World Series run. But shoulder issues and Tommy John surgery in 2022 derailed his progress. There were signs of life during his time with the Yankees. His fastball averaged 94.5 miles per hour, down from his peak of 96 mph in 2021, but noticeably improved from his pre-surgery velocity. After missing the entire 2023 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, he was hoping for a fresh start in pinstripes. Yankees' Jonathan Loaisiga pitches two scoreless, DJ LeMahieu has multi-hit game in Triple-A

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, had a few major names continuing their rehabs in Wednesday's game. The RailrRiders played two against the Rochester Red Wings with DJ LeMahieu, Jonathan Loaisiga and Clayton Beeter making appearances in the daycap. Advertisement Loaisiga made his first Triple-A appearance this season on Wednesday and was dominant. The right-hander pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Loaisiga pitched three games with Single-A prior to being moved to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In those appearances, he pitched 3.1 innings while allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven batters. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that there's currently no plan for the 30-year-old to rejoin the team on their upcoming West Coast trip, but the skipper wants Loaisiga to make six appearances, with the last one on consecutive days before the team deems him ready. As for LeMahieu, the veteran infielder continued his impressive rehab outing. LeMahieu went 2-for-3 in his first Triple-A outing. In seven games playing with Double-A and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, LeMahieu is 9-for-19 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Advertisement Boone has raved about LeMahieu's progress, and wanted to re-evaluate how LeMahieu is feeling after two rehab games in Triple-A. Once LeMahieu plays one more game, the Yankees could potentially activate him for the upcoming West Coast road trip that starts Friday. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. out for weeks with an oblique, the Yankees are looking to use LeMahieu primarily at second base alongside youngster Jorbit Vivas. Everson Pereira had a notable game, going 2-for-4 with a two-run shot. The outfielder is hitting .295 with Triple-A this season. Also, Bryan De La Cruz launched his first home run with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. The recently acquired outfielder went 1-for-3 on Wednesday and is 3-for-14 in four games with the RailRiders this season.
