I tested 5 viral foundations in the gym to see which were ‘sweaty summer proof' – an £11 buy was a winner
Including a high-street foundation that will leave you looking like a glazed doughnut YOU GLOW GIRL I tested 5 viral foundations in the gym to see which were 'sweaty summer proof' – an £11 buy was a winner Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WHILE there is no better feeling than enjoying glorious sunshine on your skin - with SPF, of course - beauty buffs absolutely despise the hotter days when the foundation slides and melts off in an instant. While some prefer to go bare-faced or rock a tinted moisturiser, if you're a fake tan fanatic like me, you'll know that's not really an option - as the lighter tints won't match the rest of your Oompa Loompa complexion. 12 From the cult favourite True Match to an e.l.f. foundation, I put five viral beauty buys to the test to see which one would survive a sweaty gym session Credit: Boots 12 While one left me looking patchy, other stayed intact Credit: Superdrug So, to find out which budget-friendly foundations are summer sweat-proof, I tried out five viral make-up buys, all £15 or under. To see which foundations would perform the best in sweltering temperatures, I put them under the ultimate test - my two-hour long gym sessions, which included both weightlifting and cardio. In order to give them a fair chance, I followed the exact same beauty routine with each - beginning with hyaluronic acid, a serum, moisturiser, sunscreen, and topping the foundation off with a bit of powder. Here are the ones that stayed intact - and the ones that left random patches on my face. L'Oreal Infaillible 32h Fresh Wear, £13.99 12 The lightweight foundation left my face glowing - but will it last at the gym? Scroll down to see Credit: supplied/kate kulniece This red-lidded foundation has been around for a years now, and pulls in rave 4.3-star ratings. Formulated with Vitamin C, L'Oreal Infaillable Fresh Wear foundation offers full coverage yet feels lightweight on your skin - it's really a win-win. The best part? I also found that you don't need to apply heaps to achieve the results you're after - so a little goes a long way. I wore this SPF 25 foundation on a Monday - which are my heavy leg days in a gym where air conditioning doesn't seem to be a thing, and decided to torture myself even more by hopping onto the stair master for a further 20 minutes. As I was contemplating this poor decision (amongst many others), I felt the sweat dripping on my forehead and feared I was looking like a hot, patchy mess. But to my surprise, once I took a quick look at the reflection on the mirror, the foundation was still there - although there were some slight patches around my nose and just underneath my hairline. I'm a fake tan pro and have tested all of them - a £22.99 option left me GREEN, but a £3.49 bargain is always a 10/10 Sweatproof rating: 4/5 12 My face after two long hours at the gym and 20 minutes on the stair master Credit: supplied/kate kulniece L'Oreal True Match, £11.99 12 Although this may not be the perfect shade match, I loved how even and glowy my face looked Credit: supplied/kate kulniece L'Oreal True Match - available at Boots for just £11.99 - has been around for as long as I can remember. Now available in a whopping 48 shades, this high street number provides perfect, natural and true-to-skin coverage. Not only is it enriched with hyaluronic acid that provides up to 24-hour hydration, the foundation also has bold claims to ''improve skin quality in two weeks''. While I wasn't able to test out the latter, I sure can tell you that the wallet-friendly foundation is gym girl-approved. I put it to test on one of the hottest days the UK has seen this year and was shocked to see that not even 40 minutes of intense cardio could smudge it, even a little. After I got home following the treadmill torture, the sweat had dried up - and the overall complexion looked almost as good as it had before the gym session, apart from the slight patch under my eyes. Halo Glow Liquid Filter, £15 12 e.l.f's Liquid Filter was shiny - but surprisingly sweat proof Credit: supplied/kate kulniece One of the more affordable brands on the high-street, e.l.f. has truly surprised me as of late, whether it's their brow pencil or liquid contour. So when I spotted e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter on the shelves I snapped it up without much hesitation - especially after reading the thousands of rave reviews. Although this is theoretically not a foundation, it can be worn as make-up and I found that with a few layers you can achieve the desired level of coverage. However, do be warned - you will be left looking like a glazed doughnut and it's best to have your go-to powder at the ready. Fabulous' £10 Fake Tan Test FINDING the perfect fake tan isn't easy. " bBold Dream Mousse Tan in Dark - £9.50 - Buy Now Tester: Josie O'Brien, Senior Fabulous Digital Writer Review: "The first thing that hit me about this tan was the 'juicy watermelon' scent - it's delicious. I was left with a natural bronze hue rather than orange glow. My only qualm is that the tan seemed to stick to my dry patches and accentuated 'strawberry skin' on my legs. I'm still adding this tan to my arsenal though - the smell, colour and texture are dreamy." St Moriz Professional Medium Tanning Mousse - £4.99 - Buy Now Tester: Kate Kulniece, Fabulous Writer Review: "Not only does St. Moriz mousse leave you with a gorgeous bronzed glow, but it also smells fabulous - think Piña Colada on a sunny beach. At first, I was a little bit sceptical cause I'm a gradual fake tan girlie, but this quick developing St. Moriz number may change it all." While I may have looked more shiny than I like to, this foundation hybrid didn't feel too cakey - and best of all, got me heaps of compliments at the gym. I wore the £15 beauty bag must-have in sweltering 29C heat - and not only did it survive the muggy weather but also an intense lower body session, followed by 30 minutes on the stairmaster and some skipping. While I quite enjoyed this product - which can even be used a highlighter - it's currently available in just 12 shades, only four or which are suited for darker complexions. Credit: supplied/kate kulniece Whether it's their Sky High mascara or cheap lippies, Maybelline has been a firm staple in my make-up bag ever since I got into beauty as a teenager. As someone who has an oily skin, I was a little hesitant trying Maybelline Super Stay 24H Foundation as Vitamin C products usually offer more glowy results - but much to my surprise, it gave me a natural radiance. This make-up buy, priced at £13.99 at Superdrug, is great if you're a vegan like me, as it contains no animal-derived ingredients or by-products. Right after applying it on my face, I was amazed at the healthy glow and how smooth my mega pores looked. However, the biggest winner is that the foundation lived up to its promises - and resisted the intense workout and the mini treadmill run I did at the gym. While there was a teeny bit of creasing under my eyes, the purse-friendly foundation stayed intact and almost glued to my face - a real winner if you've got a sunny holiday coming up or if you're a cardio bunny. Sweatproof rating: 5/5 12 There was a teeny bit of creasing - but otherwise I was impressed Credit: supplied/kate kulniece Rimmel Lasting Finish 35 Hour Foundation, £10.99 12 Rimmel's foundation promises to last 35 hours - but is it sweat proof? Credit: supplied/kate kulniece Available in more than 30 shades, Rimmel Lasting Finish 35 Hour Foundation is one of the cheapest on the high street, setting you back just £10.99 at Boots. This full-coverage beauty bag buy has a natural-looking finish with SPF20 - which is always an added bonus if you've run out of sunscreen. The cruelty-free and vegan formula also boasts hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and 2% niacinamide, so not only will your skin be red carpet-ready - you'll also treat it with a whole lot of goodness. Although I found the make-up buy on the thicker side, the end finish was pretty natural - but you can always go heavier to achieve a fuller coverage. More than an hour of weight-lifting and 30 minutes of cardio later, the foundation had survived and my skin looked just as flawless as it did at the start of the session - despite the excessive sweating. Sweatproof rating: 5/5

The best drugstore foundation for mature skin that won't settle into fine lines
We independently evaluate the products we review. When you buy via links on our site, we may receive compensation. Read more about how we vet products and deals . Selling for under $10, L'oreal's True Match exceeded all of our makeup expectations, which is why we named it best drugstore foundation of the year. (Amazon) I'll be honest. I used to think you had to sacrifice something — like shade range, coverage or staying power — in order to use even the best drugstore foundation. But over the years, I've learned that these more affordable makeup gems can hold their own against the priciest prestige formulas. Because here's the truth that no bougie beauty brand will ever admit: You don't need to spend half your paycheck to get a foundation that works for your skin. Yes, once you hit your 40s — as skin becomes drier, more textured and peppered with fine lines — your foundation needs change. But there are loads of drugstore formulas that are up to this challenge, options that are packed with skin-loving ingredients, come in inclusive shade ranges and last just as long as (if not longer than) their fancy-pants counterparts. These days, while I still keep plenty of pricier foundations on my favorites list (like my precious La Mer), after testing dozens of drugstore products, I'm here to say that you absolutely do not need to drop $50 or more to achieve a flawless complexion. The best drugstore foundations for mature skin will deliver exactly what you want for your face — namely, natural-looking coverage — and very little of what you don't. For this very important quest, I did what any beauty editor with a lifelong CVS-cosmetics-aisle obsession would: I tested the best of the best drugstore foundations currently on the market and found the three that I believe are top tier. And, because I'm in my 40s with skin that's drier, more sensitive and way pickier than it used to be (thanks, menopause), you better believe my top choices passed the 'does it settle into fine lines?' test. Whether you're a matte finish fan, a powder foundation purist or a dewy-skin enthusiast, there's something here for you — all without a high-end price tag. A sample of the drugstore foundations during the testing phase. Table of Contents The best drugstore foundations of 2025 How we rested drugstore foundations Other drugstore foundations that didn't make the cut What to look for in a drugstore foundation Drugstore foundation FAQ The best drugstore foundation for mature skin L'OREAL PARIS Best overall drugstore foundation L'Oreal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Foundation Coverage: Medium | Type: Liquid | Finish: Natural | Shades: 47 | Size: 1 oz In the past few years, drugstore foundations have seriously upped their game, and L'Oréal True Match is proof. This foundation has been beloved forever, and the current iteration is the best the product has ever been: It blended like a dream on my combination-oily-slash-menopausal-dry skin. It also offers 47 shades to accommodate a wide range of skin tones. The formula is oil-free, making it great for those who want a lightweight base that won't clog pores. It adapts well to different skin types, so whether you're dry, oily or somewhere in between, True Match will get the job done. Pros Excellent shade range Non-comedogenic Formulated without alcohol, oils or fragrance Hydrates skin Ultra blendable Cons Some found the formula too liquid-y Some users complain the coverage is not long-lasting $10 at Amazon Explore More Buying Options $10 at Walmart$14 at Ulta Beauty Other drugstore foundations for mature skin we love NYX PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP Best full-coverage foundation NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation Coverage: Full | Type: Liquid | Finish: Matte | Shades: 45 | Size: 1.0 fl oz (30 mL) I may not be as devoted to matte foundations as I was in my 20s and early 30s, but sometimes you need makeup that absolutely won't budge. Enter NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop, the full-coverage workhorse I reach for when I want to cover old acne scars, get through a long event or just want my face to stay in place through a heatwave (or a hot flash). This formula is oil-free, waterproof, and gives you a matte finish without that dreaded cakey look. On days when I do feel extra dry, I make sure to prep my face beforehand with a good moisturizer and hydrating primer. One caveat: This product is quick-drying and sets fast, so you have be quick with your brush or, even better, a damp makeup sponge. Once this product on, though, it's on — during testing, mine lasted an entire 9-hour work day. The 45-shade range is also super impressive, especially at this price point. Pros Effectively hides blemishes, redness and discoloration Ideal for those with oily and combination skin Transfer-resistant, waterproof formula Long lasting Cons Matte formula may accentuate dry patches or fine lines Quick-drying, so you have to apply and blend quickly $9 at Amazon Explore More Buying Options $13 at Macy's$15 at Ulta Beauty MAYBELLINE Best powder drugstore foundation Maybelline Super Stay Hybrid Powder-Foundation Coverage: Medium to full | Type: Hybrid Powder | Finish: Matte | Shades: 16 | Size: 0.21 oz (6 g) When I was a kid and first getting into makeup, I was devoted to my powder compact. But these days, I don't always set my foundation with makeup. So, this powder foundation surprised me — in the best way. The hybrid formula acts like a liquid in powder form, which means you get full coverage and a soft matte finish that doesn't cling to every fine line on your face and a texture that feels like velvet to the touch. This version lends medium-to-full coverage, depending on how you apply it (I usually use a fluffy brush for lighter days and a sponge when I want more). What I love most is that the product really lasts. I've worn it the whole day and didn't need a single touch-up by dinnertime. While the shade range could be better (16 options), the performance makes this one a true under-$15 steal. Maybe I'm becoming a powder foundation gal! Pros Soft matte finish helps control oil and shine throughout the day Lasts long, sweat-resistant and water-resistant Great for touch-ups, on-the-go and travel Pleasing velvet-y texture Cons Limited shade range (16 options) May emphasize dryness or texture on dehydrated skin (use a primer!) $6 at Amazon How we tested drugstore foundations I talked to makeup artists, scrolled Reddit threads and, finally, did my research just like I did for our other best foundation roundups: by testing every drugstore formula I could find. I worked my way through at least a dozen different foundations, from medium-to-full coverage liquids to powders and more sheer skin tints. I swatched, blended and wore picks from Maybelline to Milani—and just about every brand in between. I scored each formula based on shade range, texture, finish, coverage (could it conceal my dark spots and acne scars?), ingredient list, scent and, of course, longevity. I also made sure to test each foundation in a variety of real-life conditions — while walking my dog on a warm day or working indoors in the AC and during days spent running errands or attending events. Swatching some of the foundations before actual shade matching. Other drugstore foundations we tried that didn't make the cut There were a few drugstore foundations that almost made our list, but, given the criteria above, didn't quite earn a top spot. (That doesn't mean they're bad!) One that came close was Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Liquid Foundation. While I liked the way this medium-coverage, antioxidant-filled formula felt on my skin (it's a favorite of Bethenny Frankel's), I did not love the fact that it's pump-free, making the application messy. I also appreciated how the CoverGirl + OLAY Simply Ageless 3-in-1 Liquid Foundation is packed with skin-nourishing ingredients, like hyaluronic acidand vitamin C, but the fragrance was a little too strong for my taste. What to look for in a drugstore foundation Coverage: Once upon a time, I wanted coverage so full you could see it from space. But these days, I look for buildable formulas that let me decide how much pigment I want and won't settle into my fine lines by lunchtime. Whether you're still in your full-glam era or leaning into skinimalism, look for foundations with hydrating, flexible textures. Bonus points if they have skin-loving ingredients like peptides or niacinamide. Shade Range: Let's be real: Shade matching gets even trickier as we age, especially as sun spots, melasma, or redness enter the chat. (My arms have been tanner than my face since birth, so I've been dealing with this for years.) A wide shade range that includes cool, neutral and warm undertones is essential. Some drugstore brands have seriously stepped it up in this department, but others still need to catch up. Skin Type: Mature skin tends to lean drier, so you want a foundation that hydrates without feeling greasy. If you're oily in certain spots, a natural or satin finish is your best bet. Fully dry? Look for formulas with hyaluronic acid or squalane. And no matter what your skin type, fragrance-free is your friend if you're sensitive or prone to irritation. Budget: Like I've mentioned, drugstore foundations really have come a long way. This list is clearly proof of it! You can get natural-looking coverage and solid wear time for under $20 — many of these products clearly outperform their luxury counterparts. Save your coins for that overpriced serum instead. Drugstore foundation FAQ How do I find the right shade for mature skin? Know what your undertone is (cool, warm or neutral), and always test foundation in natural light and on your jawline. You're going to want to look for a shade that blends seamlessly into your face and neck. What finish is best for mature skin? Dewy and satin finishes are generally the most flattering, as they give skin a plump, radiant look. Super matte formulas can settle into lines and make skin look flat or dry, but skin prep (more on that below) can go a long way. How can I keep foundation from settling into fine lines? Hydration is key, so start with a nourishing moisturizer and a hydrating primer. Let each product fully absorb before layering on foundation. Use a damp sponge to press product into the skin, rather than swiping or dragging and avoid over-powdering. Do I really need primer and setting spray? Not always, but for longer days, both can help! A good primer smooths texture, and setting sprays can melt everything together for a more natural, second-skin finish. Look for formulas designed for mature or dry skin (they're usually more forgiving). If you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem.
