Government taluk hospital in Puttur will be upgraded in two phases for opening a medical college, says CM Siddaramaiah

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said here on Friday that the 100-bed taluk government hospital at Puttur will be upgraded to a 250-bed hospital in the first phase of the plan to open a new government medical college there. He addressed a gathering after inaugurating the new Praja Soudha, a complex that will house over 30 government offices, including the office of the Deputy Commissioner, at Padil in the city. Mr. Siddaramaiah said that another 250 beds will be added to the hospital in the second phase to open the medical college. He had announced the establishment of the medical college in the 2025-26 Budget. When it comes up, it will be the first government medical college in the coastal belt. Currently, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts together have eight private medical colleges. Of them, seven are in Dakshina Kannada alone. The CM said that, being a district of learned and educated people, communal violence in Dakshina Kannada should stop. The coastal district always stood ahead in the education sector. It should emerge as 'Sarva janangada shantiya thota' (A garden of peace for all communities). Tulu as second language Responding to legislators' demand that the State government recognise Tulu as the second language of the State after Kannada, Mr. Siddaramaiah said he would examine the matter. But Kannada will be supreme, he said. He said that Dakshina Kannada will soon emerge as a 'podi-free' district as all eligible people will get RTCs (Records of Rights, Tenancy and Crops), and errors in RTCs will be rectified. Taking on the critics who argued that the State government is left with no funds for taking up development projects as revenue has been diverted to its guarantee schemes, Mr. Siddaramaiah, whose Congress government will complete two years next week, said that it is not true. 'The State's capital expenditure was up by over ₹31,000 crores in a year,' he said, adding that it proves the critics wrong. The volume of the 2025-26 Budget was up by ₹38,000 crore, he said. Speaker U.T. Khader, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Urban Development Minister B. Suresh, Minister in charge of Dakshina Kannada Dinesh Gundu Rao, and Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta were present. Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath presided over.

Bengaluru to Welcome Global Lawmakers for Commonwealth Legislative Summit in September

Bengaluru: Bengaluru will play host to a major international parliamentary gathering in September, as over 300 Speakers, Deputy Speakers, and legislative leaders from across the Commonwealth are expected to convene for the Commonwealth Speakers' Conference, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader announced on Thursday. Scheduled to be held from September 8 to 10, the summit will be inaugurated by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and will be attended by key national dignitaries, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Vice-President of India and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'This is the first time such a large-scale conference of presiding officers from across Commonwealth nations is being held in Karnataka. It is a matter of honour for the state and our legislature,' Khader said, addressing journalists at the Vidhana Soudha. The conference, which will feature participants from national parliaments and state legislatures of Commonwealth member countries, is expected to delve into key issues concerning parliamentary functioning, democratic accountability, and inter-legislative collaboration. Discussions on digital transformation in governance, inclusivity in parliamentary procedures, and the strengthening of federal structures are likely to figure in the agenda. The event is being organised with the support of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), an international network that works to strengthen parliamentary democracy and promote best practices across member states. Preparations for logistics, hospitality, and security are already underway, Khader said, adding that the state government and the assembly secretariat are working in coordination to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. The three-day conclave is expected to not only promote Karnataka as a democratic hub but also offer a platform for cross-country legislative learning and cooperation.

No decision yet on revoking suspension of 18 BJP MLAs, says U.T. Khader

No decision has been taken yet on revoking suspension of 18 BJP MLAs for their unruly behaviour during the discussion on the Finance Bill on the last day of Budget session in the Legislative Assembly, Speaker U.T. Khader said in Mangaluru on Sunday. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Khader said the 18 MLAs were suspended for six months from the Legislative Assembly. They have also been barred from attending meetings of Legislative Assembly committees, which are extension of the Legislative Assembly. The action was taken to make legislators realise their mistake of behaving in an uncivilised manner in the Legislative Assembly. 'The action to suspend 18 MLAs was taken in the Legislative Assembly. I cannot independently decide on revoking their suspension. Deliberations are on. No decision has been taken yet on revoking their suspension,' he said. If the MLAs feel that the suspension is not correct, they are free to approach the court, he added. Mr. Khader said five MLAs had filed a petition questioning Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja's statements made outside the Assembly where he had criticised Mr. Khader over the suspension. 'Last week I referred this petition to the Committee on Privileges. The committee will deliberate upon it,' he said.

The event, 'Techwaves 2025: Rise of the Silicon Beach of India', presented by Vertex Workspace will be held at Vertex Five in Kadri at 4.30 p.m. It will witness gathering of industry leaders, tech pioneers and policymakers. Panel discussions There will be four panel discussions. The first session 'rise of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and their role in Mangaluru' will explore how Mangaluru is becoming a key player in the global GCC landscape, a sector poised to drive job creation and innovation. GCCs are specialized offices set up by multinational companies to provide services like IT, customer support, and research and development. These centers help companies reduce costs and tap into local talent. Mangaluru's strategic location, cost-effective environment and skilled workforce have attracted major international players such as NIDEC Advanced Technology and Bose Professional. With Karnataka's new GCC policy aiming to establish 500 new GCCs by 2029, Mangaluru is positioned to be a prime location for future expansion. The second session will be 'Rise of Deep Tech in Mangaluru'. With its strength in engineering and growing startup culture, Mangaluru is making strides in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital health technologies, and is emerging a hub for deep tech innovation. The third session will be 'Mangaluru's dominance in the IT services industry'. This panel will explore why Mangaluru is attracting IT giants and startups, thanks to its skilled workforce, quality of life, and operational efficiency. The fourth panel 'importance of world-class workspaces in Mangaluru's growth' will focus on modern managed workspaces. This discussion will highlight the city's infrastructure readiness to support tech talent. The event will also recognize emerging tech leaders, including Koki Kato (Kobayashi Create India), Takashi Miyasaka (NIDEC Advanced Technology), Jagath Biddappa and Navajith Karkera (Sonic Lamb), and UnifyCX, all of whom are contributing to Mangaluru's growing reputation as a global innovation hub, it said. Mangaluru's tech boom The city currently boasts around 20,000 IT jobs, with plans to increase that number to two lakh by 2033 - a tenfold rise expected to significantly boost the local economy. Karnataka's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is estimated to reach ₹28.83 lakh crore (approx. $331 billion), with Mangaluru contributing 5.5%, making it the second-largest contributor after Bengaluru, the release added. The city's IT sector alone generates over ₹3,000 crore annually, and its share of Karnataka's IT/BPO exports is expected to rise from 1.5% to 5% in the coming years. With over 10,000 engineers and more than 20,000 STEM graduates emerging annually from over 150 degree colleges and 25 engineering institutions, and supported by 15 plus incubation centers nurturing 125 plus startups, Mangaluru has a solid foundation for growth, it added. Furthermore, Mangaluru's operational costs are 20% lower than major metro cities, and its attrition rate is a mere 5%, compared to 18-25% in larger urban centers, making it an attractive destination for tech companies, the Vertex Workspace said.
