Doctoral candidates shine in Marrakech's «My Thesis in 180 Seconds» competition
On Tuesday in Marrakech, around 12 doctoral candidates competed in the final round of the 2025 edition of «My Thesis in 180 Seconds», organized by Cadi Ayyad University (UCA). These finalists were selected from about sixty doctoral students who initially expressed interest in the competition and received training focused on personal development, scientific rigor, and enhancing the value of their research. This support helped the young researchers strengthen their skills in synthesis, eloquence, and scientific communication. During the final, each participant delivered a three-minute presentation in French to a diverse audience, accompanied by a single slide. The challenge of the competition lies in presenting complex research clearly, concisely, and convincingly in simple terms. To help the candidates succeed, UCA's Doctoral Studies Center, along with several trainers, provided guidance throughout the process. At the conclusion of the competition, two candidates were chosen to represent Cadi Ayyad University at the national final later this month. The winner of the national final will qualify for the international final, scheduled for September 30th in Romania. Organized to popularize and promote scientific culture among the general public, the international Francophone competition «My Thesis in 180 Seconds» (MT180S) aims to strengthen young researchers' scientific and interpersonal communication skills. The contest is open to doctoral candidates from all disciplines who are currently enrolled or have defended their thesis during the academic year.

Search continues for suspect wanted in UCA campus shooting
HAZEN, Ark. – A search is underway across central Arkansas this Memorial Day weekend as authorities continue looking for a suspect wanted in connection with a shooting on the University of Central Arkansas campus. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Zion Jackson, has eluded Hazen police twice and is now facing a growing list of charges, says the police chief. Conway police detail arrests, warrants in recent shootings According to Hazen police, what began as a routine traffic stop on May 10 quickly escalated into a dangerous pursuit that spanned the city and has kept law enforcement on high alert. The incident started around 8:45 p.m. when an officer pulled over a vehicle in the Family Dollar and Dollar Tree parking lot on Highway 63. Body camera footage shows the interaction beginning calmly before Jackson became visibly nervous. When questioned, Jackson expressed fear, referencing his race. 'You're just starting to get real nervous over your ID,' the officer is heard saying. 'Yeah man, I'm Black and I don't… you know what I'm saying?' Jackson replied. 'What does that have to do with anything?' the officer asked. 'I'm scared, bro,' Jackson responded. Police say the officer smelled marijuana and began identifying passengers in the vehicle. Hazen Police Chief Bradley Taylor said Jackson initially gave a false name. When officers discovered a gun in the car, Jackson fled on foot. Students at UCA and people in Conway react to the news of college campus shooting Authorities later confirmed his identity and discovered he was wanted in connection to an April 19 shooting on the UCA campus in Conway. Jackson was already facing charges of felony first-degree battery and felony terroristic act. But the chase didn't end there. Later that night, authorities said Jackson was spotted again, this time behind the wheel of a stolen City of Hazen truck equipped with a mosquito sprayer. 'You could see the mosquito sprayer in the back of the truck,' Taylor said. 'The city is the only one that has those.' Officers attempted a tactical vehicle intervention after pursuing and reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour through residential streets. Once again, Jackson fled on foot and escaped the perimeter police set up. Authorities believe Jackson then stole a second vehicle, described as an older model black Chevrolet truck. That vehicle was last seen in Searcy on May 18. Both the truck and Jackson remain missing. Taylor said Jackson is considered armed and dangerous. 'We are working with the U.S. Marshals and the Conway Police Department, trying to track Mr. Jackson down,' he said. How an interim coach led Central Arkansas men's golf to its first conference championship
How an interim coach led Central Arkansas men's golf to its first conference championship Josh Turnock wasn't blindsided by the news. An assistant coach for the Central Arkansas men's golf team, Turnock has spoken with head coach Jay Rees toward the end of the fall season when Rees, an accomplished coach at numerous stops during his career, first mentioned he was considering stepping away. With family back home having health issues, Reese wasn't sure whether he'd be able to finish the season. Right before Christmas. Rees made it official and stepped down. That left Turnock, a graduate assistant, as the lone coach on staff. "I graduated with my MBA in December of last year, and so I was just planning on going to finding a job, you know, using the MBA and going down that route," Turnock said. "But obviously, once Jay retired, the (UCA) athletic director came to me and asked me if I'd consider doing it. More: 2025 NCAA men's college golf conference championship dates and results "I thought about it a little bit and actually had a couple of job offers, other jobs related to business. In the end, decided to take the interim role." Turnock didn't accept the interim title until about three days before the start of the spring semester, he said. And it has been an adjustment. Rees has offered help where he can, but for Turnock, who played collegiately at UCA before spending three semesters as a graduate assistant, the differences are drastic. "I didn't realize how much there was to do being head coach," Turnock said. "It's been different, but I've enjoyed it. This semester has just gone very quickly." Central Arkansas placed second at the Gulf Coast Collegiate, Turnock's second event as interim coach, and added a couple more top-five finishes heading into the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The Bears had a stellar opening round, shooting the third-lowest score in ASUN Championship history with a 271. That was tied for second in program history, too. Then UCA held on in the second and third round, with junior Noah Blaickner pouring in a par putt on the closing hole to secure a one-shot win over Stetson. The victory was UCA's first ASUN Conference title in school history and the first conference title since claiming the AIC Championship in 1972. It locked up a spot in NCAA Regionals, too, with the Bears finding out their destination Wednesday. "I think most of us still can't believe it," Turnock said. "Going into the week, we were ranked the nine seed in the conference, but went in kind of believing we had a good chance to win it because the guys struggled in the fall. They didn't play as well, didn't really show kind of how good of players they were. Our ranking doesn't show how good we are as a team. So we always had belief that we had a good chance of winning it. UCA's lineup is comprised of three juniors and two freshman, all new faces after last season's starting five either graduated or hit the transfer portal. Turnock mentioned how the team was more nervous teeing off in the opening round of the ASUN Championship than it was day two or three, when they grasped to the lead. Come Wednesday, the Bears will have a watch party to see which NCAA Regional they'll head to. In the meantime, it's business as usual for a team that has had a year unlike most others. "I've enjoyed it a lot," Turnock said. "The guys make it a lot easier with with how hard they work and how well we've been playing this semester, it makes my job a lot easier. So I've enjoyed it a lot. It's been hard at some times, but with how hard the guys work every day, it's nice to see that pay off."
