Doctor Who Boss Cheers His Tearful Time Lord: ‘Fans Get Up in Arms,' But ‘It's a Princely Performance'
In the latest Doctor Who season opener (pictured below, on the left), Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteen spilt a tear whilst processing the sudden death, at the hands of their robot overlords, of Sasha, a Belindachandra-1 resident he had grown quite close to in his six months on the planet. It was far from the first time that this Doctor has been brought to a single, powerful tear (or more) — sometimes of the happy kind, but more often sad — in his 11 appearances thus far, dating back to December 2023's 'The Giggle' special (fronted by Gatwa's predecessor, David Tennant). And while some fans have speculated that the recurring waterworks are perhaps a clue that this especially emotional Time Lord is 'broken' in a way akin to Peter Capaldi's Twelve, current showrunner Russel T Davies is here to clear the air. 'He thought Ruby (played by Millie Gibson) had vanished, been erased from time and space, which was astonishing, and he turned around in the studio and gave us that performance, which was absolutely spellbinding.' Davies thus waves off the suggestion that the tears are scripted, as some clue to something amiss with this regeneration. 'You don't tell an actor whether to cry, not to cry, not an actor of that stature. Absolutely not,' he scoffs. 'It's like, you wouldn't tell anyone to laugh or not to laugh! It's beautiful thing he does, and it's a completely new thing for the Doctor, that opens doorways into whole new experiences.' Davies says that his more emotional available Time Lord is but one of a multitude of ways one Doctor can vary from another, and how the long-running sci-fi series itself can be freshened up. 'Diversity is many things, and sometimes it's putting emotions on screen you haven't seen before, or that the Doctor has withheld himself from,' the showrunner posits. 'But it does make me laugh…. I know sometimes fans get up in arms about and they complain about it,' he notes. 'They're the same fans who say, 'Why don't you do something new with the program?' and you're like, hello. 'It's literally a princely performance,' he avows of Gatwa's take on Fifteen. 'I'm just here to watch and thank the lucky stars that I get to share in a princely performance like that. What an actor. Ryder takes executive chef position at Twelve
Apr. 9—Hannah Ryder, chef de cuisine at Twelve, is taking over as executive chef for the fine dining restaurant. Ryder will replace Colin Wyatt, Twelve's executive chef since its launch on Thames Street in 2022. Wyatt will remain involved with Twelve, but is turning his attention to the upcoming launch of Douro, the Portuguese- and Spanish-inspired venue that will be a sister restaurant to Twelve and Evo Kitchen + Bar, all properties of the Prentice Hospitality Group. A Cumberland native, 27-year-old Ryder has previously cooked at Evo and another Prentice property, the Chebeague Island Inn. She also worked in New York City at legendary Chef Daniel Boulud's Café Boulud and at the acclaimed Scandinavian restaurant Aquavit. Ryder has been chef de cuisine at Twelve since the restaurant opened. Ryder said in a news release that she is "honored" to step into her new role, and "incredibly grateful to Chef Colin Wyatt, whose guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in my growth and in shaping Twelve's success." "I feel fortunate to work alongside such a talented and passionate team — one that consistently pushes the boundaries of creativity and remains deeply committed to delivering unforgettable guest experiences," Ryder added. ‘Malcolm in the Middle' revival will be missing key actor who ditched Hollywood
"Malcolm in the Middle" is set for a four-episode revival on Disney+ with all but one of the original cast returning. In December, the streaming service announced the news with stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek on social media. It was recently announced, per Variety, that Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield, who played Muniz's brothers Francis and Reese, respectively, on the show, will also be returning. However, Erik Per Sullivan, who played youngest brother Dewey, will not be back for the series. According to the outlet, his role will be played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, who had roles in "Fargo" and "The Expanse." Per Sullivan has been absent from Hollywood for 15 years, with his last credited role in the 2010 film "Twelve." The actor has also skipped out on "Malcolm in the Middle" reunions over the years. Kaczmarek, who played mom Lois on the hit sitcom, spoke about Per Sullivan in a 2024 interview with Malcolm France, saying he is "well, he's very, very well." "He wasn't interested in acting at all. He goes to school at a very, very, very prestigious American university that he's asked us all to be quiet about," she continued, saying he is doing graduate work in Victorian literature. She added that she admired his decision, explaining, "I think so many people think being in show business is just the greatest thing in the world, and it's not for everybody." "He's a very grateful kid, for Dewey," Kaczmarek said. "Malcolm in the Middle" originally ran on Fox for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006, earning 33 Emmy nominations, including two wins for the late Cloris Leachman as best guest actress in a comedy and two wins each for best directing and best writing for a comedy. The new episodes will feature, according to the official logline shared with Variety, "Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family's chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party." No release date has been announced. Muniz told E! News in February, "I'm so excited. I think Brian and I first started talking at a dinner that we had in 2015. And the fact that now, 10 years later, 25 years after the show started, it's going to happen—I'm really excited. I think people are going to be thrilled to see everybody and the ideas that they've come up with." In a 2024 conversation with Malcolm France, Jane Kaczmarek, who played Dewey's mother, Lois, shared an update on Sullivan's current endeavors. She revealed that he retired from acting due to a lack of interest in the profession. Therefore, he pursued a different career path. She said that currently he is a student at 'a very prestigious American university' and pursuing a degree in Victorian literature. Reflecting on Sullivan's retirement from acting, she said, 'I admire it because so many people think being in show business is the greatest thing in the world. It's not for everyone.' Currently, Sullivan is 33 years old. He has been replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark in Malcolm in the Middle's revival show.
