Three dead as pest control plane crashes in Mexico

TUXTLA GUTIÉRREZ, MEXICO: A small airplane from Guatemala involved in fighting an outbreak of flesh-eating larvae crashed in southern Mexico on Friday, killing three people, authorities said. The aircraft came down in the southernmost Chiapas state while releasing sterile screwworm flies to combat a pest that prompted the United States to suspend livestock imports from Mexico last month. Two Guatemalan pilots and a Mexican crew member were killed in the crash, aviation authorities said. Mexico and the United States are working together to try to contain the outbreak of the screwworm fly, whose larvae can kill cattle. President Donald Trump's administration complained in April that Mexico was restricting US-contracted planes involved in the effort to operating six days a week instead of seven. Washington also accused Mexican authorities of imposing 'substantial import duties' on aviation parts, equipment and sterile fly shipments. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called the US livestock import suspension 'unfair' and said she hoped that it would be lifted soon.

Gaza aid centers close temporarily as shooting of civilians draws global outrage

Humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza faced a fresh setback on Wednesday after the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) announced the temporary closure of its centers, citing a need for 'renovation, reorganisation and efficiency improvement.' The decision comes just one day after 27 Palestinians were killed near one of the centers in southern Gaza, when the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) opened fire as crowds gathered to receive food. The IOF, which confirmed the closures, issued a warning to residents to avoid roads leading to the GHF sites, declaring them 'combat zones.' No further information was given on the duration or specifics of the so-called renovations. The shooting incident has drawn international condemnation, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres calling the deaths of civilians seeking food 'unacceptable.' The IOF has denied deliberately targeting civilians, claiming troops opened fire on individuals who were 'approaching in a way that endangered' soldiers. IOF spokesperson Effie Defrin confirmed an investigation is underway. The GHF, which began operations just last week with US backing and private funding sources, has also denied responsibility. The organization employs US-contracted security forces and has faced criticism for operating without cooperation from the UN or major humanitarian agencies, who have raised concerns about the group's ties to IOF interests. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk labeled attacks on civilians as 'unconscionable,' warning they may constitute 'a grave breach of international law and a war crime.' The International Committee of the Red Cross echoed those concerns, stating that Gazans are experiencing an 'unprecedented scale and frequency' of mass casualty events. As the situation worsens, the UN Security Council is set to vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. However, the measure is expected to be blocked by the US.

Mexico criticizes US threat to restrict livestock imports

MEXICO CITY: Mexico on Monday criticized a threat by US President Donald Trump's administration to restrict livestock imports over a pest control row, fanning tensions between the major trade partners. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Trump's Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins warned in a letter released Saturday that Washington would restrict imports of live cattle unless Mexico acts to help control a screwworm fly outbreak by Wednesday. She said that Washington was "very concerned" about the countries' joint campaign against the outbreak in southern Mexico. The United States complained that its southern neighbor was restricting US-contracted planes that release sterile screwworm flies to operating six days a week instead of seven. It also accused Mexican authorities of imposing "substantial import duties" on aviation parts, equipment and sterile fly shipments needed for the operations. Asked about the US complaint at her morning news conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that while some aspects were justified, "others we consider to be excessive." She said that the Mexican agriculture ministry was in contact with US authorities to explain its efforts to combat the screwworm, whose flesh-eating larvae can kill cattle. The row comes against a backdrop of increased trade tensions between the neighboring countries as a result of US tariffs. While Trump this month left Mexico off the list of nations facing his "reciprocal tariffs," its carmakers as well as steel and aluminum exporters still face damaging duties. Mexico exported just over one million head of cattle to the United States last year, according to estimates by both governments.

US plane with 10 aboard goes missing in Alaska, search on

Washington DC: US officials on Friday said a search is underway in rural Alaska after a plane carrying 10 people, including the pilot did not arrive in Nome at the scheduled time, as per local media. The Bering Air Caravan flight, from Unalakleet to Nome, was reported overdue to Alaska State Troopers at 4 pm local time, as per Alaska Department of Public Safety as cited by NBC News. The Coast Guard has been notified, and there is also an active ground search, the Nome Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement on social media. The official Coast Guard account on X for the Alaska maritime area said that that the plane was 12 miles offshore going from Unalakleet to Nome when its position was lost. "The US Coast Guard District 17 responded to an aircraft emergency notification from Alaska Rescue Coordination Center at 4:30 p.m. today for a Cessna Caravan that reported to have 10 people aboard," the USCGAlaska said. Meanwhile, CNN had reported that a US-contracted surveillance plane crashed in the Philippines on Thursday morning, killing all four personnel on board, including one US military service member, according to US Indo-Pacific Command. Also on January 29, an American Airlines flight from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Sixty-four people, including four crew, aboard a commercial airliner of American Airlines died in the mid air crash.
