Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin opens up on secret chats with Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of Scottish Cup final with Celtic

The Swede will experience the Hampden showpiece when his side face Celtic on Saturday. Fergie won the trophy four times during his eight-year stint at Pittodrie — and the Dons have lifted it only once in 39 years since he left for Manchester United in 1986. Thelin knows he could make history by ending the Dons' 35-year wait for the world's oldest football trophy. And while he embraces the links to the past, the challenge is for his team to create a chapter of their own. Thelin revealed: 'Sir Alex has been in touch and I have had some advice. "He's a really nice gentleman and it's good to talk to him sometimes. 'It would be nice to follow in his footsteps. 'You can always use history in different ways, but you can't carry the weight from the past. 'You have to try to create a new story and focus on this. 'That's what it was then and it was incredible, but we are trying to push for a good future. 'That's why we said we're trying to build a stronger team for every season and nothing has changed there. Awkward moment Andy Halliday left hanging by Jimmy Thelin after Aberdeen v Motherwell handshakes 'Now, in this moment, we are in the final in the first year and we're going to try to do something good with the time we have here.' Thelin, his family and friends are well aware of the Cup's importance and what it means to lift it. He's been inundated with messages of support from back home in Sweden. He said: 'The Scottish Cup is the oldest competition, that's what people know. They think it's an amazing moment. 'Everybody, of course, is wishing me luck and our players luck. 'It's easy to take things for granted. It's eight years since we were in the Scottish Cup final. 'You can end up in the final, but you can't promise things. We can't do more than the best we can do and hopefully that's going to help us win it. 'We know we have a really good opponent, but a final is a final.' Several Dons could make their final appearances, with Jack MacKenzie set to depart for England. Loan stars Kevin Nisbet, Oday Dabbagh, Alfie Dorrington and Jeppe Okkels will also move back to their parent clubs. But with legendary status dangling in front of them, Thelin has urged them to grab it. He said: 'It can be the last opportunity for some. 'So many things happen in a team in one year. 'I saw videos from my first weeks here and it's incredible how much has happened. Even players who have come and left, it's a lot and it's gone so quick. 'Don't take things for granted because football is quite a long career, but it's also a short one. You never know what's happening in the future. 'Sometimes you get injuries, sometimes you go to another club that is really good but can't have this level to reach finals. 'So catch this moment, that's the message.' United lost a drab match despite, as soccer finance expert Kieran Maguire noted on Thursday, having higher revenue than Tottenham and spending 64% more on wages for a more expensively acquired squad of players. Tottenham also beat United twice in the Premier League this season, and in the domestic League Cup. 'If I was teaching this at management school (I) would conclude that there is something seriously wrong with the culture of the organization … which is set by senior management,' Maguire wrote on X. Beyond the loss of sporting opportunities and reputational prestige, the club owned by the Glazer family from the United States and British billionaire industrialist Jim Ratcliffe has short and longer-term financial hits ahead. No Champions League play next season is an instant loss of at least 80 million euros ($90 million), and approaching 150 million euros ($169 million) for a run deep into the knockout stage. United also misses out on the 4 million euros ($4.5 million) Tottenham will get from UEFA for playing the Super Cup against the Champions League titleholder — either Inter Milan or Paris Saint-Germain — on Aug. 13 at Udinese's stadium in Italy. The winner gets a bonus of 1 million euros ($1.1 million). After failing to qualify for the 2025 Club World Cup — which has a $1 billion prize fund from FIFA and should pay more than $100 million to a successful European team — United is now far behind in qualifying for the 2029 edition. European teams qualify for the FIFA event only by being in the Champions League, either winning the title or building consistent results over four seasons. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. United already will miss the entire first half of the 2024-28 qualifying period, and it is hard to project the team that last won the Premier League 12 years ago both qualifying for and then winning a Champions League title within three years. One clear solution to growing financial issues and the ability to comply with Premier League rules is selling the club's best players, like captain Bruno Fernandes and out-of-favor forward Marcus Rashford, or its homegrown prospects. Some already earn high wages which are problematic for potential buyers. A talent drain risks speeding a spiral of decline on and off the field if coach Ruben Amorim is left trying to rebuild with a weaker pool of players. While United is still one of Europe's highest-earning clubs, UEFA's annual research shows its advantage is in decline, even though revenue was a club record 661.8 million pounds ($887 million) last year. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. A UEFA chart showed that over five years from 2019-24 _ pre-COVID-19 through to the post-pandemic recovery in the soccer industry — United's revenue grew at a slower rate than all of its biggest English rivals except Chelsea. Revenue now risks dropping, and another income cut is coming from falling to 16th in the Premier League standings with one round left on Sunday. Premier League prize money based on final position in the standings means dropping from eighth a year ago to 16th is a difference of 22 million pounds ($29.5 million) less. It all adds up to another loss-making season after a 113.2 million pounds ($152) deficit last season. The three previous years totaled losses of 236 million pounds ($316 million). This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The league's profit and sustainability rules (PSR) allow clubs to lose 105 million pounds ($140.7 million) over a three-year period or face sanctions, though United can cite some exemptions. Ratcliffe, who has operational control despite being a minority shareholder, is already the public face of unpopular cuts to jobs and staff benefits, and rising ticket prices for fans. 'This is not sustainable,' the club told fans in January, 'and if we do not act now we are in danger of failing to comply with PSR/FFP (financial fair play) requirements in future years and significantly impacting our ability to compete on the pitch.' Man United Starting XI vs Tottenham Hotspur: Confirmed Team News and Predicted Linuep
Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Key Selection Decisions Ahead of UEFA Europa League Final Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are set for a seismic showdown in Bilbao, with the UEFA Europa League trophy on the line. For Ruben Amorim, this isn't just a final, it's a test of trust — in form, in fitness and in his own instincts. Advertisement Fresh injury returns have made Amorim's task both easier and harder. The return of several important names provides depth, but it also forces crucial decisions in a match where margins are slim and the stakes immeasurable. Amorim's Dilemma in Defence The big story this week has been the unexpected return of Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot to first-team training. While it's unlikely all three will start, their inclusion in the travelling squad signals just how close they are to full recovery. Yoro, in particular, presents a selection conundrum. At just 19, he's shown composure beyond his years and was central to United's semi-final progress. Yet his foot injury kept him out of the final league game against Chelsea. If fit, he would slot into Amorim's favoured back-three alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf. Luke Shaw remains a solid alternative but lacks Yoro's aerial presence. Photo IMAGO Diogo Dalot's situation is more straightforward. Out for six matches with an ankle injury, it's too soon for him to start. That leaves the right wing-back slot in contention between Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo. Diallo, though typically more attack-minded, has impressed when filling in deeper. His energy and directness could be vital in exploiting space down the flank against Spurs. Advertisement Mazraoui is the more experienced option and can play on either side. However, Patrick Dorgu's form on the left has likely locked that position, leaving Mazraoui's best chance of involvement on the bench. Midfield Engine Room Firmly Set In midfield, Amorim has consistently favoured the steel and balance of Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro. The Brazilian, rested early against Chelsea, will be central to United's efforts to disrupt Tottenham's rhythm. Bruno Fernandes, as ever, will orchestrate in the final third, taking one of the two attacking midfield roles. The question remains: who partners him? Mount vs Garnacho: Two Styles, One Spot Alejandro Garnacho has been a consistent presence in United's run to the final. The Argentine winger started every knockout match but was benched for the last two Premier League games. Amorim appears to be managing his minutes carefully. Advertisement Mason Mount, on the other hand, is peaking at the right time. He's started United's last three matches and replaced Garnacho in the second leg of the semi-final. Amorim must now decide whether to go with Mount's work rate and vision or Garnacho's directness and flair. 'The ex-Chelsea playmaker replaced Garnacho in the semi-final second leg,' the report reminds us, which could hint at Amorim's current thinking. Photo IMAGO Either way, the one not picked could be crucial off the bench, especially if the final goes deep into extra time. Rasmus Højlund to Lead the Line Despite Zirkzee's surprise return, it's difficult to see past Rasmus Højlund as United's starting striker. He's been the focal point for much of the campaign, and match rhythm is likely to trump late fitness in Amorim's mind. Zirkzee's inclusion on the bench does offer a useful wildcard should the game demand a change in tempo or shape. Advertisement Predicted Manchester United XI (3-4-2-1): Onana; Lindelöf, Maguire, Yoro; Amad, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu; Fernandes, Mount; Højlund. Injured: Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt Kick-off: 8pm BST, Wednesday 21 May 2025 Venue: San Mamés Stadium, Bilbao TV Coverage: TNT Sports, Discovery+ As Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur prepare for their date with destiny, squad depth and tactical flexibility could prove decisive. Amorim has the tools at his disposal. Now, it's about making the right call at the right moment.

Manchester United vs Tottenham: Key players to watch in the 2025 UEFA Europa League Final
The stage is set for an electrifying UEFA Europa League Final as Manchester United face off against Tottenham Hotspur this Wednesday at the stunning San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao. While both English clubs have struggled in the Premier League this season, finishing near the relegation zone, this European showdown offers a much-needed shot at redemption—and a direct ticket to next season's UEFA Champions League. With silverware and pride on the line, let's take a look at the key players to watch who could make the difference in this high-stakes clash. 1. Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) Despite a difficult season for the Red Devils, Fernandes has remained a consistent creative outlet. As club captain, his leadership, vision, and knack for unlocking defenses will be crucial under the new managerial setup that has gradually brought more stability and purpose to the side. 2. Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur) Tottenham's top scorer and talisman, Son brings pace, flair, and clinical finishing to the front line. The South Korean forward is known for stepping up in big matches, and his experience will be crucial against a vulnerable United backline. 3. Rasmus Højlund (Manchester United) The young Danish striker has found form late in the season, particularly in European competition. His strength, aerial ability, and instinctive finishing could be a major threat to a Tottenham defense that has shown signs of vulnerability under pressure. 4. Micky van de Ven (Tottenham Hotspur) Fast, strong, and composed under pressure, Van de Ven has been a standout in Tottenham's backline. With Manchester United's attack looking to find rhythm, Van de Ven's defensive contributions will be crucial to keep the Red Devils at bay. 5. Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United) Garnacho brings unpredictability, pace, and youthful exuberance. Known for his flair and willingness to take on defenders, he can stretch the pitch and create chaos in Tottenham's defensive third. 6. Yves Bissouma (Tottenham Hotspur) The engine of the midfield, Bissouma's defensive work rate and ball-recovery skills will be pivotal in disrupting United's transitions. If he can dominate the center of the park, Spurs will gain a critical edge. Manchester UnitedTottenham Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication .
