Palestinian, Egyptian presidents urge immediate end to Israeli Gaza offensive

Baghdad, May 17 (UNI) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday urged an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Speaking at the 34th Arab League Summit held in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday, Abbas called on the summit to adopt an Arab plan to halt Israeli military operations and achieve peace in the region. Abbas underscored that an enduring peace can only be achieved through ending the Israeli occupation and ensuring the full rights of the Palestinian people. Sisi, for his part, condemned the "systematic atrocities and unspeakable violence" inflicted on the Palestinians in Gaza over the past 19 months, saying these acts aim to "obliterate" the population. He called on the international community, especially the United States, to take vigorous steps to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Egyptian president also reiterated Egypt's commitment to convening an international conference for Gaza's early recovery and reconstruction once hostilities cease. Following up on the summit, the Hamas-run media office in Gaza on Saturday called on the attendees to take practical action and adopt bold positions to break the "unjust blockade imposed on Gaza and stop the daily killing." It urged mounting pressure on Israel to ensure the immediate and unconditional opening of the crossings and ensure the flow of food, humanitarian aid, and medical assistance to the people of Gaza, who are now facing the threat of starvation. Also condemning Israeli hostilities in the region, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, when addressing the summit, called for action from the international community to end Israeli assaults within Lebanon, which violate the understandings reached between the two sides in late November last year. "We call upon you, dear brothers, to pressure the international community to compel Israel to end its aggressions and fully withdraw from all Lebanese territories," Salam said. The summit has witnessed the participation of leaders and top diplomats of 22 Arab League member states, as well as representatives from regional and International organizations. It marks the second such event hosted by Iraq since the 2003 U.S. invasion, following a previous one in 2012. UNI XINHUA GNK

Zelensky signs law on natural resources deal ratification

Kiev, May 12 (UNI) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday signed the law ratifying a natural resources deal with the United States, which would establish a joint investment fund for Ukraine's reconstruction, according to the parliament's website. "The implementation of the Agreement will ensure the further development of economic cooperation between Ukraine and the U.S.," said the explanatory note to the law. The agreement to establish the fund, which will be partially financed by new royalties on Ukraine's mineral resources, gas and oil, was signed on April 30 in Washington by Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. According to Svyrydenko, both countries will co-manage and co-finance the fund, while Ukraine would maintain ownership and complete control over its mineral and energy resources. The Ukrainian parliament supported ratification of the agreement last week. The deal will enter into force after the exchange of diplomatic notes between Ukraine and the United States confirming the completion of both countries' internal procedures. UNI XINHUA GNK

Xi calls on China, Russia to maintain strategic resolve, coordination

Moscow, May 9 (UNI) Chinese President Xi Jinping said Thursday that China and Russia should maintain strategic resolve and coordination as the world is entering a new period of turbulence and transformation. Xi made the remarks during a chat over tea with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the president's office of the Kremlin in Moscow. As long as China and Russia maintain strategic resolve and coordination, no force can stop the two countries from achieving their respective development and revitalization, no force can shake the strong foundation of long-standing friendship between the two peoples, and no force can hold back the prevailing trend toward a multipolar world and economic globalization, said Xi. Xi also voiced readiness to stay in close communication with Putin to chart the course for China-Russia relations and make contributions to advancing global governance. For his part, Putin said that Russia and China have always stood together in solidarity and supported each other, forging an unbreakable friendship.
