The North Carolina Tar Heels failed to close out their Chapel Hill Regional on Sunday night against Oklahoma, losing 9-5 and now facing elimination in a winner-take-all game later Monday.
Aidan Haugh struck out six Sooners (38-21) on the mound for UNC (44-13), but struggled with control and walked four more. It took Haugh – North Carolina's number three starter – 102 pitches to get through 3 2/3 innings.
The Diamond Heels struggled big-time in the field. UNC fielders committed just two errors, but those led to four unearned runs for Oklahoma. Sooner pitchers kept North Carolina in the game, particularly late, but the Diamond Heels couldn't score once with bases loaded – and no outs – in the eighth inning.
We don't know when UNC and Oklahoma will play on Monday yet, but given it's a winner-take-all matchup, there's a strong possibility the Boshamer Stadium lights will be on.
North Carolina wants ace Jake Knapp on the mound, but pitching him on two days' rest wouldn't be a great idea. The same goes for the Sooners, who'll want ace Kyson Witherspoon on the mound, but both programs want their aces fresh for potential Super Regional berths.
Regardless of who the Diamond Heels throw out there Monday, they can't combine for nine walks, which proved to be a huge difference-maker in Sunday's loss. Oklahoma pitchers only walked five UNC batters – and, while it almost proved costly late, Oklahoma's pitchers regained control to escape jams.

There's no doubt this year's UNC baseball team exceeded expectations up to Monday's winner-take-all game in the Chapel Hill Regional. The Diamond Heels replaced their entire starting outfield, sport a new-look bullpen and generate their offense from small ball.
Oklahoma can hit, just like North Carolina, but lacks the starting pitching in comparison. The Sooners' bullpen has a slight advantage, though, with Monday's game shaping up to be a bullpen game for both teams.
UNC's hitters, outside of Gavin Gallaher, need to figure it out or they're going home dejected Monday night. Oklahoma has the momentum and, in an NCAA Tournament already full of upsets, pulls off another one in Chapel Hill.
