Sidney Crosby named to Canada's 2026 Olympic team

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is going to the Olympics again. Crosby was named to Team Canada for the 2026 Olympic Games, Hockey Canada announced on Monday. Crosby is one of the first six players named to the men's team, joining Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar from the Avalanche, Connor McDavid from the Oilers, Brayden Point from the Lightning and Sam Reinhart from the Panthers. It will be 37-year-old Crosby's third appearance in the Olympics, representing Team Canada as an alternate captain in 2010 and captain in 2014. In 2010, Crosby scored the medal-winning "Golden Goal" in overtime against the United States. "I am honoured to be named one of the first six players for Canada's men's hockey team at the 2026 Olympics alongside Nathan, Cale, Connor, Brayden and Sam, as all five are incredible players and leaders," Crosby said in a press release from Hockey Canada. "I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Canada at the Olympics, as I know how much pride comes with wearing the Maple Leaf on the international stage." Crosby is the 26th player to join the "Triple Gold Club," winning the Stanley Cup and gold medals at the Olympic Games and the World Championships. And he's the only member of the club to captain all three of those teams. Crosby recently finished his 20th season with the Penguins, achieving his 20th point-per-game season, surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history. The 2026 Olympics will be held in Milan and Cortina, Italy, in February.

Crosby AND Malkin Named to Quarter Century Team

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has seen a hockey game in the last 25 years that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was one of the first players named to the NHL's Quarter Century Team. Perhaps the slight surprise is that teammate Evgeni Malkin, who is far more than deserving but perennially snubbed for such honors, was also named to the team. The Quarter-Century Team was selected through a two-stage campaign that included input from NHL officials, followed by a league-wide fan vote. Advertisement Crosby and Malkin were both selected, though teammate Kris Letang was not. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2000 through today, Crosby ranks at or near the top in every major regular-season category, including games played (1,311, 14th), goals (602, 2nd), assists (1,035, 2nd), points (1,637, 1st) game-winning goals (93, 3rd) and overtime goals (22, 2nd). Crosby's trophy cabinet is full. He has three Stanley Cups, three Ted Lindsay awards, two Hart Trophies, 'Rocket' Richard trophies, Conn Smythe trophies, and Art Ross Trophies. He also became the 26th member of the Triple Gold Club by winning a Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold Medal (2010, '14), and World Championship (2015). Crosby is the only member of the Club to have captained all three teams. Advertisement Crosby is generally considered a top-five player of all time, with Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr. This season, Crosby broke Gretzky's mark with his 20th consecutive season of at least a point per game. Malkin has come a long way since 'Three years, Super League,' the phrase he used as a rookie to win an argument with Crosby over who should go last onto the ice moments before their first warmup together in the 2006-07 season. Malkin had to go to extraordinary lengths just to make it to the NHL, hiding in the Helsinki airport and a local apartment just to get away from his Russian team that used military tactics to keep him. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound forward has scored 514 goals, 832 assists and 1,346 points, which rank sixth, fifth and fourth, respectively, among all players since 2000. Advertisement In the playoffs, Malkin has been 'Fire,' registering 180 points (67-113-180). He ranks second behind only Crosby over the last 25 years of playoff performances. Malkin reached the 100-point mark three times during his career, first during the 2007-08 season, then '08-09 and '11-12 seasons. He is one of eight players to do so three or more times. He also reached the 50-goal mark during the '11-12 season, the year he won the Hart Trophy. While Crosby has 10 All-Star nods, Malkin has seven and five First-Team NHL All-Star awards, two Art Ross Trophies (2009, '12), one Hart Trophy (2012), one Ted Lindsay Award (2012), one Calder Trophy (2007), and one Conn Smythe Trophy (2009). He's also been voted Team MVP by his teammates on five separate occasions. Malkin has also set the standard among Russian players with 832 assists. He ranks second in goals (514) and points (1,346) among all Russian-born players. The post Crosby AND Malkin Named to Quarter Century Team appeared first on Pittsburgh Hockey Now.

Penguins captains Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin named to NHL Quarter-Century Team

As the NHL names its top players of the last 25 years as part of its Quarter-Century Team, two current Penguins have made the cut. Penguins' captain Sidney Crosby and alternate captain Evgeni Malkin were both named to the team. The NHL's Quarter-Century Team was selected in a two-stage process that included input from league officials and then a fan vote. To be eligible to be named to the team, players had to have been active in the NHL at any time between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2024. In the last 25 years, Crosby ranks near the top of several regular season categories, including games played with 1,311, good for 14th; goals with 602, good for second; assists with 1,035, good for second; points with 1,637, good for first; 93 game-winning goals which is good for third; and 22 overtime goals, good for second. When you look at the playoffs, Crosby is top ten in every category. His 180 games played put him sixth, 71 goals put him third, 130 assists put him first, 201 points put him first, and 126 even-strength points put him first. Crosby is also a member of the Triple Gold Club, having won a Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold Medal, and World Championship, and is the only member of the club to captain his team to all three. He also adds two Conn Smythe Awards as playoff MVP, two scoring titles, and two Hart Memorial Trophy wins as league MVP. Meanwhile, his counterpart Evgeni Malkin has also been a dominant force in the NHL since he debuted in the 2006-07 season. Malkin's 514 regular-season goals put him sixth, his 832 assists put him fifth, and his 1,346 points put him fourth among all players since the year 2000. His 180 playoff points put him second only behind Sidney Crosby. Malkin, like Crosby, has won the Conn Smythe Award, a Hart Memorial Trophy, and two scoring titles. He was also named the Rookie of the Year in 2007, receiving the Calder Trophy.

These are the third worlds, and first since 2015 for Crosby, a three-time Stanley Cup winner (2009, '16 and '17) and double Olympic champion (2010 and '14). Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon back together for Canada at the ice hockey worlds after 10 years

Be aware: Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon join forces to play for Canada at the ice hockey world championship after 10 years. As all eyes are on the NHL playoffs, the two major stars are in Europe for the worlds opening across the Swedish capital of Stockholm and Denmark's city of Herning. It is the final men's international test before the 2026 Winter Games in Italy, where NHL players return to the Olympics after 12 years. The two friends and neighbors in Halifax, Nova Scotia, were on the team that Crosby captained to gold at the 2015 worlds. By winning the tournament in Prague then, Crosby joined hockey's Triple Gold Club, a small group of players who have won the Stanley Cup, the Olympics and the worlds. MacKinnon opted to join Canada after his Colorado Avalanche were knocked out in the first round. It will be the fourth worlds and and first since 2017 for the 29-year-old center, who recorded the second highest points in the regular season — 116 — and added another 11 in the playoffs. Crosby will also reunite with goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury who just exited the NHL but postponed his retirement at age 40 to play again with Crosby and at the worlds for the first time. 'It'll be fun to go spend some time together and yell at him in practice a bit, keep him honest,' said Fleury, who won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins three times. Among the rising stars, Canada includes the 18-year-old Macklin Celebrini, the top pick in the 2024 NHL draft who collected 63 points from 25 goals and 38 assists in his rookie season for the San Jose Sharks. Canada is the most successful nation at the tournament with 28 titles and is a favorite every year no matter who is available. With Crosby and MacKinnon, it is definitely the team to beat. Other contenders David Pastrnak is back for the defending champion Czech Republic after his Boston Bruins didn't advance to the playoffs. The Czechs beat Switzerland 2-0 in the final in Prague last year with Pastrnak scoring the winner. It was the seventh title won by the Czech Republic — or Czechia — since the 1993 breakup of Czechoslovakia. Pastrnak racked up 106 points in the NHL, reaching one hundred for the third straight season. Utah captain Clayton Keller also will captain a U.S. that is seeking a first worlds medal since a bronze in 2021. Alternate captains, forward Tage Thompson of the Buffalo Sabres and forward Conor Garland of the Vancouver Canucks, were on that team four years ago. Columbus defenseman Zach Werenski and Boston net-minder Jeremy Swayman were on the team that was fifth last year. Filip Forsberg will appear again for the Sweden team that beat Canada 4-2 in the bronze-medal game last year. The left winger will return home to play in two regular season games between Nashville and the Penguins in Stockholm in November as part of the the NHL global series. Others on the Sweden squad include New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad and New Jersey defenseman Jonas Brodin and goalie Jacob Markstrom. The 2022 champion Finland struggled at the previous two worlds, finishing seventh and eighth, its worst results in decades. Nashville goalie Justus Annunen, Chicago forward Teuvo Teravainen and Rangers forward Juuso Parssinen hope to help turn things around. Switzerland features a trio from New Jersey; forwards Nico Hischier and Timo Meier and defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler. The format The 16 teams are divided into two groups for the preliminary round. Canada is in Group A in Stockholm with Sweden, Finland, Austria, France, Latvia, Slovakia and newcomer Slovenia. Group B in Herning includes the Czechs, Switzerland, the U.S., Denmark, Germany, another newcomer Hungary, Kazakhstan and Norway. The top four in each group make the quarterfinals. From the semifinals, all games will be in Stockholm at the iconic Avicii Arena, previously known as Globen. The final and bronze-medal game are scheduled for May 25.
