Gerry Adams tries yet again to rewrite history
One of the greatest exchanges on Twitter, the social media platform now known as X, occurred just before Christmas nine years ago. For it was on December 22, 2016, Gerry Adams tweeted: 'This house is like Santa's grotto. Takes half an hour 2 switch off fairy lights and assorted Yule illuminations. Feel like a grinch now.' To which a civilian named @realnannysheila replied: 'Surely you know someone who can fit a timer?'
Twitter, and social media more generally, may be blamed for many things but it redeems itself with moments such as these. For truly, the gap between how a person sees themselves and how they are seen by others is sometimes so vast it cannot possibly be bridged.
