Belmont Contender Heart Of Honor Stretches Legs At Saratoga

Belmont Contender Heart Of Honor Stretches Legs At Saratoga originally appeared on Paulick Report. Jim And Claire Limited's Heart of Honor (GB), a last-out fifth in the Grade 1 Preakness, in his first U.S. start, visited the Saratoga main track Sunday under traveling assistant Jimmy McCarthy to stretch his legs for a start in Saturday's Grade 1, $2-million Belmont Stakes. Trained by Jamie Osborne, the Honor A. P. colt finished a close second in all three legs of the UAE Triple Crown—the Grade 3 UAE 2000 Guineas, Al Bastakiya (L), and Grade 2 UAE Derby -- including a nose second in the UAE Derby to Admire Daytona (JPN), who was subsequently unplaced in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby. 'He went a mile, building up into a three-quarter pace,' Osborne said. 'He didn't break any land-speed records, but that was never our intention. He looked to move well, and Jimmy McCarthy was pleased with the feel he gave him.' The British-bred $172,341 purchase at the 2024 Arqana Two-Year-Old Breeze Up Sale has banked $400,919 through a 2-4-0 record from seven starts. He will be piloted by Osborne's daughter, Saffie Osborne, in the Belmont Stakes. This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jun 1, 2025, where it first appeared.

Osborne takes Heart from Preakness run ahead of Belmont bid

Having recovered from a slow start to make some late headway behind Journalism in the middle leg of America's Triple Crown, the Jamie Osborne-trained colt will now head to Saratoga on June 7. 'He ran a good race considering the circumstances. He wasn't the quickest into stride and we were always slightly on the back foot against those sharper American horses, especially on a real pace-oriented track,' Saffie Osborne told Sky Sports Racing. 'But he ran with a lot of credit and hopefully onto Saratoga now for the Belmont. 'He hit the line really well and obviously you've got a bit more distance in the Belmont, which should help him.' Heart Of Honor made his first start at Southwell last October and then ran five times at Meydan, finishing a close second in the UAE Derby, before being pitched in at the deep end on his American debut. Osborne added: 'They are so tuned up at the gates and that's probably something that he's just lacking at the moment, but hopefully he can do a bit of homework and work on that in the next three weeks. 'Obviously, it was a tricky preparation for him, shipping back from Dubai, having been there for five months, and then being in England and acclimatising back to that and then shipping out to America last week. 'So, I'd like to think that three weeks' training on the dirt back at the track would just help bring him forward a little bit. 'He obviously stays out there but I'll probably go a couple of days before it, as it's a busy time here for us, so I don't want to be there too long, but I absolutely loved riding in America. 'Everyone was so welcoming and it was an amazing experience to be sat in the jockeys' room next to Irad Ortiz and Johnny Velazquez, it was a real sort of surreal moment. 'It was an honour and a privilege to be a part of it. 'The whole day was an amazing experience and I've never really walked away from a racecourse having finished fifth in a race and just looked back on the day and thought it was amazing. 'America and NBC and everyone put on an amazing show and the whole build-up to the race was incredible.'

Heart Of Honor takes fifth place as Journalism lands Preakness

Trained by her father Jamie, Heart Of Honor was twice a winner at Meydan during the winter months and tackled the second leg of the American Triple Crown after being beaten just a nose in last month's UAE Derby. Having her first ride in America, Osborne's mount slightly missed the break and raced towards the rear throughout the extended nine-furlong contest as Clever Again set the early pace, with Heart Of Honor eventually staying on at the finish to come home in fifth place. Journalism meanwhile was bidding to improve on his second place in the Kentucky Derby but it looked as though jockey Umberto Rispoli was not going to get a run at the top of the straight as Goal Oriented edged towards the rails and blocked his path. Rispoli's mount was sandwiched between that horse and Clever Again on the inside, but Journalism managed to regain his balance after getting a hefty bump before flying down the outside to deny Gosger on the line, with Sandman back in third. The winning jockey, who previously rode in his native Italy before moving to America, told NBC: 'I don't know if people realise what this horse did today, I got in trouble at the quarter pole and he made himself go again. It's all about him – it's a pleasure to ride a horse like him. 'I was in a tough spot (at the top of the straight) but it's unbelievable.' Winning trainer Michael McCarthy added: 'There was a lot of bouncing around there. I guess when I saw that I kind of resigned myself to the fact it was another fantastic effort and we'd maybe come up a little bit short, but it's testament to this horse. I couldn't be prouder of him. 'In the back of my mind I thought we would be two for two here, but (we) just happened to get one of these and they're very, very difficult races to win.'
