CT teenager accused of going double the speed limit to elude state trooper

A teenager was arrested Thursday and accused of taking off from a state trooper who tried pulling him over last week in Barkhamsted, allegedly going more than 90 mph and passing other drivers during his escape. Jack Reynolds, 19, of Barkhamstead was taken into custody around 7:30 a.m. by troopers with the Troop B barracks in North Canaan, according to Connecticut State Police. Police had a warrant out for his arrest stemming from an attempted traffic stop on May 21 around 6:30 p.m. A state trooper was headed west on Route 318 when he noticed the driver of a silver BMW sedan heading in the opposite direction allegedly going very fast, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. The trooper turned around and flipped on his lights and siren, but the BMW driver continued east and allegedly began accelerating, the warrant affidavit said. The trooper was able to get the vehicle's license plate information and followed the driver for about a mile, according to the warrant affidavit. He went as fast as 90 mph, but the BMW driver was still allegedly pulling away, the warrant affidavit said. The road in that area is a 45 mph zone. The trooper eventually called off the traffic stop and allegedly saw the BMW driver pass other motorists in a no passing zone, narrowly avoiding a crash, according to the warrant affidavit. The license plate information showed that the vehicle was a 2000 BMW 323i. The registration was canceled and showed that the vehicle last belonged to a Meriden resident, according to the warrant affidavit. When investigators contacted the man he said he had sold the BMW to Reynolds on May 7, the warrant affidavit said. He also alleged that Reynolds stole his registration from his garage before leaving during the sale, state police wrote. State police went to Reynolds' home and found the BMW in the garage, the warrant affidavit said. Despite several lights on inside, no one answered the door when a trooper knocked multiple times. State police found that Reynolds' license is suspended and that he is on probation, the warrant affidavit said. He is also required to register with the state's Deadly Weapon Offender Registry Unit, state police wrote. Authorities obtained a warrant for Reynolds' arrest on charges of reckless driving, first-degree reckless endangerment, disobeying the signal of an officer, engaging police in a pursuit, unsafe passing, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension. He is free on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Torrington Superior Court on June 13.

Ceremony set to rename Carpenter Flats Bridge after late trooper

PERU — A ceremony to rename the Carpenter Flats Bridge after late New York state Trooper Christopher J. Garrow is taking place May 30. The New York State Police said the dedication ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at Heyworth Mason Park at Mason Hill Road, located on US Route 9 in the town of Peru. The bridge will be renamed the 'Captain Christopher J. Garrow Memorial Bridge.' Garrow was born and raised in Peru and graduated from Peru High School in 1994. Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps in July of that same year. Following his service in the Marine Corps, he attended Clinton Community College and earned an associate degree in Humanities. Garrow joined the New York State Police on Oct. 30, 2000, as a member of the 184th Academy Basic School. After successfully graduating from the Academy on May 15, 2001, he began his career as a trooper in Plattsburgh. His passion for the job and commitment to excellence led him to take on various roles, including Marine Operator, Firearms Instructor, member of the State Police Underwater Rescue Team, and Field Training Officer. Throughout his career, he advanced through the ranks, serving as Sergeant, Station Commander, Zone Sergeant, Lieutenant, and most recently, Captain. He was recognized as a distinguished pistol expert and received a Superintendent's Commendation award, as well as a 911 First Responder award. Captain Garrow served as a dedicated member of the New York State Police for 23 years. He passed away on June 12, 2023, at the age of 47, after a courageous battle with an illness related to his work at the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Without hesitation, Garrow bravely answered the call to participate in the search and recovery efforts. 'Captain Garrow was a brave and selfless public servant who devoted himself to protecting others,' state police said in a news release. 'His dedication to duty and ultimate sacrifice serve as a reminder of the dangers faced by our law enforcement officers every day. He was not only a Captain in the State Police but also a loving husband, a father to two daughters, and a cherished member of the community. To Captain Garrow's family, we extend our deepest gratitude and respect.' Troop B Commander Major Brent M. Davison, along with the members of Troop B, are honored to recognize the ultimate sacrifice made by Captain Garrow, who dedicated his life and service to the people of New York State. The State Police will be joined by Captain Garrow's family, as well as several local and state officials who contributed to making this dedication possible, including State Sen. Dan Stec and Assemblyman Billy Jones. 'Captain Christopher J. Garrow was a hero who answered the call when our nation needed him. Renaming this bridge in his home community is a small way to honor his service and sacrifice, and ensure his name lives on forever,' Stec said. 'Renaming this bridge is just one way the community can show their appreciation for Captain Christopher J. Garrow and his incredible dedication to the North Country community and his country,' Jones said. 'A Marine Corps veteran and dedicated New York State Police member for over two decades, Captain Garrow was an inspirational community leader who embodied the strength and character we should all strive to replicate. I am proud to be part of the efforts to spearhead the legislation to dedicate this bridge in his memory – I cannot think of someone who is more worthy of this recognition.'

Pair of NNY troopers honored by State Police

ALBANY, N.Y. (WWTI) – A pair of north country New York State troopers were honored at the 49th New York State Police Awards Day Ceremony. The event held at the New York State Police Academy in Albany paid tribute to the courage and perseverance of agency sworn and non-sworn members. 176 new Troopers graduate from NYS Police School According to NY State Police Superintendent Steven G. James, a total of 32 individuals and one unit were recognized for their contributions. Here are the north country personnel that received honors: Investigator Connor G. Sutton – CTIU North (Troop B) On August 10, 2023, Investigator Sutton (then Trooper Sutton) and K9 Skiff assisted the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's task force in locating a fugitive and a missing person in the town of Russell. The suspect, wanted for shooting his fiancée and failing to appear in court, had been evading capture for weeks and was believed to be armed and dangerous. While searching the area, Sutton and K9 Skiff located the suspect hiding in an elevated position, armed with a rifle and shotgun, and prepared to ambush officers. After verbal commands were ignored, Sutton deployed K9 Skiff, who engaged the suspect. The suspect fired at law enforcement, and Sutton returned fire, fatally striking him and ending the threat. The missing person was located unharmed. Investigator Sutton's decisive actions and the bravery of K9 Skiff prevented a deadly ambush and likely saved the lives of fellow officers. Sutton earned the Brummer Award, which is the highest award for heroism. Authorities were searching for fugitive Shawn Sheridan in a wooded area in the town of Russell near the Donnerville Road. Investigator James T. Egan Jr. – Troop B On May 16, 2024, while on patrol in the town of Moira, Franklin County, Trooper Egan observed an out-of-control Amish wagon speeding through intersections with only a 4-year-old child inside. Recognizing the imminent danger, Trooper Egan made multiple attempts to stop the runaway horse using his Division vehicle. As the wagon slowed in a grassy area, Trooper Egan exited his vehicle, leapt for the reins, and successfully stopped the horse—sustaining injury in the process when he was pinned between the wagon and a tree. Despite being in great pain, he safely removed the child from the wagon. Trooper Egan's courageous and selfless actions undoubtedly saved a young life and exemplify the highest standards of the New York State Police. Egan received the Superintendent's Commendation Award for his efforts. The entire list of honorees can be found here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
