Vermont Law and Graduate School receives largest-ever donation, will support animal protection law

ROYALTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – The Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS), which was ranked 4th in U.S. News and World Report this year for its environmental law program, announced Thursday that it had received a $10 million donation to support work over the next three years. The donor was anonymous, but the university was able to say that the gift came from an 'international foundation dedicated to solving environmental challenges'. Linsenmeir family receives final settlement years after Vermonter's death The donation will go towards supporting the school's knowledge of animal protection policy as well as agriculture and food systems. It will also help with advancing a new project in aquaculture, or seafood farming. Professor Delcianna Winders at the university's Animal Law and Policy Institute calls the gift 'an incredible vote of confidence in the VLGS Animal Law and Policy Institute's pathbreaking work to train tomorrow's animal advocacy leaders.' $22M available for NY municipalities to fight climate change VLGS had 690 students enrolled in 2023 in its masters and doctorate programs, including Food and Agricultural Law and Policy, Restorative Justice, and Climate and Environmental Policy. What are the top states in the U.S.? Here's where Vermont ranks

Vermont is one of the ten best state in the U.S., according to a new ranking from U.S. News and World Report. The Best States rankings look at eight categories: health care, education, natural environment, opportunity, economy, crime and corrections, infrastructure, and fiscal stability. With top rankings in the crime and corrections and natural environment categories, U.S. News gave Vermont the seventh spot. That makes it the second best New England state, coming in behind New Hampshire which was ranked No. 2. Vermont ranked very high in several key metrics. It was rated as the best state for opportunity, which looks at economic opportunity, affordability and equality It's one of the safest states, coming in at No. 4 for crime and safety. And it doesn't slack when it comes to the natural environment, coming in at No. 9. It also ranked No. 9 for infrastructure. The main ranking pulling it down was fiscal stability, coming in at No. 41. It's second lowest score was education, coming in at No. 23. New Hampshire's first place ranking in the crime and corrections category and fourth place ranking for natural environment helped propel the state to its second-place finish. 'The state's natural beauty stands out more for its valleys, rivers, lakes and mountains than its mere 13 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline,' said the report. 'Its highest peak, Mount Washington, stands at 6,288 feet in the White Mountains, and Lake Winnipesaukee is its best-known inland resort.' New Hampshire was also ranked 6th in opportunity, which included a first-place ranking in economic opportunity and third-place in equality. It's worst category was fiscal stability, with a ranking of 37th. Gov. Kelly Ayotte said the ranking comes as 'no surprise.' 'Today's ranking is a testament to our dedicated law enforcement officers, hardworking business leaders, and energetic, independent people,' she said in a post on X, also emphasizing the state's high public safety ranking. 'Thank you to all those who protect and serve our communities each day. Together, we will ensure our state remains the safest in the nation.' According to U.S. News and World Report, Utah is the best state in the country for the third year in a row. It earned top 10 marks in five categories: fiscal stability, economy, infrastructure, education and crime and corrections. The report said that Utah's economy has become one of the most diverse in the U.S., giving it great strength in the fiscal-related categories. "In the last two and a half decades, Utah's economy has outperformed the nation, had greater strength, and when we've had downturns, we have been able to rebound much more quickly in our state,' said Natalie Gochnour, director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah. Beach season is here. This RI spot was named one of the 'most underrated' in America

It's not a secret in Rhode Island, but now U.S. News and World Report is telling everyone that Block Island is one of the 'Best Underrated Travel Destinations in the U.S.' The media company ranked the island off the coast of Rhode Island as the fifth best underrated destination in the list released May 12. U.S. News and World Report uses both user and editors scores to rank vacation destinations. The destination's user score is calculated by tallying the percentage of 'yes' votes compared to the total votes a given destination receives. The editors' score is based on the average score a destination receives on categories including sights, culture, adventure, and food. U.S. News and World Report said that Block Island 'remains an understated getaway for East Coasters.' 'The island's 17 miles of beaches are largely undeveloped, and shorelines range from the rugged Mohegan Bluffs to the idyllic Crescent Beach,' said the ranking. 'You can also bike to the historic Southeast and North lighthouses or take an aquarium tour at the Block Island Maritime Institute. For a fun and different activity, search for handmade glass orbs (hidden along beaches and trails) as part of the Glass Float Project, a public art installation and scavenger hunt.' Block Island is located 12 miles south of mainland Rhode Island. You can get to Block Island by personal boat, ferry, or plane. A ferry can take 30 minutes to one hour, depending on if you go on the high-speed one or not and weather conditions. An Arizona city was named among the most underrated US travel destinations

Flagstaff was named among the most underrated vacation destinations in the country, according to a new ranking by U.S. News & World Report. The list highlights 26 U.S. places that don't often make it onto popular travel bucket lists but are just as worthy of recognition. These destinations may fly under the radar nationally, but they offer unique attractions, charm and experiences that rival better-known getaways. Here is a look at why Flagstaff made the cut and a guide to things to do while you are there. This northern Arizona city is often overshadowed by another popular town: Sedona, which is an internationally recognized tourism destination known for its stunning red rock scenery, natural beauty and outdoor activities. However, U.S. News and World Report's ranking suggests Flagstaff is just as worthy of attention, with its own natural attractions and cultural scenery. Flagstaff is a charming mountain town of about 77,000 residents located about two hours and 15 minutes away from Phoenix, and about an hour and a half from the Grand Canyon. Surrounded by the world's largest ponderosa pine forest, Flagstaff boasts a storybook scenery, with a rustic, outdoorsy charm. It also enjoys a much different climate than most of Arizona due to its location in the mountains, with pleasant temperatures in the summer and snowy winters that cover town buildings and treetops with white blankets of snow, making for a postcard-perfect scenery. Flagstaff also has a handful of unique natural attractions, outdoor excursions and local eats. Here is a list of things you can do when you visit the city. Flagstaff and its surrounding area offer an abundance of activities to make your trip to the high country a memorable one. Here are some of the most popular things to do, including some budget-friendly options. : Scientists at this observatory famously discovered Pluto and revealed the expanding universe.
