Who was Harvey Milk? Late SF gay rights icon at center of ship renaming controversy
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The controversy over Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordering the renaming of a Navy vessel has thrust the name of the late Harvey Milk back into the national limelight. Milk, a gay rights icon, is the namesake of the U.S. Navy replenishment oiler the USNS Harvey Milk. The vessel is a John Lewis-class replenishment ship that was named in 2016 by then-Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who said all John-Lewis class oilers would be named for leaders who fought for civil and human rights. DA will seek death penalty at Half Moon Bay mass shooting trial Born in Woodmere, New York in 1930, Milk was a naval and combat veteran who served for years during the Korean War before being forced out for being gay. Milk made history in 1978 when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming one of the first openly gay men elected to public office in California, and the nation. During his brief tenure in office, Milk championed the rights of the gay community and sponsored a bill to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. That bill was signed into law by then-Mayor George Moscone. Milk, however, would serve less than a year in office before meeting with a tragic end. On Nov. 27, 1978, Milk and Moscone were assassinated in San Francisco City Hall by former supervisor Dan White. Milk was 48 years old at the time of the killings. White served just five years in prison for the killings. His attorneys employed a legal defense known a diminished capacity and argued that his mental deterioration was exacerbated by a junk food binge. Bay Area newspapers dubbed this argument the 'Twinkie defense.' White died by suicide in 1985. In the years and decades since his killing, Milk rose to the status of gay rights icon. In San Francisco's Castro District where Milk rose to political prominence as the self-proclaimed 'Mayor of Castro Street,' there is a plaza named after him. In 2018, Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport was renamed Harvey Milk Terminal 1. A bust of Milk can be found in San Francisco City Hall. In 2009, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Milk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also the subject of the 2008 Gus Van Sant film 'Milk,' which starred Sean Penn in the title role, and won two Oscars — Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. The USNS Harvey Milk was named in 2016 and launched in 2021. The unusual order to rename the vessel marks the latest move by Hegseth and the wider Trump administration to purge all programs, policies, books and social media mentions of references to diversity, equity and inclusion. And it comes during Pride Month — the same timing as the Pentagon's campaign to force transgender troops out of the U.S. military. The Associated Press contributed to this report. CHICAGO (WGN) — When it comes to groundbreaking inventions in the Land of the Lincoln, Illinois is no stranger to life-changing innovations. The Ferris Wheel, the Skyscraper, and even dentistry are just some of the state's key innovations. But do some exist that you may not know about? WGN-TV has compiled a short list of items that originated in Illinois: The inventor of the mobile phone, Chicago native Martin Cooper, made the first call on April 6, 1973. The Motorola researcher and executive is primarily regarded as the 'father of the cell phone' because he led the team behind the invention. According to following the belief that the cell phone should be portable and not solely operable in automobiles, Cooper and his team developed the DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) phone, which was 23 cm (9 inches) tall and weighed 1.1 kg (2.5 pounds). The phone is often referred to as a brick phone due to its resemblance. Users paid $3,500 for the phone, equivalent to more than $25,000 in today's dollars, based on inflation. The delicious 'Golden Child' of Hostess was invented on April 6, 1930, at Continental Baking Company in western suburban Schiller Park. According to the Hostess, baker James Alexander Dewar was behind the idea of sponge cakes, with the original filling consisting of banana-flavored cream filling, and later replaced by the vanilla cream filling that generations have grown to love. Dewar noticed shortbread pans not in use and came up with the idea. The name Twinkie also stems from a billboard near the production plant that bore the name 'Twinkle Toe Shoes.' The Twinkie now comes in various flavors and remains a popular snack among Illinoisans and beyond. Edward Seymour is credited with inventing spray paint in west suburban Sycamore in 1949. According to Seymour created the first aerosolized spray paint can by inventing a novelty spray can to demonstrate an aluminum paint he had made for painting steam radiators. Based on the same principle as spray deodorizers and insecticides, the device featured a small can of paint equipped with an aerosol propellant and fitted with a spray head. 'Soon after perfecting the first spray can, Ed and the employees of his new company formulated the paint, which was mixed and filled with aerosol using a combination of customized and specially engineered machinery.' After bankruptcy, closure beloved Mexican brand set for comeback
Just because a company declares bankruptcy does not mean its brands aren't popular. A lot of times, a company runs out of money for reasons that have little to do with its products. Maybe it overextended itself by building too many factories, or perhaps it made other financial mistakes. Sometimes, successful companies take on debt as a way to cash out shareholders or otherwise free up capital. Related: Beloved local Italian restaurant closing after 58 years When Hostess went bankrupt a few years ago, people still loved its signature Twinkie, Cupcake, and Fruit Pie. Demand for those products remained high, but the overall company faced larger struggles. The same thing happened when New England Candy Company went bankrupt. That brand manufactured the controversial (as in some people love them and some people hate them) NECCO wafers, along with several other popular candy brands. In the case of a bankruptcy, whether those brands come back depends on what happens to the company's assets. Sometimes, whoever ends up owning the brands has no immediate plans to bring them back. Fans of a beloved taco brand were very worried that the bankruptcy and collapse of its parent company would mean the end of their favorite taco shells. New reports suggest that will not be the case. "Gladstone Food Products Company Inc., best known for their taco shell brand La Tiara, was put into receivership on March 18, 2025. The company, inclusive of property, equipment, brands and trademarks, is in the process of being sold through a closed auction process," according to a press release. La Tiara Taco Shells started disappearing from shelves in March. "Well this just ruined my day. The Best taco shells every that we have eaten for the last 15 years almost every Tuesday is permanently closed. We had new taco shells tonight and I asked why we didn't have La Tiara taco shells and April Mueller said I can't find them in the store so the problem solver in me said no biggie I'll order some online which lead me down the rabbit hole to finding out they closed. This is unacceptable," shared Scott Mueller on Facebook. "I can't find the La Tiera taco shells. I love them. So many other taco shells are tough, not crispy at all," Mona Lightfoot wrote. Now, fans of the brand have received some good news. Once Gladstone was put into receivership, Eric Moraczewski was appointed by the bankruptcy court to oversee the sale of the brand's assets. "Since the appointment, the opportunity has attracted significant nationwide interest from potential buyers," according to a press release. La Tiara, both its brand and its recipe, were part of the sale. Moraczewski shared in a May 20 court documents that a buyer had been found. He also shared that the sale would be free and clear of all liens, claims, and encumbrances. "The proceeds are expected to fully repay secured and unsecured creditors and return equity to the company," KMBC reported. It appears that a single buyer is purchasing the majority of the company's assets. No company was named, but court documents described it as a "large, publicly traded company." It's widely expected that the deal will pave the way for La Tiara taco shells to return to stores, but no specific information on that was shared.
