Tzaneen Classic lives up to its name

Tzaneen Classic lives up to its name TZANEEN – The Tzaneen Classic bowls tournament saw teams from Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Zimbabwe battle it out for the top spot on the log at this prestigious tournament proudly presented by Tzaneen Bowls Club (TBC). The competition kicked off on Saturday with four pre-drawn rounds and culminated in three strength vs strength rounds on Sunday. There were some classic clashes between old foes on the greens with a lot of new players taking on the Classic for the first time. Zane Fanie (skip), Tjokkie von Straate, Hendrik van der Linden and Deidre Sauer from Duiwelskloof Bowls Club had the locals rooting for them in the finals. They took the top spot on the log on Sunday with 67 points, winning the competition, trophy and cash prize. Mike Eaton's team (Zimbabwe) took second place. Ina Fourie's team (Gauteng) featured two former Tzaneeners, Gerda Jordaan van Zyl (daughter of former TBC president Peet Jordaan) and Carien Engelbrecht (former TBC club president) took third place overall. Wessel Pretorius, Robbie Kruger, Gielie de Kok and Herbie Fox from TBC took fourth place overall. Carl Volschenk's team from Louis Trichardt won the plate division. Ernst Swiglaar, president of TBC thanked the players, sponsors, advertisers, TBC members, committee and catering team for making the tournament a success. 'Whether you walked away with the main prize, or just a great story about a shot that almost worked – we hope you leave with having made new friends and happy memories and maybe even sunburn in the shape of your hat,' said Swiglaar.
