For Patriots fans, David Andrews' retirement has air of finality to it

'One by one, our old friends are gone.' — Johnny Ola, 'The Godfather Part II' If the question ever comes up during Trivia Night at Winter Hill Brewing Company, Joe Cardona was the last active New England Patriot from the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. But in announcing in an April 29 news release that Cardona had been released, the Pats left out the important stuff, the stuff worth remembering. Advertisement Such as Cardona's being the last remaining Patriot with a team-issued Super Bowl ring or two locked away in the family jewelry box. Or that Cardona was the last Patriot with license to begin a story with, 'So one day Tom Brady and I walked into a bar, see, and …' Yet that's exactly how it felt Monday when the Patriots held a news conference to announce the retirement of center David Andrews, though he was released from the Patriots on March 13, some six weeks before Cardona was cut loose. It's just that it would have been a tad awkward for the Patriots to hold a news conference that March morning. For one thing, Andrews was still an active player, free to sign with another team. You don't want to hold a party for a player you've just released and then wake up the next morning to find out he signed with the New York Jets. Besides, talk about bad timing! It so happened that March 13, the Patriots held a news conference to unveil four free-agent additions: defensive tackle Milton Williams, cornerback Carlton Davis III, offensive lineman Morgan Moses and linebacker Robert Spillane. It was a day of out with the old and in with the new at Gillette Stadium, except that only the new got a news conference. But, yes, Andrews has decided to retire. There will be no triumphant return to Gillette Stadium this season in a rival uniform. Brady returned as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Adam Vinatieri as an Indianapolis Colt, Willie McGinest as a Cleveland Brown, and so on. The next time Andrews returns to Gillette Stadium for a Pats game, it'll either be an outing with the family or in some public appearance capacity. The smart money has him clanging the bell in Robert Kraft's beloved end zone lighthouse in the run-up to New England's Sept. 7 season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. Before reading the next sentence, please note that no disrespect is intended for Cardona and other holdover Patriots from the Super Bowl days who have moved on since the new coaching staff moved in, including cornerback Jonathan Jones, defensive end Deatrich Wise and linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley. But the Andrews news conference serves as a reminder, as if any Patriots fan needed one, how much has changed down Foxboro way. Consider that the Andrews news conference included video tributes from teammates from the good old days, including Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, Matthew Slater and, of course, ol' No. 12. It must have been impossible for any Pats fan to watch coverage of the news conference and not daydream. One mean blocking machine. For a decade, David Andrews defined what it meant to be a Patriot 👏 — NFL Films (@NFLFilms) June 3, 2025 Andrews was as solid a player as any team could hope for, even more so considering he was signed as a rookie free agent May 8, 2015, six days after the draft. I always like to look back on when a player signed with a team to measure how much, if any, media hoo-ha was attached to the news. With Andrews there was nothing. Just various 'Transactions' mentions that the Patriots had signed seven rookie free agents, including this David Andrews kid from Georgia, plus receiver Chris Harper of Vanderbilt, cornerback Eric Patterson of Ball State, defensive back Jimmy Jean of Alabama-Birmingham, and so on. Advertisement Next thing you know, it's Week 1 and Andrews is the starting center because Bryan Stork was dealing with a concussion and neck injury. As the season rolled along, with the Pats off to a 7-0 start, the Andrews hoo-ha began — that is, as much hoo-ha as can be bestowed on a player who was an unknown during training camp. Such as this Nov. 3 Associated Press dispatch: 'David Andrews, the center who has played every snap of the 7-0 start, is an undrafted rookie free agent who carries his load like a veteran.' And here we are, a decade later. Monday's news conference was about a retirement, sure, but it was also about preparing Andrews for his new role as a distinguished member of the New England Patriots Super Bowl Ring Club. These things matter with the Patriots, whose annual media guide used to include images of miniature Lombardi trophies with each player's bio to indicate how many Super Bowl-winning teams he's played on. It was two of them for Andrews — Super Bowl LI (the 28-3 game) and Super Bowl LIII. .@dandrews61 announces his retirement from the New England Patriots. — New England Patriots (@Patriots) June 2, 2025 That's why the Andrews presser had a sense of finality to it, not just for one player's career but for one team's two decades of dominance. It was like a high school reunion, and you know what happens at those things: Somebody brings along an old yearbook, which gets passed around while good times are being remembered and re-celebrated. The yearbook then gets returned to the dusty bookshelf from whence it came. And everyone goes home. Insofar as his playing career is concerned, David Andrews has gone home. As have Joe Cordona. Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise, Ja'Whaun Bentley … This year, for the first time since 2001, the Patriots media guide will have no miniature Lombardi trophies next to the players' names.

Markle responds to fan's concern with handwritten letter

Amber Raiken, The Independent Meghan Markle went to extreme lengths to reassure a fan who was concerned about the backlash she'd receive for her new show. Leading up to the release of With Love, Meghan on Netflix, Amanda Hirsch — who hosts the popular Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast — voiced her concerns about the duchess. Hirsch posted a picture of the trailer for the Netflix program in January, with the caption: 'You guys I'm scared for Meghan.' However, on Wednesday, Hirsch revealed that the Duchess of Sussex has responded to her concerns with a handwritten letter. The podcaster shared a picture of the letter on Instagram, dated March 2025, from the royal. 'Dear Amanda, I heard you are feeling scared,' the note reads. 'Don't be. This is the fun part — let's enjoy it.' Meghan signed the note with the phrase 'As Ever,' which is the name of her new lifestyle brand, and her first name. Amanda Hirsh, who host the 'Not Skinny But Not Fat' podcast shared a photo of the letter from Meghan Markle on Instagram (notskinnybutnotfat / Instagram). Hirsch was stunned by the note, captioning her post: 'OH MY DUCHESS.' She reiterated her excitement about the letter on her Instagram Story, saying she was 'obviously framing' it and that she was 'beyond shook.' 'Beyond spiraling,' Hirsh continued. 'Did I smell the paper? Yes! Do I want my own monogram? Yes. Am I absolutely flabbergasted and obsessed. YES.' She then tagged Meghan's Instagram account, telling the duchess she had 'a fan for life.' A source has confirmed to The Independent that Meghan sent the letter to Hirsch. On March 4, Netflix aired the first season of With Love, Meghan, which featured famous guests and friends of Meghan in each episode as she offered her best hosting, gardening, and cooking tips. The program was filmed at an estate near her home in Montecito, where she lives with her husband Prince Harry, and their two children: Archie, five, and Lilibet, three. However, the program received some scathing reviews, with The Independent's Katie Rosseinsky calling it 'queasy and exhausting.' 'The only tea that is being spilled here is brewed with fresh mint picked from Meghan's garden, or an allergy-busting concoction containing turmeric and cayenne pepper that she blends up for Martin,' she wrote, giving the show one star out of five. On Monday, Jimmy Fallon even mocked a viral moment in Meghan's show when she transferred pretzels from one plastic bag to a personalised one for a guest to enjoy. While playing the 'Trivia Night' segment on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the host's sidekick Steve Higgins asked: 'What is the number one question that mystifies scientists?' Fallon responded: 'Is there life on another planet?' Higgins told Fallon he was incorrect, revealing the answer, 'Why does Meghan Markle make her own pretzel bags? They don't know why.' 'That's interesting,' Fallon said, laughing. 'She takes it from one bag and puts it in another bag, and that confuses people.' Amid the jokes and criticism, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos defended the Duchess in an interview with Variety on Wednesday. 'We're a passive partner in Meghan's company, and it's a big discovery model for us right now,' he said. When asked what motivated him to 'bet' on Meghan, Sarandos said: 'I think Meghan is underestimated in terms of her influence on culture. When we dropped the trailer for the Harry & Meghan doc series (in 2022), everything on-screen was dissected in the press for days.' '... People are fascinated with Meghan Markle. She and Harry are overly dismissed.' Netflix struck a $100 million partnership with Harry and Meghan five years ago, producing several projects of theirs including Harry & Meghan (the docuseries), Polo, and Heart of Invictus. The second season of With Love, Meghan is coming out in the fall and has already finished filming.

Jimmy Fallon mocks Meghan Markle over moment in Netflix show that ‘mystifies scientists'

Jimmy Fallon mocked Meghan Markle for a viral moment in her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. During Monday's episode of The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, the talk show host made fun of the scene in which the Duchess of Sussex moves pre-packaged pretzels from one plastic bag to a smaller, personalized one for her guest. While playing the 'Trivia Night' segment, Fallon's sidekick Steve Higgins asked: 'What is the number one question that mystifies scientists?' Fallon responded: 'Is there life on another planet?' 'Ooh, no,' Higgins said before revealing the answer: 'Why does Meghan Markle make her own pretzel bags? They don't know why.' Fallon laughed before recalling: 'That's interesting. She takes it from one bag and puts it in another bag, and that confuses people.' In the first episode of Meghan's show, she opens a bag of supermarket peanut butter-filled pretzels and transfers them to her own plastic bag. She then ties a white string around the bag and adds a brown label reading: 'Peanut Butter Pretzels.' 'This, we're just going to put in a different bag,' she said while holding the container of store-bought pretzels. 'I know that Daniel loves peanut butter but I'm going to label this anyway, you always want to be conscious if someone has a nut allergy,' she added, referring to her guest and make-up artist, Daniel Martin. The moment quickly went viral on social media with viewers mocking the royal. 'I'm so glad Meghan Markle has a new show on Netflix where I can watch her take pretzels out of a labeled bag and put them into a new bag…then label it. The people's Martha Stewart!' one person wrote on X. ''I have seen hostage videos with more entertainment,' I announced to my husband after Markle poured store-bought pretzels into a canister and tied a bow around it,' another person quipped. On March 4, Netflix released Meghan's highly anticipated show, which sees her sharing hosting and cooking tips with a range of celebrity guests including Mindy Kaling. However, the program received some scathing reviews, with The Independent 's Katie Rosseinsky calling it 'queasy and exhausting.' 'The only tea that is being spilled here is brewed with fresh mint picked from Meghan's garden, or an allergy-busting concoction containing turmeric and cayenne pepper that she blends up for Martin,' she wrote, giving the show one star out of five. She concluded: 'The heady blend of aesthetic curation, inspiring truisms and those inescapable edible flowers might well leave you feeling a bit queasy — or simply worn out at the prospect of having to adequately perform gratitude for all the thoughtful touches involved in Meghan's 'guest experience.'' However, With Love, Meghan director Michael Steed has since defended the program and its cooking sequences, saying he was impressed by the duchesses' culinary skills. 'Her cooking is pretty spot-on,' he said during an interview with People earlier this month. 'She's not a chef, and it's definitely not meant to make it seem like she is, but there's just a love of cooking that is palpable.' Despite the negative reactions to her show, Meghan has already filmed a second season, which is set to arrive on Netflix this fall. Steed will also be returning to the program as the director.

Day three of Auburn Correctional Facility employees joining statewide strike

AUBURN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)—The corrections officers' strike has gone on its third day, with officers and sergeants standing firm and striving for better safety and protections for officers inside prisons across the state. Corrections officers strike for second day: Demanding for safer conditions in prisons Strikers have yet to hear a final agreement from lawmakers so they can return to their duties without being afraid of leaving their jobs assaulted by inmates. NewsChannel 9 spoke with the same anonymous striker from the second day of striking, who was in the identical spot and promised to stand for as long as it takes until the demands that employees voiced to lawmakers are met. Day three of Auburn Correctional Facility employees joining statewide strike Your Stories Q&A: Why do I keep getting unwanted calls when I'm on the 'Do Not Call' list? Will you be able to buy wine in New York State grocery stores soon? Syracuse Crunch and Syracuse Trivia Company hosting Trivia Night Feb. 22 People of Palermo in need of help digging themselves out of heavy snowfall Strikers told NewsChannel 9 during their strike that when they were towards the end of their day-long strike on Wednesday, around 6 p.m. National Guard Trucks drove past the strike, pulling their vehicles into the Auburn Correctional Facility to assist inside of the facility while its regular crew was outside protesting across the street. Gov. Hochul prompted the deployment to help prisons maintain operations inside correctional facilities. Auburn currently receives over 150 National Guard Troop members, which run basic operations such as giving inmates medications and meals and allowing them to take showers, which the anonymous striker believes is 'what they're entitled to have.' The anonymous striker said that despite other reports, there are no signs of trouble between inmates and troops inside facilities. 'Belief that there is an uprise in these medium-security prisons that they're losing the compound only to find out that there is no uprising, there is no riot, and they're secured in their housing dorms,' the striker told NewsChannel 9, who said he retrieved this information from Cert Team friends that confirmed this information with him. However, The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association has raised new concerns, claiming that officers currently assigned to medium-security prisons like Riverview in St. Lawrence County have left their posts, leaving inmates with unsupervised access inside the dorms. 'We all don't want to be out here we're freezing, but we're doing it for the right reasons, and we want to go back to work, and the only way we're going to go back to work is if a proper deal gets done,' the anonymous striker said.
