Djokovic achieves 100-win milestone at French Open
Paris, June 2 (UNI) Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic cruised past Britain's Cameron Norrie to secure his 100th singles victory at the French Open on Monday. The 38-year-old triumphed 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the 16th consecutive year. "It's a very pretty number, but 101 victories sound better," said Djokovic. "I will continue to search for another victory, it's clearly not finished for me here. I'm very honored to make history in this sport, which has given me everything in my life." Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarterfinals for the seventh time in eight years after Dutch opponent Tallon Griekspoor retired with an abdominal injury while trailing 6-4, 3-0. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner swept 17th seed Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. The Italian, who is chasing his third consecutive Grand Slam title, will next face Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik. "I'm very, very happy, because things can go quickly in a bad way, especially in best of five," Sinner said in his on-court interview. "They can go so long, so I'm very happy to finish in three. Night sessions here in Paris are always amazing, so thank you all for coming." On the women's side, 22-year-old French wildcard Lois Boisson, ranked No. 361 in the world, staged an impressive comeback to defeat third seed Jessica Pegula 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, becoming the first Frenchwoman to reach the Roland Garros last eight since 2017. "For the match point, I really felt very tense, and when I saw that my forehand was a winner, well, the whole pressure went off," Boisson said. "I was just so happy to win and to be able to play the quarterfinals." Elsewhere, American star Coco Gauff beat Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-0, 7-5 to set up an all-American quarterfinal clash with Australian Open champion Madison Keys. China's Paris Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen is scheduled to face top seed Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday on center court. Meanwhile, Zhang Shuai of China and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador advanced to the mixed doubles semifinals, marking Zhang's first-ever appearance in the final four of the Roland Garros mixed doubles. Daniel Noboa sworn in as Ecuadorian president
Quito, May 24 (UNI) Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa was sworn in Saturday for his first full term during a ceremony at the National Assembly in Quito. The 37-year-old businessman, who won the reelection in April, had just completed an initial 18-month term after winning snap elections in late 2023. His new term will run through 2029. Noboa pledged to bring a new approach to governance. "We came to break cycles," he said, emphasizing the need for lasting change. "There will be no truce with crime," he said, vowing to continue crackdowns on drug trafficking, illegal weapons and smuggling. He reaffirmed his hardline security stance under the "internal armed conflict" declared during his first term. The president also outlined plans to spur economic growth through reforms, investment and job creation, while highlighting housing, education, energy diversification and public works as key pillars of his administration. Vice President Maria Jose Pinto also took the oath of office during the session. UNI XINHUA AKT SSP

Djokovic wins 100th ATP title at Geneva Open
Geneva, May 24 (UNI) Novak Djokovic won his 100th ATP title on Saturday after beating Hubert Hurkacz 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) in the Geneva Open final. The victory was also the first for the world No. 6 after winning the gold medal at last summer's Paris Olympics, boosting the 38-year-old Serbian's confidence ahead of the French Open, which begins on Sunday. Djokovic became the third man in the Open Era to win 100 titles behind Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103). Competing as a wildcard, Djokovic was broken once in the first set and found himself down to his Polish opponent. He fought back in the second set and won the tiebreak to level the game, and continued his momentum for another tiebreak win for the title. Saturday's victory was a great payback for Djokovic's failed efforts in the finals in Shanghai and Miami, and the men's Grand Slam record champion is ready for his first-round match against American Mackenzie McDonald in Paris early next week.
