Scammer sends victim pictures of gun and decapitated head

NEWTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – A Newton Falls Township man reported to the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office that he was threatened on social media in what is believed to be a scam. The man said that someone messaged him on Instagram and wanted to pay him $500 to paint his Instagram profile photo. The man said that the unknown person sent him the money, but then wanted it returned through Cash App, according to a police report. The report did not say how the money was sent to the victim or if any actual money was exchanged. The scammer then emailed the victim images of decapitated heads and two people in ski masks with an AK-47-style rifle and a pistol, the report stated. Police took a report and advised the victim to close his social media accounts, delete his email address and contact his bank. The Federal Trade Commission calls social media a 'golden goose' for scammers. Here are some ways to steer clear of scams on social media: Limit who can see your posts and information on social media. All platforms collect information about you from your activities on social media, but visit your privacy settings to set some restrictions. If you get a message from a friend about an opportunity or an urgent need for money, call them. Their account may have been hacked—especially if they ask you to pay by cryptocurrency, gift card, or wire transfer. That's how scammers ask you to pay. If someone appears on your social media and rushes you to start a friendship or romance, slow down. Read about romance scams. And never send money to someone you haven't met in person. Before you buy, check out the company. Search online for its name plus 'scam' or 'complaint.' Trumbull County Sheriff's Office hosts first Easter egg hunt

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — Easter is just about a week away, and there are many egg hunts happening around the Valley. On Saturday, dozens of families came out for the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office's first Easter egg hunt on the Courthouse Square Lawn. Kids ages 12 and under were hunting for over 4,000 eggs filled with candy to celebrate the holiday. Each family was given a bag to collect their eggs, plus one lucky boy and one girl were chosen to be sheriff for the day. 'We hope to continue this and hope that it grows. We wanted to have community involvement and let the community know we're here for them, and we really enjoy having children's programs,' said Trumbull County Sheriff Michael Wilson. 'I'd like to reach out and let kids know that law enforcement isn't what they see on social media. We're here for the people, we're here for the children. Never be afraid to see a police officer and go up and say hi, and we're here to help them.' Wilson said the Sheriff's Office plans to stay active in the community and continue to help as much as they can. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trumbull County Sheriff's Office training 2 new K9 officers

TRUMBULL CO., Ohio (WKBN) — The Trumbull County Sheriff's Office will soon be adding not one but two new K9 officers to its team thanks to a generous donation to the law enforcement agency. Deputy James Lewis met his new K9 partner Rio for the first time Monday. 'I'm really excited to meet him and hopefully he likes me,' said Deputy Lewis. It's the first day Lewis and Rio started their training alongside Deputy Mike Nelson and his new partner K9 Rex. 'I've always wanted to try this opportunity so I'm glad it's finally happening,' Deputy Nelson said. Thanks to Alpha Pack K9 and the nonprofit Fur Missile K9 Foundation, the K9s and their training were donated to the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office. 'It's a great asset to have and a lot of departments don't have the funding to be able to purchase these K9s. One dog costs roughly $18,500 just for the dog and the training,' said Jennifer Dobbins with Alpha Pack K9. 'With the budget constraints that we have and being able to get donations for a complete two dogs and all the equipment that they need and all the training it's huge and we wouldn't have been able to pull this off without them,' said Trumbull County Sheriff Mike Wilson. Both officers will eventually be dual-purpose K9s trained in tracking, detecting narcotics and suspect apprehension. 'It's a huge asset to the department to be able to locate people, apprehend suspects and remove those illegal substances from the roadway,' said Timothy Dobbins with Apha Pack K9. The K9s and their handlers will undergo at least a month of training before joining K9 Lincoln and his handler Deputy Andre Jarrette on patrol. 'We want to fight the opiate and fentanyl epidemic and what better way than to have two more dogs in Trumbull County,' Wilson said. Sheriff Wilson says the goal is to have one K9 on every shift and to grow the unit to four or five teams. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
