Princess Kate makes unexpected nod to Harry and Meghan with surprise detail
The Princess of Wales attended her first Buckingham Palace garden party in a recycled dress in butter yellow - the shade of the season - but another part of her outfit had a connection to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle The Princess of Wales made an unexpected nod to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with a surprise detail on her latest outing. Kate surprised guests by joining husband Prince William, at a Buckingham Palace garden party - her first one in two years. The princess, who is in remission from cancer, missed the whole of the 2024 garden party season while undergoing treatment during what William described as a 'brutal' year. Kate, whose attendance was not announced in advance as is the custom for garden parties, was dressed in a butter yellow Emilia Wickstead dress and hat by Philip Treacy. Both pieces she had worn before - and it turns out the hat has a connection to her estranged brother-in-law Harry and his wife Meghan. That's because the hat, complete with yellow flowers, is exactly the same as the one she wore to the Sussexes' wedding. It also comes just days after Harry and Meghan celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary, with Meghan marking the day with a selection of personal family photos on Instagram. Kate also wore the same hat at Trooping the Colour in 2019. Meanwhile, Kate's dress yesterday, which was in a colour dubbed the shade of the season, was also a repeat. She last wore it to a service at St Paul's Cathedral during the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Her diamond earrings had also been seen before, as she opted to wear a pair from Robinson Pelham that she had worn on her wedding day in 2011 after receiving them as a gift from her parents. During yesterday's party, William and Kate met guests from a number of their patronages, military affiliations and passion projects, including Homewards, Action for Children and Ty Hafan, as well as Duchy of Cornwall tenants. Among them was the family of aspiring photographer Liz Hatton, who died in November from an aggressive cancer called desmoplastic small round cell tumour. The 17-year-old, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was pictured being hugged by Kate at Windsor Castle just weeks before she died after being invited to take pictures of William at an investiture. Also at the event were William's cousins, Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall, with Kensington Palace saying the prince and princess had specially invited the younger generation of the royal family to accompany them. Other attendees included Holocaust survivor Steven Frank, who was photographed by Kate in 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust, and fundraising youngster Tony Hudgell. Ten-year-old Tony, who is a double amputee and previously met Kate at the Evelina London Children's Day Surgery Unit, missed a garden party last year after getting stuck in traffic on his way there, prompting another invitation from the Palace this year. Kate last appeared at a royal garden party in May 2023, just days after the King's Coronation, when the social event was staged in celebration of the historic occasion. Some 7,500 guests mingled in the spring sunshine on the neatly manicured lawn of the royal residence on Tuesday, as William, Kate, and other members of the royal family stood on the West Terrace for the National Anthem. The official engagement marks another step in Kate's gradual return to post-cancer public duties.

Garden parties have been held at Buckingham Palace since the 1860s when Queen Victoria began what were known as 'breakfasts', although they took place in the afternoon. Guests queue in tea tents and take their seats on nearby chairs, and around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed at each party. Yeomen of the Guard, dressed in their red and gold ceremonial costumes, form part of the proceedings, and people are free to stroll around the vast expanse of the gardens while a military band plays background music.

The Princess of Wales has stunned in the shade of season as she attended her first Buckingham Palace garden party in two years. It is the first garden party that Kate has attended in since 2023 after missing last year's events as she was in the middle of her cancer treatment. The princess, whose attendance was not announced in advance as is the custom for garden parties, was dressed in a butter yellow Emilia Wickstead dress and hat by Philip Treacy. Joining them for the party, were Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, as well as William's non-working royal cousins Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall, with Kensington Palace saying the prince and princess had specially invited the younger generation of the royal family to accompany them. The Princess of Wales makes surprising revelation about George, Charlotte and Louis' royal outfits
Royal fans have often wondered where the likes of the Princess of Wales store their clothes, and on her outings in South Wales on Thursday, she shared a fascinating insight. Kate, 43, was given a tour of Corgi, a family-run business in Ammanford, near Swansea, which specialises in handmade socks and knitwear. As the Princess marvelled at the intricate processes the factory uses, she revealed during the visit that she "archived" all of her own children's clothes, noting that the garments that had been well made always "wore really well". "It's so lovely to reuse the things that are well made," she said. Over the years, we've seen Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis dressed in heirloom pieces and hand-me-downs. Several of George's outfits have been passed down to his younger siblings, while Charlotte looked to be wearing a pair of her uncle Prince Harry's red buckle-up shoes on Prince William and Kate's royal tour of Germany and Poland in 2017. For his Trooping the Colour debut in 2019, a one-year-old Louis sported a blue and white outfit previously worn by Harry from the 1980s. Louis was also seen wearing his father William's sailor suit for the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. The youngest member of the Wales family has also inherited a petrol-blue Amaia jacket, a collared sweater and red striped dungarees - all from his big brother George's wardrobe. During her visit to the factory, Kate also tried her hand at sewing a sock on one the machines. The Princess spent several minutes trying to get to grips with the process, laughing at her own efforts. "It's so fiddly," she said. "It's definitely not my forte." The Princess said employee Shauna Kinsey, 24, who has worked for the company for six years, "made it look so easy'. She added, laughing: "It's really hard. I'm sorry, I'm so terrible." Kate was shown around by owners Chris Jones, 56, and his sister, Lisa Wood, 55. The siblings took over the business from their father Huw Jones, 86, in the 1990s. "It's so lovely to be here," she said on arrival. "I've been looking forward to it, I've heard all about your brand." On the main factory floor, the Princess was also told that children from the local school came in for work experience and to learn the skills. "It's nice to see the younger ones coming in and learning this craftsmanship," Kate commented. The royal also appeared touched as she was given gifts on departure – a cream, zip up cashmere cardigan, made especially for her, as well as a navy cashmere wrap for her mother, Carole Middleton, to mark her 70th birthday on 31 January. "That's so sweet of you, thank you, I wasn't expecting it," she said. Earlier in the day, Kate visited her new patronage, Ty Hafan children's hospice in South Wales, where she joined a stay and play session with families.
