Special Court directs former IAS officer Sagayam to appear through videolink
The Special Court dealing with Cases of Offences in Contravention of the provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act in Madurai on Monday directed former IAS officer U. Sagayam to appear through Video-Conference from City Civil Court in Chennai for the hearing in the cases related to the granite scam in Madurai district.
Special Court Judge N. Logeswaran directed that a letter be issued to the Principal District Judge, Chennai, to make arrangements in this regard and issued fresh summons to Mr. Sagayam. The court posted the matter for hearing on June 6. The court was hearing the cases related to the granite scam reported in Madurai district.
Earlier, the former IAS officer had written to the Special Public Prosecutor, Special Court for Mines and Minerals cases, stating that he was unable to appear before the Special Court to provide evidence in the cases. He had cited a threat to his life.
Mr. Sagayam said he was provided protection as per a High Court order due to threat to his life following his appointment as a Special Officer to probe the granite scam. However, it was withdrawn by the State. He said that withdrawal of security was unfair. Following the letter written by Mr. Sagayam, the Director General of Police had assured that adequate security, depending on the threats, would be provided to Mr. Sagayam, to enable him to appear before the Special Court.
