Rams TE Tyler Higbee ranked among the worst starters in the NFL
Rams TE Tyler Higbee ranked among the worst starters in the NFL Tight end was one of the Los Angeles Rams' smaller needs this offseason following a season where the trio of Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen all finished with fewer than 70 receiving yards each. Granted, Higbee missed all but three games with an injury, but the point still stands that the Rams needed tight end help. L.A. tried to remedy that situation by drafting Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson with the No. 46 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after trading back from the No. 26 pick. But he likely won't begin the season as the starter, even though Higbee was ranked among the worst starting tight ends in the NFL by Pro Football Focus' John Kosko. Higbee came in at No. 26 on Kosko's list, right after Seattle Seahawks' tight end Noah Fant. "Higbee could be on his way out in a contract year after the Rams selected Oregon's Terrance Ferguson in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft," Kosko wrote. "He is coming off an injury-shortened 2024 season but has been productive when healthy. His 79.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 shows he has good play left in the tank, but at 32 years old, his prime is behind him." Therein lies the crux of why Higbee isn't long for the Rams: He's older, injured and only slightly productive. His best season came in 2019 when he caught 69 receptions for 734 yards and three touchdowns, while Higbee's best season with quarterback Matthew Stafford came in 2022 when he caught 72 passes for 620 yards and three touchdowns. Ferguson is the heir apparent to the position and could even take control of the job early this season. For now, it's Higbee's show. The veteran will be crucial for Ferguson's development early on. The two could even see offensive packages together as Sean McVay looks to add some wrinkles for 2025. But at least the Rams have a plan for the position now.

Experts grades are split on the Rams taking TE Terrance Ferguson in the 2025 NFL Draft
The Los Angeles Rams' first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft is in, and experts have had mixed reviews. L.A. took Oregon right end Terrance Ferguson with the No. 46 pick to bring another pass-catching option who could also eventually take over for Tyler Higbee. Ferguson was consistently solid in college with 134 career receptions for 1,537 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Ducks. NFL analysts either loved or hated the pick for the Rams. While most agreed that the positional need was there, there wasn't a consensus on if Ferguson was the right player to take here if the Rams could have waited until later in the draft to select him. Rams fans were equally unsure of the selection. Here are what experts have initially thought about and graded the Ferguson pick: "Sean McVay and Les Snead really wanted their playmaking tight end. One year after their push for Brock Bowers came up empty, the Rams turn to Ferguson, an impressive athlete who should serve a solid complementary role in the passing attack that will center on Puka Nacua and Davante Adams." "The Rams address their key need to groom a dynamic good-hands recieiving tight end behind Tyler Higbee with a smart intermediate target who gets open in clutch situations through the red zone." "My TE2. Big, functional athleticism. High-level run-after-catch ability. Quality blocker too. Has enough smoothness to separate. Will be fun down the seam with Matthew Stafford early in his career. Underrated prospect. Great pick." "Ferguson, who was at this year's Senior Bowl–which the Rams love–gives Los Angeles an actual weapon at tight end. Tyler Higbee never developed into that player despite signing two contract extensions. Head coach/offensive play-caller Sean McVay should be able to get the most out of his new tight end, while the Rams will benefit from the extra first-round pick that they acquired for next year's draft. "There are two ways to look at Ferguson as a prospect. Either he was a highly regarded recruit who didn't quite live up to expectations at Oregon, or he became a sleeper prospect in this year's class because he still has plenty of untapped potential." "I mean, Ferguson is really similar to Tyler Higbee is already on the roster. I feel like Ferguson could've been there a little later in the draft, but he's a long and tall tight end who is a safe underneath option. I just wonder if they wanted to address the speed in their offense in a better way."
