1 killed in Israeli strike on south Lebanon
Israel has continued to strike Lebanon despite a ceasefire that took effect on Nov 27. (AP pic) BEIRUT : Lebanon's health ministry said an Israeli strike on the south of the country today killed one person, the third deadly raid in four days despite a ceasefire with Hezbollah. The ministry said an 'Israeli enemy' strike targeted a motorcycle in the village of Arnoun, in the Nabatieh region about 5km from the Israeli border. Farther south, another strike hit a car in Beit Lif, in the Bint Jbeil area, wounding one person, the ministry said. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. Israel has continued to strike Lebanon despite the ceasefire that took effect on Nov 27, ending more than a year of conflict – including two months of open war – with resistance group Hezbollah, which emerged severely weakened. On Thursday, two people were killed in Israeli strikes on the south, and another died in a raid yesterday. Under the truce terms, Hezbollah fighters were to withdraw north of the Litani River, about 30km from the border, and dismantle their military posts to the south. Israel, for its part, was to pull all its troops out of Lebanon but has maintained five positions it deems 'strategic' along the frontier. The Lebanese army has since deployed in those areas, where it is the only force allowed to operate alongside UN peacekeepers.

UNIFIL Commander: Situation Along the Blue Line Remains Unpredictable
The commander of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon has said that the situation on the Lebanese-Israeli border 'remains tense and unpredictable' as Israel continued its daily violations of the ceasefire. In honor of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, UNIFIL hosted on Thursday a ceremony at its Naqoura headquarters attended by members of the Lebanese Army, security services, local political and religious authorities, ambassadors, and UN officials. 'The situation along the Blue Line remains tense and unpredictable, with repeated violations and a high risk of miscalculation," Head of Mission and Force Commander Lieutenant-General Aroldo Lázaro warned. "Through our liaison and coordination mechanisms, we offer a channel for dialogue and de-escalation helping to build the foundation for a possible solution," he said. Emphasizing the need for a political process, the UNIFIL head noted that "the path to peace in southern Lebanon is political." "We must all work to create the right conditions for a long-term, sustainable solution," he said. "One important step in recent months has been the significant deployment of more LAF (Lebanese Army) soldiers to the south,' the UNIFIL chief stated. 'Their presence as the sole providers of state authority and security must be preserved and for that, help from international partners needs to be maintained,' he added. During the ceremony, Lázaro and Lebanese Army Commander representative Brigadier General Nicola Tabet laid wreaths in tribute to fallen peacekeepers. Over 4,400 UN peacekeepers have lost their lives on missions around the world since 1948, including more than 330 since UNIFIL was established in 1978. The ceremony was held as Israel continued to violate the US-brokered ceasefire agreement that brought the latest war between Israel and Hezbollah to an end in late November. An Israeli drone strike killed on Thursday a municipal worker in southern Lebanon, the state-run National News Agency said. The man was on his way to work on a well supplying water to homes when he was killed in the town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa, NNA said. Lebanon's Health Ministry also reported one person killed in the strike.

International UN Peacekeepers Day: Pakistan remembers 181 of its own lost in line of duty
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan joined the international community in celebrating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers today, Thursday, the prime minister's office said in a message, paying tribute to 181 Pakistanis who had been killed in the line of duty. The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, May 29, is 'an international day to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.' 'In the seven-decade history of UN peacekeeping missions, more than 235,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have rendered distinguished service in 48 UN missions around the world,' PM Shehbaz Sharif said in a message. '181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the eternal sacrifice of their lives in achieving international peace and security.' Sharif said the international day was an opportune occasion to review the many challenges facing UN peacekeeping, such as increasingly unilateral policies, financial sanctions, growing threats to the safety and security of UN peacekeepers, targeting of UN peacekeeping operations based on disinformation, and the destabilizing effects of new and emerging technologies. In an effort to address these challenges, Pakistan, along with the Republic of Korea, co-hosted the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Islamabad last month with the theme, 'Towards a Safer and More Effective Peace: Using Technology and an Integrated Approach'. Pakistan also hosts the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, tasked with monitoring the ceasefire along the Line of Control in the UN-recognized disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The date, May 29, for the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, marks the anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in 1948 to monitor the ceasefire after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which was the first ever UN peacekeeping mission.

Israeli strike on south Lebanon kills one: Ministry
Lebanon 's health ministry said an Israeli strike on south Lebanon killed one man on Tuesday, the latest attack despite a ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. In a statement, the ministry said an 'Israeli enemy strike' on a motorcycle killed one man in Yater, in south Lebanon's Bint Jbeil district. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the attack, which came after it said it killed a Hezbollah member in south Lebanon's Majdal Zoun on Monday. Israel has continued to launch strikes on its northern neighbor despite the November truce that sought to halt more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah, including two months of full-blown war. Under the terms of the ceasefire deal, only UN peacekeepers and the Lebanese army should be deployed in southern Lebanon, though Israel has kept its forces in five areas it has declared strategic. Lebanon has called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its attacks and withdraw all its troops.
