Redland Middle School crowned winner of MCDOT's ‘Paint the Plow' contest
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. () — The wait is over, and a middle school in Derwood was named the winner of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation's (MCDOT) 'Paint the Plow' contest. On Wednesday, the department announced that Redland Middle School was selected as the first-place winner. The winning design, 'Life is a Highway,' illustrated a Ride On bus and a highway worker on Sam Eig Highway. 'The Paint the Plow competition is a beloved annual tradition that engages students in recognizing the valuable contributions of our public works employees. I look forward to seeing the plows in action during the winter months as a tribute to the men and women who keep our County running.' The contest is held each year as part of the 'Public Works Week,' to honor essential workers. The special week highlights the employees of its Division of Highway Services, public works employees, and the vital role they play in safety and quality of life for residents. The contest featured 11 county middle schools. The art pieces were displayed at the department's 'Truck Day,' where over 2,600 people voted. Here is a list of the winners: First place and awarded $500: Redland Middle School in Derwood for its decorated snowplow with a transportation theme named 'Life is a Highway.' Second place and awarded $300: Hallie Wells Middle School in Clarksburg for its decorated snowplow with a 'Heroes of Public Works' theme named 'Plow!' Third place and awarded $200: Julius West Middle School in Rockville for its decorated snowplow with a Minions theme named 'Snow Ready for Summer.' 'I want to thank our MCPS students for helping us celebrate our public works employees,' said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. 'I was impressed by the creativity and talent of these students and their efforts to raise awareness of the unseen but vital role our employees play in our community.' Special Olympics RI Summer Games begin Friday
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Special Olympians from around Rhode Island will show off their skills this coming weekend as they compete in the annual Summer Games. This year's games will be held May 30-31 at URI's Kingston campus and June 1 at St. George's School in Middletown. It's Special Olympics Rhode Island's biggest sporting event of the year. Wednesday was 'Truck Day,' the unofficial start of the Summer Games. A trailer loaded up with equipment and supplies left the Special Olympics RI headquarters in Smithfield and was escorted by police down to URI. The Torch Run ceremony at the R.I. State House starts at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 30, followed by the Opening Ceremony at Meade Stadium at 7 p.m. However, competition begins earlier in the day with bowling at 10 a.m. Other events include track and field, soccer, powerlifting and swimming. Red Sox pitchers and catchers start spring training Wednesday
FORT MYERS, FL (WWLP)– Spring training for the Boston Red Sox gets underway on Wednesday. The team's pitchers and catchers will have their first workouts at Fenway South, the club's Spring Training and Player Development Complex in Fort Myers. Red Sox readying for 2025 season with 'Truck Day' The team's first full-squad workout is scheduled for Monday, February 17. The Red Sox are expected to have 60 players in camp (including 20 non-roster invitees), with six infielders and six outfielders joining the pitchers and catchers. Fans are invited to attend the workouts, which are free and open to the public starting at 9:30 am. All practices from February 12-20 will take place at the Fenway South Player Development Complex, located at 11500 Fenway South Drive in Fort Myers. Tours of Jet Blue Park are being offered seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., through March 23, except for February 14-16. Tickets for tours cost $10 per person, with children 12 and under able to enter for free. Game day VIP tour packages are also available and cost $40 per person and $15 for children 12 and under. These tours are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and must be prearranged in advance by calling 239-226-4772. Additionally, concessions and the Red Sox team store will be open beginning on February 21, when spring training games begin with a matchup against the Northeastern University Huskies. JetBlue Park is accepting only digital forms of payment this season. Tickets to 2025 Spring Training games are available online at as well as at the JetBlue Park Box Office daily from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. Mastercard is the preferred payment of the Boston Red Sox.
