Movie footage falsely shared as Israeli spy execution in Iran
"Iran has hanged Mossad agents," reads a Urdu-language post shared June 30, 2025 on X, referring to Israel's intelligence agency. A video included in the post shows a blindfolded man with his hands tied and a noose around his neck attached to a crane. Two masked men remove the stool under him. "But in Pakistan, Indian terrorist commander Kulbhushan Jadhav is alive and well," the post adds, mentioning an alleged Indian spy who has been on death row for years (archived link). Image Screenshot of the false X post taken June 30, 2025 with a red X added by AFP Similar posts also surfaced on TikTok after a US-proposed ceasefire ended the Iran-Israel war, which killed more than 1,000 people in Iran and at least 28 people in Israel. Hostilities erupted after Israel launched an unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran on June 13, targeting nuclear sites and killing several senior military officials and nuclear scientists (archived link). Tehran responded with waves of drone and missile fire, and the demonstration of Israel's deep intelligence penetration prompted a major hunt for spies (archived link). According to Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights, six men have been hanged on charges of spying for Israel since the start of the conflict, dozens more on other charges and more than 1,000 arrested during or after the conflict on charges related to the war. A reverse image search of keyframes on Google led to longer footage published on YouTube on April 16, 2024 with the title, "Hanging the actor backstage" (archived link). A part of the clip at the end that had been omitted in the circulating video shows people rushing in to help the actor after the scene. Another version of the clip was shared on Instagram on January 3, 2025 with the caption, "Behind the scenes of the execution of the Bi Badan film" (archived link). Image Screenshot comparison of clip in the false posts (L) and the YouTube video The entertainment database IMDB says the Farsi-language film -- released in 2024 -- is an adaptation of a famous criminal case in the 1990s "which went back and forth several times until the execution stage" (archived link). The execution scene can be seen from a different angle between the movie's four to five-minute marks, an AFP journalist found. Misleadingly edited Netanyahu interview omits warning of 'Taliban takeover of Pakistan'
"After Iran is Pakistan, Netanyahu's threat," reads the Urdu-language caption of a video shared on Facebook on June 14, 2025. The clip, shared a day after Israel launched a bombing campaign in Iran that killed top military commanders and scientists linked to its nuclear programme, shows Netanyahu being interviewed. "I said that the greatest mission that we have is to prevent a militant Islamic regime from meeting up with nuclear weapons or from nuclear weapons meeting up with a militant Islamic regime," Netanyahu says in the clip. He then appears to add: "The first is called Iran. The second is called Pakistan. Because if these radical regimes have nuclear weapons, they will not obey the rules that have been obeyed in the last almost seven decades." Israel said the aim of its bombing campaign in Iran was to keep the Islamic republic from developing an atomic weapon -- an ambition Tehran has consistently denied (archived link). Iran responded with ballistic missile attacks on Israeli cities. Pakistan, which is the only Islamic country with nuclear weapons, "strongly condemned" the Israeli strikes on its neighbour Iran (archived link). Iran and Israel traded fire for 12 days before a US-proposed ceasefire brought the conflict to an end. Tehran says the Israeli campaign killed 1,060 people, while Israeli officials said the retaliatory Iranian drone and missile barrages killed at least 28 people. Image Screenshot of the false Facebook post captured on July 8, 2025, with a red X added by AFP The same clip was also shared elsewhere on Facebook. "Inshallah (God willing) Pakistan will be the cause of Israel's destruction Inshallah," read a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "Allah will protect Pakistan and Iran." The circulating clip, however, has been misleadingly edited. Interview from 2011 A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the falsely shared clip led to the full interview, which was posted on the YouTube channel of Israeli broadcaster Channel 2 on March 31, 2011 (archived link). The video is titled, "A World View Interview with Benjamin Netanyahu". "Channel 2 and YouTube bring you a special interview with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, in which citizens ask questions about the peace process, unrest in the Middle East, and more," reads its description. Image Screenshot comparison of the falsely shared video (left) and the interview posted on YouTube in March 2011 (right) The falsely shared clip has been lifted from its 25:40 mark, after Netanyahu is asked: "What is the biggest problem facing the next generation and what should we do to solve it today?" (archived link). His response was misleadingly edited to omit a clarification he makes after mentioning Pakistan. "The first is called Iran, the second is called Pakistan, or more specifically a Taliban takeover of Pakistan," he says. His full remarks are also reflected in a transcript of the interview available on the official Israel Prime Minister's Office website (archived link). There have been no official reports of Netanyahu issuing any warning or threat against Pakistan since the start of the conflict with Iran. Israel ready to negotiate permanent Gaza ceasefire during 60-day truce, Netanyahu says
File: Death and destruction in Gaza. Israel's war on Gaza has killed a total of 57,762 Palestinians and injured 137,656 since October 7, 2023, Israel is willing to negotiate a permanent ceasefire from the start of a US-proposed 60-day truce, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday. But Israel's 'fundamental conditions' were that Hamas 'lays down its weapons' and gives up its 'governing or military capabilities', Netanyahu insisted. On the other hand Hamas appears to be in no hurry to secure a deal that doesn't include complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that Israel was ready to negotiate a permanent ceasefire in Gaza during a 60-day truce but only if the Palestinian territory was demilitarized. Delegations from Israel and Hamas began indirect talks in Doha on Sunday to try to agree a temporary halt in the war, which was sparked by the militant group's October 2023 attack. US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has proposed a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of half of the 20 living hostages still in Gaza, Netanyahu said on Wednesday. 'At the beginning of this ceasefire, we will enter negotiations for a permanent end to the war,' he said in a video message from Washington on Thursday. He said Israel's 'fundamental conditions' were that 'Hamas lays down its weapons' and no longer has 'governing or military capabilities'. 'If this can be achieved through negotiations, great. If it cannot be achieved through negotiations within 60 days, we will achieve it through other means, by using force, the force of our heroic army,' he said. Hamas said on Wednesday it had agreed to release 10 living hostages but on Thursday it said it opposed a deal that includes a large Israeli military presence in Gaza. It also wants the free flow of aid into the territory to ease a humanitarian crisis, and 'real guarantees' for a lasting peace. The Israeli premier called Hamas 'a ruthless terror organisation' and said he wanted the release of all those being held. But he added: 'We will do everything in order to maximise (the number of those released) in this round, in the best way possible. Not everything is in our hands.' (FRANCE 24 with AFP)
