Padres' Gavin Sheets avoids head injury after crash into wall

June 3 - San Diego left fielder Gavin Sheets said Monday that he passed all concussion tests following a hard face-first collision with the wall during the Padres' Sunday home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sheets was down on the warning track for several minutes after trying to prevent Adam Frazier's fourth-inning homer. He eventually was helped off the field and diagnosed with a head bruise, hip soreness and a jammed wrist and thumb. "All things considered, felt pretty good today," Sheets said prior to San Diego's road game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. "Woke up, head felt good. Last night, I was obviously sore, mainly in the hip. But I woke up today, and all things considered for the play, I felt pretty good." The left-handed-hitting Sheets wasn't in the Monday starting lineup despite the Giants going with ace right-hander Logan Webb. Tyler Wade got the start in left. Sheets, 29, has been a major surprise for the Padres this season. He leads the team with 34 RBIs and ranks second with 11 homers. Sheets was non-tendered by the Chicago White Sox following last season and the Padres took a flier on him and signed him to minor league deal just before the start of spring training. Sheets made the team and quickly turned himself a key cog as a first baseman and designated hitter. He is batting .267 and slugging .494 in 54 games and was just recently asked to play left field because of his hot bat. "I'll do whatever -- whatever they want me to do," Sheets said. "Whatever gets me in the lineup, whatever they need me to do, I'll do." With Sheets avoiding a serious head injury, Padres manager Mike Shildt had fun with the situation in which the 6-foot-3, 235-pound utility man ran full steam into the wall. "I think the fence is OK," Shildt said. --Field Level Media

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado hit a tying homer in the eighth inning and Tyler Wade scored the winning run on Cade Gibson's wild pitch in the 11th as the San Diego Padres rallied past the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Monday night. Jose Iglesias had a two-run double in the fourth to begin San Diego's comeback from a 3-0 deficit. Machado tied it with his sixth homer, a leadoff shot to left-center off reliever Calvin Faucher. Adrian Morejon (2-2) stranded a Marlins runner at third in the 11th for the win. Wade, who replaced Machado as the automatic runner at second base, moved to third on a groundout before Gibson (0-2) intentionally walked Xander Bogaerts. The Marlins used an outfielder as a fifth infielder, but Gibson threw a curveball in the dirt on a 1-2 pitch to Jake Cronenworth. Miami grabbed the lead two batters into the game against starter Randy Vásquez. Jesús Sánchez singled and scored on a double by Agustín Ramírez. Otto Lopez made it 2-0 with a two-out single. Sánchez hit Vásquez's pitch 417 feet out to center at 111 mph for his third home run and a 3-0 lead in the second. Vásquez gave up three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Bogaerts singled with two outs in the fourth and stole his 10th base before Cronenworth reached on a throwing error by third baseman Connor Norby. Luis Campusano walked to load the bases and Iglesias doubled to make it 3-2. Miami starter Ryan Weathers allowed two unearned runs in 5 2/3 innings. David Morgan retired the only two batters he faced in his big league debut for San Diego. Miami's Victor Mesa Jr. struck out in his first career at-bat after coming in to play center in the seventh. 11th-inning wild pitch sends Padres past Marlins

May 27 - Tyler Wade scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning Monday night as the San Diego Padres edged the visiting Miami Marlins 4-3. Wade pinch-ran for Manny Machado at third after Gavin Sheets started the inning by grounding out to second, moving Machado up 90 feet. Miami used a five-man infield with Xander Bogaerts batting, but Cade Gibson (0-2) intentionally walked him. With Jake Cronenworth hitting, Gibson bounced a breaking ball to the right of catcher Liam Hicks. Wade took off from third and scored on a close play. Adrian Morejon (2-2) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 11th as the Padres to earned their first extra-inning triumph in four attempts this year. San Diego earned its third win in four games overall. Jesus Sanchez and Connor Norby each had two hits and an RBI for the Marlins, who had won their previous two games. San Diego forced extra innings after Machado led off the eighth with a homer to left-center, his sixth of the year and third in four games, against reliever Calvin Faucher. Machado's homer traveled an estimated 406 feet left both starting pitchers with a no-decision. Miami's Ryan Weathers lasted 5 2/3 innings, permitting three hits and two runs, both unearned, with three walks and six strikeouts. San Diego's Randy Vasquez pitched a season-high 6 1/3 innings, yielding six hits and three runs while walking one and fanning five. Vasquez experienced all of his trouble in the first two innings. He trailed 1-0 just two hitters into the game as Jesus Sanchez singled and Agustin Ramirez followed with an RBI double. Connor Norby tacked on a two-out single that cashed in Ramirez. Sanchez made it 3-0 in the second when he drilled his third homer of the year to right-center. That was the last hit Vasquez allowed in his 89-pitch stint. Meanwhile, Weathers stifled his old team until his new team made him get four outs in the fourth. Bogaerts singled with two outs and swiped second. Norby then committed a throwing error on Jake Cronenworth's bouncer to third that should have ended the inning. After Luis Campusano coaxed a walk to fill the bases, Jose Iglesias ripped a double just inside third base, scoring Bogaerts and Cronenworth. --Field Level Media
