Oral cancer protection campaign launched
Ahead of the World No Tobacco Day on May 31, Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology in Mysuru has launched a 'Two Minute Action for Oral Cancer Protection' campaign.
The campaign launched by the hospital in association with Merck Specialities Private Limited, with the hashtag #ActAgainstOralCancer, encourages individuals to perform a quick self-check using a mirror – a tool that's always within reach', said a statement here on Wednesday.
'People are urged to look out for warning signs such as white or red patches, non-healing ulcers, persistent swelling, voice changes, or unexplained bleeding'.
'The core message is: Feel, Look and Act. Strategic placement of mirrors in hospital waiting areas will further encourage awareness and self-checks among patients and visitors', the statement said.
Dr. Y.S. Madhavi, Consultant Radiation Oncologist and Medical Superintendent, Bharath Hospital & Institute of Oncology, who was present on the occasion, said a surge had been observed in cancer cases, especially oral cancer, due to late detection and poor lifestyle habits like tobacco and alcohol use. 'A simple, regular self-check can help in catching symptoms early and improve outcomes,' she said.
'Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers among Indians. People often ignore early signs like non-healing mouth sores or voice changes. This initiative reminds everyone that early detection through a mirror check is quick and vital,' emphasised Dr. Srinivas K.G., senior consultant medical oncologist.
'Radiation therapy is highly effective when cancer is detected early. This campaign reinforces the importance of acting at the right time,' stated Dr. Vinay Kumar Muttagi, senior consultant radiation oncologist.
'Oral cancer often starts with small, visible signs. The mirror is a powerful ally. Just two minutes every month can help identify those signs before it's too late,' said Dr. Raxith Sringeri, surgical oncologist and robotic surgeon.
