UPM Bintulu holds training programme on microbiology lab practice, safety, compliance

The participants fully immersed in the hands-on session, conducted during the 'Good Microbiology Laboratory Practice' training at the UPMKB. BINTULU (May 27): Forty participants comprising international experts, technical staff and students of Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) took part in the 'Good Microbiology Laboratory Practice' training recently. Organised by the Department of Animal Science and Fisheries, Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences of UPMKB, the programme meant to enhance compliance with laboratory safety, strengthen mastery of basic microbiological procedures, and expand international collaboration networks. It was conducted in two segments: a morning online session, and an afternoon physical session. Associate Professor Dr Leong Sui Sien, also the programme chairperson, opened the morning session with insights from her work in Türkiye, while Dr Suhaili Mustafa addressed global anti-microbial resistance challenges. International speakers, Associate Professor Dr Aidil Khan and Dr Nasreen from Pakistan, further enriched the dialogue with talks on antibiotic resistance and tick-borne diseases. In the afternoon, participants rolled up their sleeves for the hands-on session, led by Dr Leong. From mastering aseptic techniques to conducting Gram staining and bacterial culturing, participants honed critical microbiological skills deemed as being essential in both academic and professional settings. 'This programme was a significant platform for our students and staff to build not only technical competence but also international networks. 'It reflects our commitment to nurturing talent and driving scientific innovation,' said Dr Masnindah Malahubban, head of the Department of Animal Science and Fisheries. She said the participants left the training not only better equipped for lab work, but also inspired by the spirit of cross-border collaboration and knowledge exchange.
