Pennsylvania man dies after UTV falls through ice on Deep Creek Lake

MCHENRY — A Pennsylvania man injured Saturday when the utility task vehicle he was in broke through ice on Deep Creek Lake has died. Maryland Natural Resources Police said David Theodore Linsenbigler, 58, of Greensburg, died Sunday at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia. Linsenbigler was a passenger in the vehicle that fell through the ice around 5:30 p.m. near the Glendale Road Bridge. He was found submerged in the vehicle and, once rescued, flown to the Morgantown hospital by Cumberland-based Maryland State Police medevac Trooper 5. The operator, a 59-year-old man, was out of the water when first responders arrived. He was transported to Garrett Regional Medical Center for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. 'We remind individuals to use extreme caution when operating on the frozen lake surface within the Deep Creek Lake Natural Resources Management Area,' NRP said in a statement. The lake surface may only be used by registered snowmobiles, NRP said. UTVs/ATVs may not legally operate on the frozen lake surface. 'Operators should carefully evaluate ice conditions, especially in the area of bridge crossings where road salt and other debris can cause fluctuations in ice thickness,' NRP said. In addition to NRP officers, Garrett County Emergency Services, the Garrett County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police and several area volunteer fire departments assisted at the scene. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call NRP investigators at 410-260-8888.
