Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports/ File Photo REUTERS U.S. Solheim Cup Captain Angela Stanford on Tuesday named major champion Paula Creamer as her second assistant captain for next year's Solheim Cup at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands. The 38-year-old Creamer, a 10-times winner on the LPGA Tour, will join Stanford and fellow assistant captain Kristy McPherson in leading a group of the top 12 American female golfers against Europe in the biennial team event. Creamer, who won the 2010 U.S. Women's Open, played on her first Solheim Cup team as an LPGA Tour rookie in 2005 at age 19, then the youngest player in the event's history. She also represented the U.S. in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 and her seven foursomes wins and 8-1/2 foursomes points are the most for any American player. "Wearing the Red, White and Blue has been an important part of my career. I have pledged to Angela to do whatever she needs me to do to help her and the U.S. team represent the United States well and ultimately retain the Cup for another two years," Creamer said. Stanford and Creamer were Solheim Cup teammates five times but were never paired together. They also served as assistants under Stacy Lewis at last year's Solheim Cup. "Paula's passion for her country and the Solheim Cup are infectious," said Stanford. "I truly enjoyed being Paula's teammate when we played on Solheim Cups and when we worked as assistants together in Virginia last year. The United States reclaimed the Solheim Cup last September in Gainesville, Virginia to stop Europe from capturing the trophy for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time. The next Solheim Cup will be held September 11-13, 2026 when the U.S. will be seeking their first road win since 2015. U.S. Solheim Cup captain Angela Stanford announces her first Assistant Captain selection

U.S. Solheim Cup Captain Angela Stanford has selected her first Assistant Captain. Kristy McPherson was announced Tuesday as the first assistant captain for the 2026 U.S. Solheim Cup squad. McPherson will assist Stanford in leading the Americans at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands. The 2026 Solheim Cup is set for Sept. 11-13, 2026. 'Kristy and I have been friends since 2006," Stanford said in a release. "We traveled and played on Tour together, and I was just always impressed with her attitude. It didn't matter what was going on around her or in her life. She showed up with a positive attitude and was always ready to give it her best. She's also extremely competitive and there are never any excuses from Kristy. "I know she can push me while also making sure that I am true to who I am, that I'm doing the right things for this team. She will hold me accountable for the decisions I'm going to make.' McPherson, who spent four years on the Epson Tour while winning twice and never missing a cut, joined the LPGA in 2007. She never won an LPGA event but had three runner-up finishes, including a tie for second at the Chevron Championship in 2009. McPherson went 1-3-0 for the U.S. in the 2009 Solheim Cup, which topped Europe 16 to 12 at Rich Harvest Farms outside Chicago. 'I am honored and proud to be named an assistant captain for the 2026 U.S. Solheim Cup Team. It's going to be so much fun,' McPherson said in a release. 'I'm so grateful to Angela for trusting me in this process and taking me on this journey with her. I can't wait to work with her over the next year and a half and I'm really looking forward to working with the team. "I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that when we head to the Netherlands in 2026, the Solheim Cup comes with us back to the United States.' At 11 years old, McPherson was diagnosed with Still's disease, a form of arthritis. It didn't hamper her golf career, as she played four years collegiately at South Carolina, where she captured seven victories. In 2003, she earned the Honda Inspiration Award, which is given to an athlete "who has overcome hardship and was able to return to play at the collegiate level.' Now, she'll help Stanford and the Americans in Europe next year. This article originally appeared on Golfweek: Solheim Cup 2026: Kristy McPherson named U.S. assistant captain

Happier on the course, Jennifer Kupcho shares lead after first round of Founders Cup

BRADENTON, Fla. — Jennifer Kupcho found more joy in golf in 2024 and she carried that into her first LPGA event this season, shooting a 6-under 65 on Thursday to share the first-round lead with Nanna Koerstz Madsen at the Founders Cup. Kupcho made the turn at 2 under and shot a bogey-free 4-under 31 on the back nine at Bradenton Country Club. She won three times in 2022, including a major at the Chevron Championship, and is winless since. Still, she feels like last season was her most consistent. 'I think really last year I kind of fell in love with the game more, so I think I'm just kind of like bringing that into this year,' Kupcho said. 'It's just a game, so really just trying to enjoy it and have fun.' Attitude was also key to Koerstz Madsen's strong 2025 debut. 'I think biggest key for me is to be good mentally out there, just stay happy, not let the bad shots get too much to your head, yeah,' she said. Lauren Coughlin, a teammate of Kupcho on last year's winning U.S. Solheim Cup squad, was one shot back along with Jin Hee Im and Angel Yin. 'I think a lot of it is just what I'm doing is working in a certain sense,' said Coughlin, a two-time winner in 2024. 'There are definitely still things I need to work on and get better, but a lot of what I do in my full swing, like I've been able to keep it strong for a really long time.' Playing in her Gulf Coast hometown, top-ranked Nelly Korda birdied the 18th hole and opened with a 68. She won a different tournament at Bradenton Country Club last year, the first of her seven wins in 2024. 'Actually it's such a big golf community. I think Florida as a as whole,' Korda said. 'I mean, there is just so much more to see here. You have beautiful Sarasota, Bradenton, Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island. It's kind of like a hidden gem.' Major champions Celine Boutier, Jin Young Ko and Jeongeun Lee6 were among the group at 4 under. Lexi Thompson, in this event after announcing last year that she planned to play a reduced schedule, opened with a 69 that might have been better if not for an unlucky deflection off the flagstick on the par-4 13th hole.
