Dubai Launches PhD Programme in Artificial Intelligence at AI Week
Dubai has announced its first-ever PhD programme in Artificial Intelligence, marking a major step in advancing AI education in the region. The University of Birmingham Dubai revealed the programme during Dubai AI Week 2025. The launch was witnessed by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. He is also the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Dubai Future Foundation. This initiative supports the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. It also aligns with Dubai's vision to become a global hub for technology and innovation. According to H.H. Sheikh Hamdan, education plays a vital role in shaping the future. He stated that such initiatives help prepare talent that will support Dubai's long-term digital goals. The new PhD programme will focus on areas like smart cities, healthcare, sustainability, and future mobility. These sectors are key to Dubai's transformation. The launch was also attended by Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence. He is also Deputy Managing Director of the Dubai Future Foundation. Dubai AI Week 2025 is hosted by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence. The event runs from April 21 to 25 and features global experts, startups, and tech leaders. The PhD programme is fully accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education's Commission for Academic Accreditation. It aims to build local talent and encourage ethical, impactful AI development. Students will explore topics such as AI for medicine, computer vision, natural language processing, and AI ethics. They will also gain access to research labs, incubators, and government-led projects. Developed with the UAE National Program for Artificial Intelligence, the initiative aims to equip future generations with advanced skills for the AI era. Dubai continues to take bold steps to strengthen its role in the global AI landscape.
