China's Fan Zhendong signs Bundesliga deal, official calls it ‘huge moment for table tennis'

Chinese star Fan Zhendong is set to return to action at club level after signing for German outfit 1. FC Saarbrücken to play in the Table Tennis Bundesliga. In a statement released on the club's website on Sunday, Fan said he could not wait for the new season to start. The Olympic champion, who has withdrawn from International Table Tennis Federation events in a row over rankings, has largely been out of action since winning gold in Paris last summer, playing only in national championships and the Chinese Table Tennis Super League. 'I'm really looking forward to the new challenge in Saarbrucken and in the TTBL,' Fan told his new club's website. 'I'm really excited to be part of this club, get to know a new environment – and celebrate many successes together with the team.' Nicolas Barrois, the Saarbruken general manager, said bringing the three-time Olympic gold medallist to the club, who finished third in the TTBL last season, was an unbelievable opportunity. Sweden's Truls Moregard is also part of the Saarbrucken team. Photo: AFP 'It happened so fast, so much so that we still find it difficult to believe it 100 per cent, but it's real,' he said. 'It wasn't just a milestone in terms of competition, it's also a huge moment for our club and table tennis in Germany and Europe.'

Red alert: Bright tables have table tennis players squinting at world champs

World table tennis championships in Doha. Photo: AFP Table tennis players are seeing red as the bright tables at the world Championships have left them squinting, grumbling and even reaching for sunglasses. While tables in the fast-paced sport are usually blue, dark green or black, the ones at the ongoing World Table Tennis Championships in Doha are red - and many players are not happy about it. "It gets very unusual at times. If the light shines on the table, you get a very dazzling effect, where you might lose sight of the ball. Which is... yeah, very unusual, really," Norwegian player Borgar Haug told state broadcaster NRK earlier this week. "There were some funny ones in the training hall who started wearing sunglasses when they played, because it got so bright," Haug added. His concerns were echoed by other players, who are also struggling to adapt to the colour. "I have never played on red tables - no one has," Swedish player Truls Moregard told the news agency TT. The finals in the Qatari capital will take place on 25 May. - Reuters

The 23-year-old, who won two silver medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was struck on the left hand when a drone filming his training collided with a lamp and came crashing down. "It's okay now, but the drone hit badly and broke half the nail. It bled a lot and throbbed painfully. I think that was what made me so stressed," Moregard told Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Moregard, who plays right-handed, said the accident in his home town of Eslov did not affect his preparations for the World Championship in Doha starting on May 17.
