Illinois officials: No rush for Real ID unless you're flying soon without a passport
The Brief TSA begins enforcing Real ID requirements this Wednesday, May 7. You can still get a Real ID after the deadline, and most people don't need one immediately. Illinois officials are asking residents not to wait in long lines unless they're flying soon without a passport. CHICAGO - Real ID enforcement starts Wednesday, but Illinois officials say there's no need to rush—especially if you're not flying soon. What we know Beginning May 7, the Transportation Security Administration will start enforcing federal Real ID requirements for air travel. But contrary to what some may think, that date is not a hard deadline for getting the enhanced ID. Lines have already stretched for blocks at places like the downtown Chicago Super Center (191 N. Clark Street). Crowds wrapped around Lake Street and onto Dearborn near the Goodman Theatre on Monday, with some customers waiting more than three hours to enter the facility. Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is urging residents to hold off—unless they have immediate travel plans and no passport. "We don't want to discourage people from getting a Real ID, but the fact is the vast majority of people do not need a Real ID before Wednesday," Giannoulias said. "Please, please, please know that we will be issuing Real IDs for the foreseeable future, probably forever." What you can do You can still get a Real ID after May 7. There's no cutoff for applying, and many people may find it easier to go later, once the initial surge dies down. If you're flying after the new enforcement date and don't have a passport, passport card, DHS Trusted Traveler card, or another federally accepted form of ID, you'll need a Real ID to board domestic flights. According to Giannoulias, there will be a grace period instituted by the Department of Homeland Security. According to an April press release issued by the TSA: "Passengers who present a state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant and who do not have another acceptable alternative (e.g., passport) can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint." If you already have a valid passport—or aren't flying anytime soon—you can skip the Real ID lines for now. Giannoulias emphasized that a Real ID is not required to: Drive a vehicle, if you already have a valid license Identify yourself with a standard Illinois state ID Travel for anyone under 18 years old The Chicago Super Center site opens back up on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. The Source FOX 32's Kasey Chronis reported on this story.

TSA says travelers without REAL ID will be pulled out of line, "We have a plan in place."
Starting May 7, travelers flying within the United States will need a REAL ID-compliant identification to pass through TSA airport checkpoints, marking a significant shift in airport security requirements. At Boston Logan International Airport, many passengers are already prepared for the new rule. Mary Atwell, who's headed to South Carolina, says she got her REAL ID a couple of years ago in anticipation of the change. "I think it would be very stressful," Atwell said of not having a REAL ID. "Although I do have a passport at home. I almost brought it just to be on the safe side." A REAL ID-compliant license is marked by a star in the top right corner. As of the deadline, this ID-or an acceptable alternative-will be required for domestic air travel and access to certain federal facilities. Other valid forms of identification TSA officials emphasize that travelers without a REAL ID won't necessarily be turned away, if they are carrying another form of valid identification. "You may not have that star on your driver's license, but you may already have a passport, a passport card, a military DOD card, a DHS Trusted Traveler card," said TSA representative Dan Velez. TSA also assured travelers that the change won't result in increased wait times. At Logan, officials say they're prepared to manage the transition efficiently. Travelers without REAL ID will be pulled out of line "We have a plan in place," Velez said. "We're going to be pulling aside and identifying individuals who do not have a REAL ID compliant ID and pulling them out of line, so that those who do have it will be able to go through the line and keep going." According to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, 58% of state residents are already REAL ID compliant. TSA says if you don't have the REAL ID, you will still be able to travel, but it will take significantly more time to get through the security checkpoint.
