GOP lawmakers praise Trump call with Putin after Biden 'refused to even pick up the phone'
Republican lawmakers hailed President Donald Trump after a nearly two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a peace deal in Ukraine, drawing contrasts between his efforts and those of former President Joe Biden. "I'm encouraged by President Trump's willingness to engage in diplomacy to negotiate peace between Ukraine and Russia — especially after Biden refused to even pick up the phone to try," Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., said of the call. The House Foreign Affairs Committee, in reaction to the discussion, wrote, "President Trump got Vladimir Putin to agree that a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine is necessary," and that "Iran cannot be in a position to destroy Israel." "This is called THE ART OF THE DEAL!" the committee wrote. Ukraine's Zelenskyy Replaces Top Military Official Ahead Of Trump-putin Call Trump spoke with Putin over the phone earlier Tuesday "about the need for peace and a ceasefire in the Ukraine war," according to a readout of the meeting shared by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Read On The Fox News App "This conflict should never have started and should have been ended long ago with sincere and good faith peace efforts. The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace," it continued. "These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East." Democrats, however, remained skeptical about whether Russia would honor a peace deal. "Imagine a robber breaking into your home twice—each time blaming you for the break-in. Would you trust them to stop?" Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo. said. "Vladimir Putin has never kept a promise or honored a deal. Any deal must be fair & enforceable." Trump 'Hopes' Putin Agrees To Ceasefire As Moscow Signals No Truce Yet Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said that "from these readouts, it's clear that Russia remains the obstacle to peace in Europe." "I'm glad to see a halt on infrastructure strikes, but many of Putin's 'requests' like a ban on arms or intel sharing make clear what he is after—a neutered Ukraine that cannot defend itself," Coons wrote. National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes, in a statement shared with Fox News Digital in response to the Democratic lawmakers, said that under Trump, a deal is even closer to being reached. "Just two weeks ago, both Ukraine and Russia were miles apart on a ceasefire agreement, and we are now closer to a deal thanks to the leadership of President Trump," Hughes said. "The goal remains the same: stop the killing and find a peaceful resolution to this conflict." Trump, in a Truth Social post following the call, described the meeting as "very good and productive." "Many elements of a Contract for Peace were discussed, including the fact that thousands of soldiers are being killed, and both President Putin and [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy would like to see it end," Trump wrote in a social media post. "That process is now in full force and effect, and we will, hopefully, for the sake of Humanity, get the job done!" Putin orders partial ceasefire after call with Trump but not the one hoped for
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered his military to adhere to a 30-day ceasefire on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, but he did not extend the temporary truce to the active frontlines or civilian populations. "The blood and treasure that both Ukraine and Russia have been spending in this war would be better spent on the needs of their people," the White House said in a release following the roughly 90-minute call between Putin and President Donald Trump. "The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace." Reports leading up to the call suggested that Trump intended to push Putin to agree to an unconditional ceasefire, as he refused to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy until the latter makes clear that he "wants to make peace." Even If Trump Secures Ukraine-russia Peace Deal, Can Putin Be Trusted? Following the call, Trump posted on Truth Social that, "My phone conversation today with President Putin of Russia was a very good and productive one. We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine," Trump said in a post following the call. "That process is now in full force and effect, and we will, hopefully, for the sake of Humanity, get the job done!" While Ukraine last week agreed to immediately start a ceasefire upon Russia's agreement, Zelenskyy again voiced skepticism Monday night over whether Putin was actually interested in ending the war. Read On The Fox News App "Now, almost a week later, it's clear to everyone in the world – even to those who refused to acknowledge the truth for the past three years – that it is Putin who continues to drag out this war," he said during this Monday night address. Similarly, on Tuesday, a Ukrainian lawmaker, who wished to remain anonymous, pointed out that an agreement to stop hitting Ukraine's energy infrastructure two days before the first day of spring was not necessarily a sign that Putin is interested in peace. What To Expect From The Trump-putin Call On Ukraine War "30-day ceasefire on energy infrastructure when winter is over, really? That's it?" the lawmaker told Fox News Digital, highlighting Russia's three-year winter-time strategy of targeting Ukraine's energy sector. Zelenskyy's office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's questions, and both NATO and EU officials held off on immediately reacting to the day's talks. "The Russian readout is a typical diplomatic talk by the Kremlin, with a lot of fluff in it. The only tangible and significant commitment that Putin has made is to stop the strikes on Ukrainian critical infrastructure," Rebekah Koffler, a former DIA intelligence officer and author of "Putin's Playbook," told Fox News Digital. "The key point, though, is the 'mutual refusal of the parties to the conflict' to strike these facilities. "I don't rule out the possibility that Russia may violate this commitment and claim that Ukrainians did that first," she added. "But at least on the surface it looks positive." Putin also apparently agreed to a 175-prisioner swap with Ukraine, and 23 "seriously wounded" Ukrainian servicemen currently being treated in Russian hospitals will be returned to Ukraine in a "gesture of goodwill," said the Kremlin's readout following the call. The Russian leader also said that following Trump's "appeal to save the lives" of the Ukrainian forces bogged down in the Kursk region, he has been "guided by humanitarian considerations" and will allow for their surrender and provide "decent treatment to the soldiers," which is an existing international law mandated by the United Nations Geneva article source: Putin orders partial ceasefire after call with Trump but not the one hoped for

Trump speaks with Russia's Putin about ending Ukraine war
President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin for at least 90 minutes about ending the war in Ukraine, the White House said. The call, which began at 10 a.m. ET, was "going well," White House spokesman Dan Scavino said at 10:54 a.m. ET. He added at 11:32 a.m. that it was still ongoing. The White House said around 12:52 p.m. that the call was over, though it would not say initially exactly when each side hung up. It comes after Trump said last night that "Many elements of a Final Agreement have been agreed to, but much remains." "Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW. I look very much forward to the call with President Putin," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. What To Expect From The Trump-putin Call On Ukraine War Read On The Fox News App Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that the two leaders would speak about the war in Ukraine but that there are a "large number of questions" regarding normalizing U.S.-Russia relations, according to The Associated Press. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Monday that "the ball is now in Russia's court" to accept a U.S.-proposed ceasefire deal that Ukraine agreed to last week. The U.S.-backed proposal, which includes an immediate 30-day ceasefire and guaranteed resumption of U.S. military aid and intelligence to Ukraine, was finalized during diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia last week. "Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the U.S. proposal to enact an immediate interim 30-day ceasefire to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The ball is now in Russia's court," Bruce said during a State Department briefing. Ukraine's Zelenskyy Replaces Top Military Official Ahead Of Trump-putin Call The last time Trump and Putin spoke was in mid-February. "I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, and various other subjects," Trump said at the time. "We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations, and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II, remembering, that Russia lost tens of millions of people, and we, likewise, lost so many!" Trump continued. "We each talked about the strengths of our respective Nations, and the great benefit that we will someday have in working together. But first, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine," he also said. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates. American detained in Russia released as officials work to set up potential Trump-Putin meeting
A 28-year-old American citizen detained in Russia on drug smuggling charges earlier this month was freed ahead of talks between Washington and Moscow on ending the war in Ukraine. The release of Kalob Byers, of West Virginia, was confirmed by David Kelly, deputy speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates. "He was released and is now at home," Kelly told Fox News of Byers. Byers was released to the U.S. embassy in Moscow late Sunday evening, a U.S. official confirmed to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Read On The Fox News App The 28-year-old was traveling from Istanbul with his Russian fiancée, who was also detained, according to Russian media reports. Authorities accused Byers of attempting to smuggle a "significant amount" of drugs into the country. The charges were punishable with a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, Russia's TASS news agency reported. It wasn't immediately clear whether Byers' fiancée was also released. Russian media reports identified her as Naida Mambetova and said she was placed in pre-trial detention on the same charges. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to a question from reporters about Byers on Monday. "We also expect that on Tuesday we will be able to talk about restoring the entire range of Russian-American relations," Peskov said, referring to the talks between Washington and Moscow in Saudi Arabia. "Accordingly, certain events can be viewed in this context." Meet The Team Trump Picked To Negotiate Ending The Russia-ukraine War Senior Russian and U.S. officials met in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to discuss improving relations and an end to Moscow's war in Ukraine – without representatives from Kyiv. The talks are meant to lead to a meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as Trump has stated they agreed to begin negotiations on ending the war. Arrests of American nationals in Russia have become increasingly common in recent years, with relations between Moscow and Washington sinking to Cold War lows over the war in Ukraine. Some have been released in prisoner exchanges. Byers' release comes as Marc Fogel, a U.S. citizen who was detained on drug charges in Russia four years ago, was released last week in exchange for Russian prisoner Alexander Vinnik, who had been detained by the U.S. government on cryptocurrency fraud charges. Mother of freed American hostage Marc Fogel thanks President Donald Trump: 'He kept his promise'
The mother of Marc Fogel, an American who had been detained in Russia since 2021, is expressing relief and gratitude to President Donald Trump for securing his release Tuesday. "(Trump) promised me he would get him out, and he kept his promise," Malphine Fogel told "America Reports." "I can't thank him enough." Marc Fogel, a history teacher who was working at the Anglo-American School in Moscow, is heading back to U.S. soil after Russia released him following talks with Trump administration officials. Fogel was serving a 14-year sentence after his arrest in August 2021 at a Russian airport for being in possession of drugs, which his family and supporters said were medically prescribed marijuana. His mother, Malphine, met with Trump before his fateful rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last year, asking the then-presidential nominee to not forget her son's name. He assured her that he would bring her son home. Now, Malphine is celebrating that fulfilled promise. Russia Says Us Relations 'On The Brink Of A Breakup,' Won't Confirm Trump-putin Talk Read On The Fox News App "I met with President Trump, and he was just as cordial as he could be," Malphine Fogel recalled of the Butler meeting. "He told me three different times, 'If I get in,' he said, 'I'll get him out' and I really think he's been instrumental." Besides wanting to thank Trump "profusely" for his work in bringing her son home, Malphine Fogel also expressed gratitude to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others who worked on the case. She described the relief she felt after learning her son would soon be home. "It was a total surprise when he called, and he said he was in the Moscow airport," the joyous mom. "So, that meant that (they) had taken him out of the prison to Moscow. ... The last week or so, for some crazy reason, I had a better feeling about things, but I hadn't heard from him in a week, so I thought that was odd and when he called this morning, it was just a total shock." Fogel said her son will be "sore from all the hugs" he receives once he lands in the United States. "It's just an unbelievable situation right now," she said. "We're just waiting and waiting to get him into the U.S. I think the first thing he'll do is stoop down and kiss the ground."
