Online racket selling fake high security numberplates busted, 2 held
New Delhi: The cyber cell of Delhi Police has arrested two persons and busted a racket involved in selling fake high security registration plates (HSRP) through fraudulent websites.
The accused were identified as Rishabh Gupta (25) and Kapil Tyagi (35), both residents of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
According to police, the accused created the websites claiming to offer HSRP booking services. "These deceptive websites featured UPI-QR codes linked to bank accounts. Victims from across the country were misled into making advance payments, thinking that they were securing legitimate numberplates," said an officer.
The accused used forged identities to open multiple bank accounts and procure SIM cards. Each time a fraudulent website or QR code was detected and blocked, they created new ones to continue their operations. "They distributed the defrauded amounts across several bank accounts, which were used in rotation," said the officer. "The accused operated the racket through several mobile devices and other tools as well to evade being detected," he added.

Police first arrested Gupta, who said the websites were promoted through paid advertisements to appear prominently in Google search results. He added that the funds collected through these platforms were funnelled into mule accounts under the syndicate's control and later withdrawn in cash. Gupta's interrogation led police to Tyagi. Police seized various digital devices, including five mobile phones, a laptop, nine debit cards, a bank passbook and multiple QR codes on the devices.
