1984 anti-Sikh riots: Delhi court concludes recording ex-DSGMC chief's statement against Tytler

A Delhi court on Friday concluded recording the statement of former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK as a prosecution witness in a 1984-anti Sikh riots case against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. Appearing before special judge Jitendra Singh, he claimed of having received a pen drive allegedly containing the voice recording of Tytler confessing his role in the riots. 'Matter is at the stage of further cross examination of Manjit Singh GK. He has been cross examined and discharged,' the judge said. The matter would now be heard on June 4. During his deposition, Singh claimed having received an envelope at his house in 2018, containing a letter and the pen drive, which he later handed over to the CBI, which was investigating the matter. Singh said Tytler, who was present in court, threatened a witness in the case. He would continue to record his statement on April 21. The case is linked to the killings of three persons at Gurdwara Pul Bangash in the national capital in 1984. The judge on November 12, 2024 concluded recording the statement of Lakhvinder Kaur, the widow of Badal Singh, who was killed by a mob at Gurudwara Pul Bangash during the riots. The court framed charges of murder and other offences against Tytler on September 13 last year. A witness claimed Tytler came out of a white car in front of the gurdwara on November 1, 1984, and instigated a mob against the community, leading to the killings. A sessions court in 2023 granted anticipatory bail to Tytler in the case on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh and a surety of like amount. Tytler was directed not to tamper with the evidence in the case or leave the country without the court's permission, among other conditions. The agency invoked charges under Sections 147 (rioting), 109 (abetment) read with 302 (murder) of the IPC, among others, against him.

1984 riots: Ex-DSGMC chief corroborates Jagdish Tytler's ‘confession' video

Former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Manjit Singh GK on Monday appeared in the Rouse Avenue Court, New Delhi, as a witness against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler for the latter's purported involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. A recorded video, part of the sting operation done way back in 2018, was played in the court, which GK confirmed as the same that he had submitted against Tytler when he was DSGMC president. GK said the video was sent to him by a source. Later forensic examination by the Central Forensic Scientific Laboratory (CFSL) of the video clip was also conducted corroborating that the recorded video is original. The voice samples of Tytler were also taken which were matched with Tytler's voice by CFSL. The video shows Tytler admitting to his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. Tytler is facing charges for killing three Sikhs at Pul Bangash Gurdwara during the riots. In today's hearing, GK was cross-examined by the defence lawyer, who denied the presence of Tytler in the recorded video. According to HS Phoolka, who appeared in the court on behalf of the riot victims, GK was asked to identify Tytler in the video recording. The next hearing has been fixed for April 22.
